Book excerpt: A Ms. Magazine Most Anticipated Book A devastating investigation into the “corporate poverty complex”—the myriad businesses that profit from the poor Poverty is big business in America. The federal government spends about $900 billion a year on programs that directly or disproportionately impact poor Americans, including antipoverty programs such as the earned income tax credit, Medicaid, and affordable housing vouchers and subsidies. States and local governments spend tens of billions more. Ironically, these enormous sums fuel the “corporate poverty complex,” a vast web of hidden industries and entrenched private-sector interests that profit from the bureaucracies regulating the lives of the poor. From bail bondsmen to dialysis providers to towing companies, their business models depend on exploiting low-income Americans, and their political influence ensures a thriving set of industries where everyone profits except the poor, while U.S. taxpayers foot the bill. In Poverty for Profit, veteran journalist Anne Kim investigates the multiple industries that infiltrate almost every aspect of the lives of the poor—health care, housing, criminal justice, and nutrition. She explains how these businesses are aided by public policies such as the wholesale privatization of government services and the political influence these industries wield over lawmakers and regulators. Supported by original investigative reporting on the lesser-known players profiting from the antipoverty industry, Poverty for Profit adds a crucial dimension to our understanding of how structural inequality and structural racism function today.

The practical aspects of day-to-day profit planning are emphasized, which means that the reader can understand the approach with the minimum of theory and technical jargon. The examples and illustrations used can easily be translated into all aspects of the hospitality industry, so this book has a wide appeal. Unit managers now have high levels of finance responsibility at an early stage in their career. This reflects the growth in strongly branded and market oriented chains of pubs and restaurants which need to achieve swift returns on their investments. The financial management skills expected of unit managers are therefore growing in sophistication and this new edition takes full account of this.

Book excerpt: Exceptional sales practices have always consisted of both art and science. Profit Heroes delves deeply into sales science as it has evolved since the Great Recession. It is both eye-opening and amazingly powerful. Dont just read it. Study it! Tom Hopkins, author of When Buyers Say No Warning: Everything you know about selling is wrong. Everything you have been taught before today is wrong. This book will upset you. You will have to relearn everything. You will have to learn about a new mindset: a profit mindset. Todd Schnick, CEO of Dreamland Media The first two chapters are absolutely riveting. You read about a salesperson who lost the sale and was devastated. You read about the salesperson who won the sale. Anyone who has sold has felt both of these emotions. But Bob Rickert makes those emotions palpable. Once he hooks you emotionally, he provides the roadmap for winning more and bigger deals. If you want to be seen as a peera businessperson who happens to sellinstead of just another salesperson, Profit Heroes belongs at the top of your must-read list. Chris Lytle, author of The Accidental Salesperson Now, more than ever, salespeople need to understand finance and profitability if they are to sell effectively to the C-suite. Fortunately, Bob Rickert has written an informative and thoroughly enjoyable book that provides a roadmap for salespeople seeking to become Profit Heroes. Using realistic examples, Bob paints a picture of how to sell successfully using executive board language, and contrasts it with the unsuccessful strategy of a firm that takes a different approach. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the sales arena. Dr. Dawn Deeter-Schmelz, professor; director of the National Strategic Selling Institute; J. J. Vanier Distinguished Chair of Relational Selling & Marketing, Kansas State University

Book excerpt: We consider partnerships among risk-averse professionals endowed with (i) a risky and personally-costly production technology and (ii) a personally-costly monitoring technology providing contractible noisy signals about partners' productive efforts. Partners shirk both production and monitoring tasks because efforts are unobservable. We characterize optimal partnership size, profit shares and incentive payments when every partner performs the same tasks, and show that medium-sized partnerships are dominated by either smaller or larger partnerships. Prohibiting some partners from monitoring increases the incentives for others to monitor. We illustrate how task assignments and incentives interact, leading to improvements in partner welfare.

She compares the rights, incentives, and corresponding decision behaviour in for-profit, nonprofit, and public organizations under conditions of unbounded rationality. She shows that managerial responses to regulation, tax, and industrial organization policies may differ from the usual predictions when property rights are considered. She also shows how property rights link economic and organization theory.

Book excerpt: The peer review of the Action 13 Minimum Standard is proceeding in stages with three annual reviews in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The phased review process follows the phased implementation of CbC Reporting. Each annual peer review process will therefore focus on different aspects of the three key areas under review: the domestic legal and administrative framework, the exchange of information framework, and the confidentiality and appropriate use of CbC reports. This second annual peer review report reflects the outcome of the second review which considered all aspects of implementation. It contains the review of 116 jurisdictions which provided legislation or information pertaining to the implementation of CbC Reporting.
