Book excerpt: "Gamma-ray beams normally incident upon slab shields of varying compositions are studied using a computer program based upon the Monte Carlo technique. Initial gamma energies of 1, 4, 6, and 8 MeV are considered. The shielding materials used were aluminum, iron, and lead. Both single and double material shields were investigated, at a variety of thicknesses up to a maximum of five mean free paths. Two secondary gamma processes are included in this simulation: annihilation gammas from pair production and bremsstrahlung from the electrons. The primary effort is the calculation of the dose, energy, and number buildup factors for these shields. The results for a single material agree quite well with experimental values, and the double material results agree with previous calculations. Secondary results obtained include the pattern of energy deposition within the shield and the variation in beam energy and radial spectra as it passes through the shield. The most important conclusion resulting from this work is that secondary gammas must be considered to obtain valid results when studying heavy materials at incident gamma energies greater than 1 MeV"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: An extensive program of calculations was performed to check certain fast-neutron dose-rate measurements made at Project BREN in 1962. The response characteristic of the modified long counter was computed. Nitrogen and oxygen cross sections were reviewed and used in calculations of the transport in air of neutrons from a Godiva source to a distance of 66 g/sq cm. Transport results obtained by Monte Carlo were compared with those obtained by the moments method. A spectrum at an 80-g/sq cm penetration was determined. The perturbating effect of a structure on the neutron field in its neighborhood was estimated. The effect of variations of the spectrum with penetration distances on doses computed with different weight functions was also examined; the Snyder-Neufeld multicollision physical dose was found to vary with distance in a way markedly different from others examined. Work was also done on importance sampling techniques, especially the exponential transform, and the sampling problem was formulated in a simplified, approximate expression to facilitate statistical interpretations. Finally, a number of shield penetration calculations were performed to compare with the measurements and to determine the effects of shield shape, shield cavity size, and source angular distributions incident on the shields. The agreement between the calculations and the measurements was within the uncertainty in the detector response characteristic. (Author).

Book excerpt: Measurements of the fast neutron angular flux spectrum in CH2 have been made in point-source, cylindrical geometry, using the same time-of-flight method previously applied to spherical and infinite medium geometries. This work is a continuation of the comparison of accurate, detailed, high-resolution measurements with DTF-IV discrete-ordinate and O5R Monte Carlo calculations. The sphere experiment was reanalyzed with a P16 Gauss-Legendre quadrature set in DTF-IV using the best available evaluated cross sections and P3 scattering. Reasonably good agreement was found except near 0 deg. where the discrete-ordinate code fails to calculate the very anisotropic flux. 05R calculations were made with a more complete description of the spectrum and angular distribution of the source neutrons, and included the continuum inelastic scattering, using new source generator and general inelastic scattering subroutines written for this research. Differences were small. An angular flux cylinder analysis program was written for 05R and unbiased calculations were made for the cylinder. Variance-reduction schemes are needed, however, for a meaningful comparison with the cylinder measurements. The DTF-IV code (1DF version) was put into operation on the Kirtland CDC6600 computer and the report includes input instructions. (Author).
