Download or read book Moksha written by Aldous Huxley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected writings from the author of Brave New World and The Doors of Perception on the role of psychedelics in society. • Includes letters and lectures by Huxley never published elsewhere. In May 1953 Aldous Huxley took four-tenths of a gram of mescaline. The mystical and transcendent experience that followed set him off on an exploration that was to produce a revolutionary body of work about the inner reaches of the human mind. Huxley was decades ahead of his time in his anticipation of the dangers modern culture was creating through explosive population increase, headlong technological advance, and militant nationalism, and he saw psychedelics as the greatest means at our disposal to "remind adults that the real world is very different from the misshapen universe they have created for themselves by means of their culture-conditioned prejudices." Much of Huxley's writings following his 1953 mescaline experiment can be seen as his attempt to reveal the power of these substances to awaken a sense of the sacred in people living in a technological society hostile to mystical revelations. Moksha, a Sanskrit word meaning "liberation," is a collection of the prophetic and visionary writings of Aldous Huxley. It includes selections from his acclaimed novels Brave New World and Island, both of which envision societies centered around the use of psychedelics as stabilizing forces, as well as pieces from The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell, his famous works on consciousness expansion.

It does not refer to freedom from political tyranny or from financial debt, but to breaking free from the prison of one's ignorance and ego. Moksha refers to a state of being, not a place, and is central to the religions of India. Besides Hinduism, it is also used in Jainism and Buddhism, though the latter prefers the word "nirvana." In all three religions, moksha is understood to mean "spiritual liberation," the closest equivalent to the Christian heaven. This book provides an easy-to-read overview of the journey towards Liberation, through the interrelated life endeavors of dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could we find happiness and attain mental peace without relinquishing our material goals? What if we could understand why we behave and act the way we do? How does our brain really trick us into many of the decisions we make every day? What if we could actually train our brain and improve our ability to lead a more meaningful life-not only for ourselves but also for society? In this brilliantly engaging read, Ashok Panagariya blends his life experiences with modern science and Indic philosophy to tackle these questions and shares tools that anyone can acquire to become a better 'brain-manager'. He delves deeply into the human mind, showing what makes the brain unique and the remarkable intrinsic capacity it holds to influence our lives. He does all this while making us acutely aware of the role luck and chance play in how we eventually shape up. Monk in a Merc is an insightful read for anyone looking to achieve eternal happiness and peace while still enjoying all that life offers-material wealth and professional success. It turns the table on the conventional understanding of monkhood, which seeks renunciation of material pursuits in search of a spiritual quest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artha-shastra is about generating food, i.e. wealth, by creating goods and services; Kama-shastra is about indulging our hungers with this food. Dharma-shastra insists we consider the hunger of others, while Moksha-shastra is about outgrowing our hungers, in order to be detached and generous. Together, these four Hindu shastras provide a framework within which human action, its purposes and consequences, can be defined; together, they validate human existence and give it meaning. In Dharma Artha Kama Moksha, Devdutt Pattanaik uses his unique understanding of mythology to provide an accessible and lucid guide to the Hindu way of thinking, with short essays that are crisp expositions of important concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes "After Yang," the basis for the acclaimed A24 film After Yang, starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Haley Lu Richardson, and directed by Kogonada. A New York Times Notable Book “A darkly mesmerizing, fearless, and exquisitely written work. Stunning, harrowing, and brilliantly imagined.” —Emily St. John Mandel, author of Station Eleven Children of the New World introduces readers to a near-future world of social media implants, memory manufacturers, dangerously immersive virtual reality games, and alarmingly intuitive robots. Many of these characters live in a utopian future of instant connection and technological gratification that belies an unbridgeable human distance, while others inhabit a post-collapse landscape made primitive by disaster, which they must work to rebuild as we once did millennia ago. In “The Cartographers,” the main character works for a company that creates and sells virtual memories, while struggling to maintain a real-world relationship sabotaged by an addiction to his own creations. In “After Yang,” the robotic brother of an adopted Chinese child malfunctions, and only in his absence does the family realize how real a son he has become. Children of the New World grapples with our unease in this modern world and how our ever-growing dependence on new technologies has changed the shape of our society. Alexander Weinstein is a visionary and singular voice in speculative fiction for all of us who are fascinated by and terrified of what we might find on the horizon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As this epic of the soul unfolds, we, the readers, are drawn into undulating waves of realities, at times, into almost otherworldly spaces, through the subtle art of this poet's creation. Of course, this experience is not new to anyone familiar with the other works of Antonio de Nicolas. From his acclaimed poetic translations of the Spanish masters: Juan Ramon Jimenez, Ignatius de Loyola, San Juan de la Cruz, to his own earlier collections of poetry: Remembering the God to Come and The Sea Tug Elegies and Of Angels and Women...Mostly, we have come to expect a certain mystical revelation to discreetly unveil itself within the pages of his work. But Moksha Smith takes us to an entirely different space, not of subtle mystical quiverings but of raw, exposed duende. Here, in Moksha Smith, we at last come face to face with the poet: a demiurge without a mask, a victorious hero who returns from the battle with his shield and not on it, much less behind it.
