Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated monograph presents a comprehensive description of Fine-Needle Cytology (FNC), including technical procedures and ancillary techniques, applied to the lymph node (LN). Possibilities and limitations are highlighted to produce accurate cytological diagnosis of LN and cytological criteria, and to be exploited for extra-nodal lymphoproliferative processes. The normal LN structure and corresponding cytological patterns are described. Cytological, phenotypical, and molecular features are reviewed along with diagnostic criteria for various medical conditions such as lymphadenitis and lymphadenopathies, Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, pediatric lymphoadenopaties, immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders, extra-nodal lymphoproliferative processes, metastases, and other non-lymphomatous processes. LN-FNC requires knowledge of hemathopathology and imaging techniques, as well as dexterity with FNC performing, smearing, and material management. Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), the choice of ancillary techniques and molecular procedures case by case are required to produce accurate and comprehensive diagnosis. This book will help cytopathologists to conduct these tasks in various organs and clinical contexts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the Essentials in Cytopathology book series will focus on the cytopathology of lymph nodes. It will address the topic of fine needle aspiration of lymph nodes and fulfill the need for an easy-to-use and authoritative synopsis of lymph node cytopathology. The book with adopt an algorithmic diagnostic approach, starting from the cytomorphologic pattern of the lymph node aspirate. The focus will be on the appropriate and effective use of ancillary studies (immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, fluorescence in situ hybridization and molecular techniques) and integration of their results into the final diagnosis. The book will present the cytopathologic features and differential diagnoses for the major cytologic patterns in lymph node fine needle aspiration. The entities typically falling within each of these patterns will be discussed with illustration of the spectrum of cytologic features, differential diagnoses and pitfalls. The book will cover the full spectrum of benign and malignant primary conditions of the lymph nodes, with emphasis on common disorders. Discussion of metastatic conditions will be restricted to those that are relevant to the differential diagnosis of primary lymphoid disorders. This book is designed as an easy to use resource that fits into the lab coat pocket, ideal for portability and quick reference. It is heavily illustrated and contains useful algorithms that guide the reader through the differential diagnosis of common and uncommon entities encountered in lymph node aspirates. The accompanying text follows an easy to use pattern-based outline. A useful resource for every pathologist, cytopathologist, fellow and trainee.

Book excerpt: Lymph node (LN) fine-needle cytology (FNC) coupled with flow cytometry immunophenotyping provides important information for diagnosing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This special topic issue offers comprehensive reviews that describe the state of the art of LN FNC-FC and all its possible applications. FNC and FC are two independent procedures that can conveniently meet and merge in specific conditions and for specific purposes. FNC samples are, for example, suitable for various molecular procedures. The issue includes a brief description of available tools and their potential application to LN FNC. FNC may be useful for diagnosing lymphoma and determining prognosis. As such, this publication is highly recommended to cytopathologists, pathologists, and hematologists.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive color manual Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) became important for the cytology of the enlarged lymph node in the 1950s and 1960s and was accepted in the diagnosis of various types of lymphadenitis and metastatic disease. The diagnosis of lymphoma by FNA cytology, however, remained controversial for many years, as FNA smears did not allow the evaluation of growth pattern. Only later with the introduction of immunocytochemistry on FNA material it became possible to conclusively diagnose the majority of lymphomas with an accuracy comparable to that of histopathology. Other ancillary techniques such as FISH and PCR can now also be applied successfully to FNA material. These facts together with the excellent clinical performance of FNA sampling should increase the spread of the technique. This comprehensive manual presents the cytomorphologic and immunocytochemical characteristics of both non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas. It discusses the technical, methodological aspects of lymphoma diagnosis and describes the cytologic features of reactive lymphoid lesions and the major types of neoplastic lymphoid lesions, based on the most recent (2001) WHO lymphoma classification. Key cytologic and immunologic features are listed to facilitate a conclusive diagnosis of the different lesions. This publication will be of immense value to clinicians such as cytopathologists, pathologists, oncologists, and hematologists involved in the clinical work-up and management of patients with lymph node lesions.

Book excerpt: The Frozen Section Library series provides concise, user-friendly, site specific handbooks that are well illustrated and highlight the pitfalls, artifacts and differential diagnosis issues that arise in the hurried frozen section scenario. Frozen Section Library: Lymph Nodes highlights the usefulness of techniques such as touch preparation cytology and fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology, as well as FNA biopsy. This fascicle also suggests proper handling for subsequent ancillary studies, including flow cytometric, cytogenetic, and molecular studies. Special emphasis is given to the limitations of frozen section diagnosis in lymph node pathology. All chapters are written by experts in their fields and include the most up to date scientific information. This book serves as a very useful resource for physicians in the frozen section room and in intra-operative consultation situations dealing with, and interested in, this very complex field of diagnostic pathology. Frozen Section Library: Lymph Nodes is of great value to pathologists, residents, and fellows who diagnose pathologic processes involving lymph nodes. Cherie H. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a pattern approach to diagnosis is taught and practiced with almost every other tissue or organ in the body, the lymph node remains a mystery to most residents starting out in pathology and those pathologists with limited experience in the area. A Pattern Approach to Lymph Node Diagnosis demonstrates that a systematic approach to lymph node examination can be achieved through recognition of morphological patterns produced by different disease processes. It presents a combination of knowledge-based assessment and pattern recognition for diagnosis covering the major primary neoplastic and non neoplastic diseases and metastatic tumors in lymph nodes. This volume demonstrates that lymph node compartments can be recognized histologically especially with the aid of immunohistological markers and how this knowledge can be employed effectively to localize and identify pathological changes in the different compartments in order to facilitate histological diagnosis. It also defines histological features that, because of their pathological occurrence in lymph nodes, are useful pointers to specific diagnoses or disease processes. The volume is organized in accordance with the primary pattern of presentation of each diagnostic entity. Differential diagnosis is discussed and each diagnostic entity is accompanied by color illustrations that highlight the diagnostic features. Immunohistochemistry, clinical aspects, relevant cytogenetics and molecular information of each entity is provided by authors who are experts in lymphoproliferative diseases. An algorithmic approach to diagnosis is adopted at the end of each section by listing a set of questions that help to consider diagnostic entities that can present with the morphological features observed. A Pattern Approach to Lymph Node Diagnosis will be of great utility to residents and fellows in pathology and general pathologists making first hand lymph node diagnoses as well as to hematologists and physicians who treat patients with lymphoprolifeative diseases.
