Book excerpt: This workshop was the second of this series held on the island of santorini in the Cycladic Sea. The first one ("Mechanism of Action of the Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor", NATO ASI Se ries H, vol. 10) took place in May 1986 and focused on what was at the time the best studied of all neuroreceptors. This second one, held only two years later, demonstrates the im mense progress achieved since then in the field of neurorecep tors and ion channels. Molecular cloning techniques have now made available the primary structures of a whole array of ion channel proteins, and this in turn has shed light on some gen eral principles of the structure-function relationships of these central elements of intercellular communication. The purpose of this workshop was to explore the common ele ments in gene and protein structure of already cloned ion channel proteins, and to assess the status of other cloning projects in progress. It explicitly focused on very recently published and unpublished results. All participants kept to these goals thereby demonstrating the very value of such work shops for the progress of science.

Book excerpt: A volume in the Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology series. This book reviews the recent advances in our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control the assembly, transport, targeting and anchoring of the protein complexes making up the most important ion channels and receptor families, fundamental to synaptic function. Improved understanding of these processes is expected to reveal novel therapeutic targets relevant to a range of disease states. The first section of the book contains three chapters dealing with cation channels and provides an accessible, succinct and comprehensive account of what is known about the structures and the assembly and targeting of these multimeric proteins. The focus of the book then moves on to cover ligand-gated ion channels with two chapters on accetylcholine receptors. The final section of the book contains four chapters covering the excitatory and inhibitory amino acid receptors. Receptor and Ion-Channel Trafficking provides an integrated overview of the significant recent advances in the field of molecular neurobiology and will be essential reading for all researchers in neuroscience, neurobiology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology.

Book excerpt: Understanding how the brain works is undoubtedly the greatest challenge for human intelligence and one of the most ambitious goals of contemporary science. We are certainly far from this goal, but significant advancements in several fields of Neuroscience and Neurobiology are being obtained at an increasing pace. The NATO ASI School in Neurobiology, held in Erice May 2-12,1995, as the 23rd Course of the International School of Biophysics, provided an update on three basic topics: Biophysics and Molecular Biology ofIon Channels, Sensory Transduction, and Higher Order Functions. Current knowledge on these subjects was covered by formal lectures and critical discussions between lecturers and participants. This book collects original contributions from those scientists who attended the School. Many students presented their results in poster sessions, steering lively informal discussions. A selection of these contributions is also included. A major portion of the program of the School was devoted to a general overview of current trends of thought and experimental approaches in neurobiology, emphasising the importance of understanding molecular aspects of the elementary events underlying sensory transduction and processing in the nervous system, without indulging however in a pure reductionistic view of such complex phenomena. Recent studies of molecular biology and the electrophysiology of heterologously expressed ionic channels, have shed new light on the molecular mechanisms underlying ionic permeation of excitable membranes and its regulation by physical and chemical parameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acetylcholine nicotinic receptor is among the most studied receptors in neuroscience. Involved in muscle contraction and a wide variety of other neurological functions, including the processing of nicotine, it was the first receptor to be isolated and observed at the molecular level, providing a major research pathway for scientists working in neuroscience, biochemistry, pharmacology, and behavioral science. This book describes four decades of scientific research that inform our current understanding of this receptor. Jean-Pierre Changeux and Stuart J. Edelstein played important roles in pioneering research on the acetylcholine nicotinic receptor and on allosteric proteins, and here they reveal the complete scientific trajectory of that research. They begin with a historical perspective, describing how several fields converged around a single receptor and then explain the initial receptor purification and characterization. Subsequent chapters trace the investigations into various aspects of receptor structure and function, including the chemical structure of the binding site, the identity and properties of the ion channel, and the mechanism of signal transmission. In the final portion of the book, Changeux and Edelstein discuss recent studies on the three-dimensional structure of the receptor molecule and share their novel understanding of inherited diseases such as congenital myasthenia and epilepsy. They also address the integration of the receptor into its synaptic membrane environment and its distribution, physiology, and regulation in brain functions and cognition. Richly illustrated and lucidly written, this book provides an exceptional opportunity for scientists and students to follow a historic advance in our knowledge of molecular mechanisms and the workings of the brain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first Hiroshima Symposium of Neurotransmitter Receptors in 1983, there have been conspicuous advances in this field. For instance, our knowledge on transmembrane signalling mechanism has increased almost exponentially and this great stride has been linking areas of biology that had been previously considered of as being separate. The Second Hiroshima International Neurotransmitter Receptor Symposium was held on October 6 to 9 bringing together an outstanding group of neuroscientists from various disciplines to integrate these advances in the hope that their valuable contributions will make this meeting a tradition in this city. The original title of the Symposium was "Receptor Mechanism of Neurotransmitter and Neuropeptides". This volume is based on papers presented at this Second Hiroshima Symposium. Our aim editing this book is to discuss various neurotransmitter receptors in terms of their structural and biochemical properties, functions, ligands and related intracellular control mechanism, and to know the general denominators of all receptors. The editors believe that this book will provide a useful state-of-the-art summary of neuroreceptor fields at present and profit for those who could not participate in the Hiroshima Conference vicariously by reading the texts included in this volume. The editors acknowledge the help of many friends and colleagues in making this book possible. We are especially grateful to Dr. Shinobu Inagaki, former assistant professor of Third De-partment of Internal Medicine, Hiroshima University School of Medicine who made the Symposium successful as secretary-general through her devoted efforts.
