Download or read book Movie Monsters Magazine Public Domain Treasury written by Gwandanaland Comics and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the once-dominant and still-popular world of monster magazines, one name ruled for a long time..... but trademark rights prevent me from telling you that name. Still, you know - right? This volume contains first four issues of that famous magazine, and celebrate everything MONSTER. From the classics of Lon Chaney, Jr., Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff and others, to the "modern" late 50s starts such as Vincent Price, this is a treasure-trove of the best of the worst that movies had to offer during its heyday. Originally published in 1958 as a one-shot, before long James Warren and Forrest J. Ackerman had a hit on their hands. Now hundreds of issues have been published, although it is now (sadly) more an online endeavor. Fortunate for the print-magazine fan, the first 21 issues of this magazine did not have the copyright renewed and therefore fell into the public domain - - and so Gwandanaland Comics is proud (and legally able) to bring you those issues! ISSUES #1-8 GWANDANALAND COMICS(TM): We specialize in character collections - many for the first time in print; we also publish individual issues from the past as well as complete comic title series'. Our books are not digitally remastered; we use images from actual comics, and make only minor adjustments to bring out their best characteristics without losing the authentic feel - it is rarely perfect, but we believe it is exciting. We take your requests and create special collections never gathered together before! At Gwandanaland Comics we take the extra time to give you the best quality possible! GWANDANALAND COMICS(TM) wishes everyone to know the value of, and debt owed to two Websites which have made sure that public domain and other comics are available to the world. Please visit these sites and enjoy viewing their comic files. Book Synopsis UNDERWORLDS MAGAZINE NO 1 by : Thomas Deja
Download or read book UNDERWORLDS MAGAZINE NO 1 written by Thomas Deja and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UNDERWORLDS is a tri-annual paperback magazine that seeks to create a bridge between crime fiction (especially, but not neccesarily exclusively, of the noir school) and horror fiction. Because of its general air of emotional and psychological darkness, as well as its frequent themes of hopelessness, betrayal and passions gone wrong, the crime fiction of such writers as Jim Thompson, Cornell Woolrich and David Goodis shares a lot of resonance with horror fiction (some of the above referenced writers have produced what could arguably called horror fiction in the past, like Thompson's ending to THE GETAWAY and his novel THE KILLER INSIDE ME). UNDERWORLDS (a double edged title, as it has different-yet-similar meanings in both crime and horror fiction) seeks to allow writers the opportunity to explore the nexus between these two genres, and gives readers of both genres a glimpse into the world of the other.
Book Synopsis American Public Policy: Promise and Performance, 9th Edition by : B. Guy Peters
Download or read book American Public Policy: Promise and Performance, 9th Edition written by B. Guy Peters and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voting and elections may often be cited as the most entertaining aspect of political theatre, however, it is the arena of public policy that has the most direct impact on the lives of the citizenry. And as we have seen played out in recent debates over healthcare reform, policy changes can be dramatic, sweeping, and often hotly contested. Known for providing a trusted and comprehensive overview of the policy process, B. Guy Peters returns with the ninth edition of American Public Policy: Promise and Performance. Beyond walking students through the governmental structures and policy-making procedures, Peters efficiently covers a wide swath of policy areas, and then concludes with a look at both cost-benefit analysis and ethical analysis. Framed in context of the aftermath of the financial crisis and Great Recession, the ninth edition considers how policy has been impacted by persistent unemployment and growing income inequality. In addition, Peters discusses the strain on education budgets, increased oversight of financial activities, fiscal policies meant to stimulate the economy, and the political challenge of balancing the budget in light of increased public spending.
Book Synopsis The Dinosaur Filmography by : Mark F. Berry
Download or read book The Dinosaur Filmography written by Mark F. Berry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From classics like King Kong, to beloved B–movies like The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, to blockbusters like Jurassic Park, it’s easy to see that filmmakers and audiences alike love to see dinosaurs on the screen. This comprehensive filmography, arranged alphabetically by title, contains entries that include basic facts (year of release, country of origin, studio, and running time), followed by a concise plot summary, the author’s critical commentary, information on the production and the people behind it, and secrets of the often-ingenious special effects. Three useful appendices feature films with minor dinosaur content, planned but unfinished dinosaur movies, and the quasi-dinosaurs of Toho Studios. To be included, a movie must depict one or more representations of a “prehistoric reptile.” Inaccurate portrayals are included, as long as the intent is to represent a real or fictional dinosaur. Not eligible are films featuring prehistoric mammals, prehistoric humans or humanoids, and beasts of mythology—unless, of course, the movie also has a dinosaur.
