Book excerpt: Juni Ba’s Djeliya is a stunning graphic novel retelling, recontextualization, and remix of the West African Sundiata epic of Mandé origin. Inspired by West African folklore and stories handed over centuries, this unique graphic novel follows the adventures of Mansour Keita, last prince of a dying kingdom, and Awa Kouyaté, his loyal Djeli, or 'royal storyteller' as they journey to meet the great wizard who destroyed their world and then withdrew into his tower, never to be seen again. On their journey they'll cross paths with friend and foe, from myth and legend alike, and revisit the traditions, tales, and stories that gave birth to their people and nurture them still. But what dark secret lies at the heart of these stories, and what purpose do their tellers truly serve?

Book excerpt: With its 8.3 million occupants, London is a bustling and diverse metropolis characterized by rich histories of socioeconomic change, multiculturalism and diversity. The multiplicity of smells and tastes which can be experienced in the city are integral both to an understanding of its history and the reality of the city's urban present. From the mangos sold by street grocers and links with years of cultural exchange, to the rise of culturally hybridized foodstuffs and dishes such as the chicken katsu wrap, the exploration of sensory experience in the urban context is key to understanding the complex cultural genealogies of the city and its social life. Sociologist Alex Rhys-Taylor charts a groundbreaking new sensory ethnography in an urban multicultural context, exploring the relevance of sociological concepts such as gentrification, multiculturalism, sustainability and globalization whilst each chapter offers micro histories of ingredients and narratives of individuals, providing a vibrant demonstration of the evolution of taste and culture through time and space.

Book excerpt: CONQUER CREATIVE WRITING BOOK 1 aims to provide young children with a systematic and progressive approach to composition writing. There are various types of exercises in this book: Rearrangement of words to form a sentence These exercises will encourage the students to think of the structure of a sentence carefully. Cloze passage, with pictures and helping words The pictures are direct references to the answers. The students will learn to associate a picture with a word to complete a story. This enables them to pick up new words and reinforce those that they have already learnt. Cloze passage, with a single picture and helping words The picture plays an indirect role here as it shows only the general theme of the passage. The students complete the story with the help of the words given. This encourages them to read carefully before choosing their answers. Cloze passage, without pictures but with helping words The students have to read through a passage once to get the general idea of the story. This will help them to choose the most appropriate word to fill in each blank to complete the story. Rearrangement of given sentences with pictures Reading and understanding are the focus of such questions. The students learn to rearrange given sentences to form a story based on the pictures given. Rearrangement of given sentences without pictures The students learn to think about a story in a logical sequence of events. They learn to rearrange the given sentences according to what they think is correct and logical. • Picture comprehension, guided by questions and helping words The exercises aim to teach students to think about a topic, theme or subject before writing. Helping words are given to help them express themselves better. Picture comprehension, without questions but with helping words The exercises encourage free response and writing. Given a theme, the students can write about their own experiences or make up an interesting story. Helping words are given to help them express themselves better. Imaginative writing Given a theme, the students will be asked several questions. They can use their imagination to answer the questions. These exercises enable them to be creative and to express their ideas freely. The various themes used in these exercises present a list of vocabulary that students will find useful when writing compositions on similar themes in school. The reading required to do the exercises in this book will improve the students’ comprehension and writing skills.

This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tropical and sub-tropical Range States, wildmeat is an important source of nutrition and income, but current extraction levels of vulnerable taxa are considered unsustainable. As such, wildmeat use is often seen as problematic for wildlife conservation. From a development perspective, balancing the nutritional needs of people who depend on wildmeat with biodiversity conservation is the greatest challenge. But why can’t wildmeat use be seen as an ally for conservation? Most analysis of wildmeat use have framed the problem around a rather simplistic paradigm where wildmeat use is unsustainable and should therefore be reduced or stopped to ensure wildlife conservation. Indeed, until the early start of this century most research efforts have been rooted in the biological disciplines, focused on quantifying the magnitude of the trade and measuring its level of destruction on wildlife species and ecosystems. This most often led to the institution of prohibitive policies intended for the protection of the wild resources, such as separating people from wildlife, expanding tightly-managed protected area networks, blanket criminalization of wild meat hunting, and increasing enforcement and interdiction measures. More recently, based on the elucidation of the role of wild meat in human livelihoods, some practitioners defend the idea that consumptive uses of wildlife are the only way to save it in the long run.
