The importance of a close collaboration between cytologists and ophthalmologists in the field of ophthalmic tumors is emphasized. The monograph presents high-quality illustrations accompanied by very informative legends that reveal the details of the clinical-cytological correlation evident in many of the cases managed by the authors. It presents a complete spectrum of ophthalmic tumors covering uveal melanoma, uveal metastasis, intraocular lymphoma, and orbital tumors. Recent innovations in the instrumentation and use of digital cytology in fine needle aspiration biopsy are also reviewed. This publication is an excellent reference text on rare tumors. It is highly recommended reading for ophthalmic pathologists, cytologists, and oncologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cytopathology is a field characterized by practicality and diagnostic efficacy. This book focuses mainly on morphology, with helpful hints for recognizing benign lesions and the main features of malignancy. It reviews specific features of various lesions and the consequences of the diagnosis for the management of the patient. Each chapter contains high-quality cytology images accompanying the descriptions, including comparison images to distinguish the most important morphological features and to help in the differential diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) sampling and preparation technique, fixation, staining, and principles of its interpretation are covered. Immunocytochemistry and ancillary techniques are outlined, as well as the main clinical and radiological features of breast lesions, and the cytological diagnostics of axillary lymph nodes. This publication will be of great use to medical practitioners in their first approach to breast cytopathology, as well as to pathologists and cytotechnicians with little to moderate experience in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the era of precision medicine, physicians are increasingly in need of more definitive diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive information derived from small biopsy specimens such as cytology samples in order to guide effective patient care. Cytopathology is well poised to meet this challenge. Whilst the traditional cytomorphologic component of cytology practice is still valid, enormous advances have been made in the field of cytopathology thanks to transformative technology and innovative individuals that have augmented the cytologists' ability to meet the demands of modern medicine. The purpose of this book is to describe, illustrate, and review many of the most recent developments regarding modern techniques employed in cytopathology. This latest monograph is intended for all cytologists including cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, cytology lab assistants, trainees, research scientists, and anyone who is interested in the field of cytopathology. We have invited pioneering experts in their respective fields to author these chapters. This book is not only the culmination of their groundbreaking work and effort but also presents a critical review of the current literature. We have attempted to provide readers with an informative and comprehensive aid so that they may better appreciate how emerging technology has been applied to cytology. Each chapter in this book presents a stand-alone contemporary review of emerging topics in cytopathology. We hope that you will find this monograph thought-provoking and a valuable reference for your practice.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive color manual Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) became important for the cytology of the enlarged lymph node in the 1950s and 1960s and was accepted in the diagnosis of various types of lymphadenitis and metastatic disease. The diagnosis of lymphoma by FNA cytology, however, remained controversial for many years, as FNA smears did not allow the evaluation of growth pattern. Only later with the introduction of immunocytochemistry on FNA material it became possible to conclusively diagnose the majority of lymphomas with an accuracy comparable to that of histopathology. Other ancillary techniques such as FISH and PCR can now also be applied successfully to FNA material. These facts together with the excellent clinical performance of FNA sampling should increase the spread of the technique. This comprehensive manual presents the cytomorphologic and immunocytochemical characteristics of both non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas. It discusses the technical, methodological aspects of lymphoma diagnosis and describes the cytologic features of reactive lymphoid lesions and the major types of neoplastic lymphoid lesions, based on the most recent (2001) WHO lymphoma classification. Key cytologic and immunologic features are listed to facilitate a conclusive diagnosis of the different lesions. This publication will be of immense value to clinicians such as cytopathologists, pathologists, oncologists, and hematologists involved in the clinical work-up and management of patients with lymph node lesions.

This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, the primary diagnosis of soft tissue tumours has emerged as an important new target for fine needle aspiration (FNA). The purpose of this book is to facilitate the cytological evaluation of FNA smears from soft tissue tumours and to suggest cytological criteria for histotype diagnoses. Its primary aim is to describe and illustrate not only the most common types but also those rare tumours where cytological features have been largely described in case reports and in small series. The diagnostic use of ancillary methods is discussed and illustrated, and, in order to facilitate the diagnostic work-up in FNA samples, smears are also classified according to their principal microscopic patterns. The selection of entities presented, their diagnostic features and differential diagnostic considerations are mainly based on the experience with FNA in the primary diagnosis of soft tissue tumours in patients referred to the Musculoskeletal Tumour Centre at the University Hospital in Lund, Sweden over the last 30 years. The illustrations have mainly been culled from cases in the files of the Department of Pathology and Cytology, Lund University Hospital. Soft tissue tumours are relatively rare and often difficult to correctly diagnose in fine needle aspirates. Therefore, this publication should be welcomed by all cytopathologists involved in the FNA diagnosis of tumours as a valuable addition to their benchside textbooks.

Book excerpt: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been commonly used to follow up on previously treated sarcomas or to confirm soft tissue and bone metastases of carcinomas, melanomas or lymphomas. Its role as the first-line approach in the diagnosis of primary soft tissue and bone tumors has increased due to progress of less invasive diagnostic procedures and the growing availability of diagnostic ancillary tests. This comprehensive and richly-illustrated volume presents cytomorphology of all common neoplastic soft tissue and bone lesions but also of rare tumors largely described in case reports. Key points for cytological features, differential diagnosis, and the use of ancillary tests are discussed and illustrated in order to facilitate the diagnostic work-up in FNA samples. The volume is organized on the basis of the most recent WHO classification used in surgical pathology in order to provide a practical guide for modern cytologic diagnosis of surgical soft tissue and bone pathology. It is aimed mainly at surgical pathologists and cytopathologists, but also at orthopedic surgeons and clinical oncologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated monograph presents a comprehensive description of Fine-Needle Cytology (FNC), including technical procedures and ancillary techniques, applied to the lymph node (LN). Possibilities and limitations are highlighted to produce accurate cytological diagnosis of LN and cytological criteria, and to be exploited for extra-nodal lymphoproliferative processes. The normal LN structure and corresponding cytological patterns are described. Cytological, phenotypical, and molecular features are reviewed along with diagnostic criteria for various medical conditions such as lymphadenitis and lymphadenopathies, Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, pediatric lymphoadenopaties, immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders, extra-nodal lymphoproliferative processes, metastases, and other non-lymphomatous processes. LN-FNC requires knowledge of hemathopathology and imaging techniques, as well as dexterity with FNC performing, smearing, and material management. Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), the choice of ancillary techniques and molecular procedures case by case are required to produce accurate and comprehensive diagnosis. This book will help cytopathologists to conduct these tasks in various organs and clinical contexts.
