Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the structural and thermodynamic properties of biologically and technological relevant macromolecules when placed at soft interfaces. In particular two amphiphilic macromolecules characterized by different topologies have been investigated namely amphiphilic dendrimers and linear block copolymers. This goal is achieved using a multiscale approach which includes all-atom, united atom and coarse grained models by means of molecular dynamic simulations. Amphiphilic dendrimers have shown to be promising building blocks for a range of interfacial materials and can be used in applications such as surface-base sensors or surface nanopatterning. In this part of the thesis by means of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the structure and stability of alkyl-modified polyamido-amide (PAMAM) dendrimers at the air/water interface as a function of the number and the relative position of the modified end groups. We found that the PAMAM dendrimer with all terminal groups functionalized is more stable at the interface than the Janus dendrimer, where only half the amine groups are modified. These results indicate that monolayers of fully functionalized molecules could be as stable as (or more stable than) those self-assembled from Janus molecules. The second part of the thesis is devoted to model a particular family of amphiphilic triblock copolymer sold as Pluronics, consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) arranged as PEO-PPO-PEO. There is evidence that this class of amphiphilic materials can be used for different biological applications. A fuller understanding of the molecular mechanisms underpinning their interactions with living cells is essential for ensuring the polymers safety and efficacy in biomedical applications. Using united-atom molecular dynamics simulations and membrane lysis assays, we investigated the relationship between the molecular conformations of a subset of the Pluronic copolymers (L31, L61, L62 and L64) and their haemolytic activity. Our computational studies suggest that the hydrophilic blocks in these copolymers interact with the polar head groups of lipid molecules, resulting in a predicted modification of the structure of the membranes. Parallel membrane lysis assays in human erythrocytes indicate differences in the rates of haemolysis, as a result of incubation with these polymers, which correlate well with the predicted interactions from the atomistic simulations. The computational data thus provide a putative mechanism to rationalize the available experimental data on membrane lysis by these copolymers. The data quantitatively agree with haemoglobin release endpoints measured when copolymers with the same molecular weight and structure as of those modelled are incubated with erythrocytes. The data further suggest some new structure- function relationships at the nanoscale that are likely to be of importance in determining the biological activity of these otherwise inert copolymers. In order to visualise the effect of Pluronics at a length and time scale closer to the experimental one, in the third part of the thesis we developed a coarse-grained model for the amphiphilic copolymers within the framework of the MARTINI forcefield (Marrink et al., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2007, 111, 7812). The MARTINI force field is usually parameterized targeting thermodynamic properties. In addition to this, we further parameterized it based on atomistic simulations validating the parameters against structural properties of the copolymers. The ability of the model to predict several structural and thermodynamic properties of the atomistic system have been explored. The aim of this work is to be able to simulate the polymer/lipid interface at polymer concentration similar to the experimental one.

Book excerpt: During the last decade, various powerful experimental tools have been developed, such as small angle X-ray and neutron scattering, X-ray and neutron reflection from interfaces, neutron spin-echo spectroscopy and quasi-elastic multiple light scattering and large scale computer simulations. Due to the rapid progress brought about by these techniques, one witnesses a resurgence of interest in the physicochemical properties of colloids, surfactants and macromolecules in solution. Although these disciplines have a long history, they are at present rapidly transforming into a new, interdisciplinary research area generally known as complex liquids or soft condensed matter physics: names that reflect the considerable involvement of the chemical and condensed matter physicists. This book is based on lectures given at a NATO ASI held in the summer of 1991 and discusses these new developments, both in theory and experiment. It constitutes the most up-to-date and comprehensive summary of the entire field.

Book excerpt: Membranes composed of amphiphilic molecules are highly flexible surfaces that determine the architecture of biological systems and provide a basic structural element for complex fluids such as microemulsions. Recently, a variety of new experimental methods such as X-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and atomic force microscopy have been used in order to study themolecular structure of these membranes. Their conformational behavior, on the other hand, is studied by optical and electron microscopy, which reveals that membranes in aqueous solution exhibit an amazing variety of different shapes. Several theoretical concepts are described suchas bending elasticity, curvature, and minimal surfaces in order to understand this polymorphism. These concepts are also useful to describe the behavior of membranes in complex fluids where they can build up hexagonal, lamellar, triply-periodic, cubic, and sponge phases. The contributions to this volume provide an up-to-date overview and describe thestate-of-the-art of this rapidly evolving field of research.

Book excerpt: Advanced Characterization of Nanostructured Materials — Probing the Structure and Dynamics with Synchrotron X-Rays and Neutrons is a collection of chapters which review the characterization of the structure and internal dynamics of a wide variety of nanostructured materials using various synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering techniques. It is intended for graduate students and researchers who might be interested in learning about and applying these methods. The authors are well-known practitioners in their fields of research who provide detailed and authoritative accounts of how these techniques have been applied to study systems ranging from thin films and monolayers on solid surfaces and at liquid-air, liquid-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces; nanostructured composite materials; battery materials, and catalytic materials. While there have been a great many books published on nanoscience, there are relatively few that have discussed in one volume detailed synchrotron X-ray and neutron methods for advanced characterization of nanomaterials in thin films, composite materials, catalytic and battery materials and at interfaces. This book should provide an incentive and a reference for researchers in nanomaterials for using these techniques as a powerful way to characterize their samples. It should also help to popularize the use of synchrotron and neutron facilities by the nanoscience community.

Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study In stitute held at Geilo, Norway, April 6 -16 1999. The ASI was the fifteenth in a series held biannually on topics related to cooperative phenomena and phase transitions, in this case applied to soft condensed matter and its configurations, dynamics and functionality. It addressed the current experimental and theoretical knowledge of the physical properties of soft condensed matter such as polymers, gels, complex fluids, colloids, granular materials and biomaterials. The main purpose of the lectures was to obtain basic understanding of important aspects in relating molecular configurations and dynamics to macroscopic properties and biological functionality. To our knowledge, the term Soft Condensed Matter was actually coined and used for the first time in 1989 at Geilo and some selected topics of soft matter were also given at Geilo in 1991, 1993 and 1995. A return to this subject 10 years after its instigation thus allowed a fresh look and a possibility for defining new directions for research.

Book excerpt: Physical Chemistry of Gas-Liquid Interfaces, the first volume in the Developments in Physical & Theoretical Chemistry series, addresses the physical chemistry of gas transport and reactions across liquid surfaces. Gas–liquid interfaces are all around us, especially within atmospheric systems such as sea spry aerosols, cloud droplets, and the surface of the ocean. Because the reaction environment at liquid surfaces is completely unlike bulk gas or bulk liquid, chemists must readjust their conceptual framework when entering this field. This book provides the necessary background in thermodynamics and computational and experimental techniques for scientists to obtain a thorough understanding of the physical chemistry of liquid surfaces in complex, real-world environments. 2019 PROSE Awards - Winner: Category: Chemistry and Physics: Association of American Publishers Provides an interdisciplinary view of the chemical dynamics of liquid surfaces, making the content of specific use to physical chemists and atmospheric scientists Features 100 figures and illustrations to underscore key concepts and aid in retention for young scientists in industry and graduate students in the classroom Helps scientists who are transitioning to this field by offering the appropriate thermodynamic background and surveying the current state of research
