Book excerpt: "Monsoon Tango: A Love Beyond Boundaries" is an enchanting and uplifting novel that takes readers on a remarkable journey of friendship and love, spanning continents and navigating through life's highs and lows. It artfully weaves together a tapestry of real-life incidents that add depth and authenticity to the narrative. At its heart, the story revolves around the profound bond between two men: Abhi Kumar, a student from India, and Robi Bascom, an African American student. Their paths converge at a prestigious university in the United States, bringing together their distinct backgrounds and cultures. Their friendship becomes an unbreakable thread that defies geographical boundaries and sets the stage for a series of extraordinary adventures, including their foray into a start-up in India. Amidst their enthralling journey, a captivating love story unfolds between Abhi's beautiful cousin sister, Gayatri, and the charismatic Robi, within the confines of a culturally conservative setting. The resistance they face from Gayatri's parents adds a compelling layer of tension, leading to heartbreak and strained friendships. However, fate takes an unexpected turn, and their relationship is ultimately consummated in a sensational manner, transcending continents once again. What sets this story apart is the immersive experience it offers. The author, inspired to capture the true essence of the ambiance and cultural nuances, wrote the story while physically present in all the important locations. This approach infuses the narrative with an authentic and palpable sense of place, enriching the reading experience for audiences. The book seamlessly blends heartfelt emotions, thought-provoking themes, and moments of sheer delight, making it a truly compelling read from start to finish.

Book excerpt: ‘To say that, in fact, writing has been no more than a way of talking about the body and nothing but the body...’ Lost to the meaning of her life, a foreign writer arrives in Delhi seeking the wordless company of strangers. Delhi is an exploded sun, bleeding everywhere its untrammelled chaos: the feral dampness of bus fumes; the suicidal rush of scooters; the autorickshaw seats impregnated with thousands of odours—nauseous accretions of India’s muddy human tide. The men with their stinking bidis rule as masters and the women remain walled in by centuries of tradition. The author, infatuated by a quiet lady on the street, begins to seek the untamed and undiscovered country that lies below her sari, the delicate throbbing hidden beneath her silence. As she rediscovers her voice and the ability to write a story, and as monsoon arrives, low and heavy-bellied, washing away the concrete barricades of custom, a secret encounter in a music store opens up an ancient darwaza of forbidden pleasures. Bursting with sharp irreverence, Indian Tango is a story of fleshly transgression and unlikely liberation in the patriachopolis of New Delhi.

Book excerpt: An edited volume by Monsoon Assemblages, a European Research Council funded research project. The book presents the methods that Monsoon Assemblages has evolved for engaging the monsoon, a globally connected weather system, as a coproducer of urban life and space in South and Southeast Asian cities. It challenges views of climate as an inert backdrop to urban life, instead suggesting that it is materially and spatially active in shaping urban politics, ecologies, infrastructures, buildings and bodies. It combines critical texts with cartography, photography and ethnography to present the project’s methodology and its outcomes and invites urban practitioners to think differently about space, time, representation and human and non-human agency. It offers intra-disciplinary, intra-active methods for rethinking human and non-human relations with weather in ways that meet the challenges of climate change and the Anthropocene.

Book Synopsis Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons by : Haruo Shirane
Download or read book Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons written by Haruo Shirane and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Elegant representations of nature and the four seasons populate a wide range of Japanese genres and media. In Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons, Haruo Shirane shows how, when, and why this practice developed and explicates the richly encoded social, religious, and political meanings of this imagery. Shirane discusses textual, cultivated, material, performative, and gastronomic representations of nature. He reveals how this kind of 'secondary nature, ' which flourished in Japan's urban environment, fostered and idealized a sense of harmony with the natural world just at the moment when it began to recede from view. Illuminating the deeper meaning behind Japanese aesthetics and artifacts, Shirane also clarifies the use of natural and seasonal topics as well as the changes in their cultural associations and functions across history, genre, and community over more than a millennium. In this book, the four seasons are revealed to be as much a cultural construction as a reflection of the physical world."--Back cover.

Book Synopsis War in the Shallows by : John Darrell Sherwood
Download or read book War in the Shallows written by John Darrell Sherwood and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2015 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War in the Shallows, published in 2015 by the Naval History and Heritage Command, is the authoritative account of the U.S. Navy's hard-fought battle along Vietnam's rivers and coastline from 1965-1968. At the height of the U.S. Navy's involvement in the Vietnam War, the Navy's coastal and riverine forces included more than 30,000 Sailors and over 350 patrol vessels ranging in size from riverboats to destroyers. These forces developed the most extensive maritime blockade in modern naval history and fought pitched battles against Viet Cong units in the Mekong Delta and elsewhere. War in the Shallows explores the operations of the Navy's three inshore task forces from 1965 to 1968. It also delves into other themes such as basing, technology, tactics, and command and control. Finally, using oral history interviews, it reconstructs deckplate life in South Vietnam, focusing in particular on combat waged by ordinary Sailors. Vietnam was the bloodiest war in recent naval history and War in the Shallows strives above all else to provide insight into the men who fought it and honor their service and sacrifice. Illustrated throughout with photographs and maps. Author John Darrell Sherwood has served as a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) since 1997. -- Provided by publisher.