Book Synopsis Monsters to Destroy by : Navin A. Bapat
Download or read book Monsters to Destroy written by Navin A. Bapat and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism kills far fewer Americans annually than automobile accidents, firearms, or even lightning strikes. Given this minimal risk, why does the U.S. continue expending lives and treasure to fight the global war on terror? In Monsters to Destroy, Navin A. Bapat argues that the war on terror provides the U.S. a cover for its efforts to expand and preserve American control over global energy markets. To gain dominance over these markets, the U.S. offered protection to states critical in the extraction, sale, and transportation of energy from their "terrorist" internal and external enemies. However, since the U.S. was willing to protect these states in perpetuity, the leaders of these regimes had no incentive to disarm their terrorists. This inaction allowed terrorists to transition into more powerful and virulent insurgencies, leading the protected states to chart their own courses and ultimately break with U.S. foreign policy objectives. Bapat provides a sweeping look at how the loss of influence over these states has accelerated the decline of U.S. economic and military power, locking it into a permanent war for its own economic security.

Book Synopsis The Forrest J Ackerman Oeuvre by : Christopher M. O’Brien
Download or read book The Forrest J Ackerman Oeuvre written by Christopher M. O’Brien and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although he is most remembered for his vast collection of science fiction memorabilia; his influential magazine, Famous Monsters of Filmland; and his frequent sci-fi convention appearances, Forrest J Ackerman (1916-2008) also left a sizeable body of work in print. An introductory biographical section traces Ackerman's early enthusiasm for pulp magazines and film productions of a fantastic nature, his rise to prominence in "fandom," his acquisition of memorabilia, his work as a literary agent, the founding of his landmark magazine in 1958, and his friendship with a number of performers and personnel from genre films. The extensive bibliography includes listings of books, published letters, articles, fiction, verse, speeches, screenplays, comics, discography, liner notes, and periodicals edited and published by Ackerman. A thorough filmography, a selected listing of nationally televised appearances, and rare photographs of Ackerman throughout his lifetime complete this definitive catalog of one of science fiction's most interesting personalities.
Download or read book Being Dragonborn written by Mike Piero and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the bestselling and most influential video games of the past decade. From the return of world-threatening dragons to an ongoing civil war, the province of Skyrim is rich with adventure, lore, magic, history, and stunning vistas. Beyond its visual spectacle alone, Skyrim is an exemplary gameworld that reproduces out-of-game realities, controversies, and histories for its players. Being Dragonborn, then, comes to signify a host of ethical and ideological choices for the player, both inside and outside the gameworld. These essays show how playing Skyrim, in many ways, is akin to "playing" 21st century America with its various crises, conflicts, divisions, and inequalities. Topics covered include racial inequality and white supremacy, gender construction and misogyny, the politics of modding, rhetorics of gameplay, and narrative features.
Book Synopsis Yesterday's Monsters by : Hadar Aviram
Download or read book Yesterday's Monsters written by Hadar Aviram and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, the world was shocked by a series of murders committed by Charles Manson and his “family” of followers. Although the defendants were sentenced to death in 1971, their sentences were commuted to life with parole in 1972; since 1978, they have been regularly attending parole hearings. Today all of the living defendants remain behind bars. Relying on nearly fifty years of parole hearing transcripts, as well as interviews and archival materials, Hadar Aviram invites readers into the opaque world of the California parole process—a realm of almost unfettered administrative discretion, prison programming inadequacies, high-pitched emotions, and political pressures. Yesterday’s Monsters offers a fresh longitudinal perspective on extreme punishment.

Download or read book Men Is Cheap written by Brian P. Luskey and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a Civil War substitute broker told business associates that "Men is cheep here to Day," he exposed an unsettling contradiction at the heart of the Union's war effort. Despite Northerners' devotion to the principles of free labor, the war produced rampant speculation and coercive labor arrangements that many Americans labeled fraudulent. Debates about this contradiction focused on employment agencies called "intelligence offices," institutions of dubious character that nevertheless served the military and domestic necessities of the Union army and Northern households. Northerners condemned labor agents for pocketing fees above and beyond contracts for wages between employers and employees. Yet the transactions these middlemen brokered with vulnerable Irish immigrants, Union soldiers and veterans, former slaves, and Confederate deserters defined the limits of independence in the wage labor economy and clarified who could prosper in it. Men Is Cheap shows that in the process of winning the war, Northerners were forced to grapple with the frauds of free labor. Labor brokers, by helping to staff the Union military and Yankee households, did indispensable work that helped the Northern state and Northern employers emerge victorious. They also gave rise to an economic and political system that enriched the managerial class at the expense of laborers--a reality that resonates to this day.
