Book excerpt: A study was made to compare nystagmic and subjective responses elicited at 10 RPM with responses elicited at 30 RPM when the axis of rotation was horizontal. When the same subjects were rotated about an Earth -horizontal axis at 10 and 30 RPM, the following differences in responses were noted: (1) Subjects who produced a unidirectional horizontal nystagmus throughout rotation at 10 RPM produced a reversing horizontal nystagmus after an interval (30 - 60 seconds) of rotation at 30 RPM. (2) Subjects, who gave veridical estimates of body orientation at 10 RPM, became disoriented at 30 RPM when nystagmus commenced reversing. At both 10 and 30 RPM a cyclic modulation of nystagmus was related to orientation relative to gravity. As in previous studies, sickness was produced by rotation about a horizontal axis, and a relationship between mental task and incidence of sickness was again noted. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the human body is exposed to vibration not only while traveling but also during leisure and domestic activities and in many occupations. This volume summarizes the current understanding of the many human responses to vibration.Divided into two parts, this book deals with whole-body vibrations and hand-transmitted vibration. In each part the experimental data and appropriate models are presented in detail so that readers can address practical problems. An extensive guide to national and international standards is provided, and a large multidisciplinary glossary of terms assists in understanding the relevant technical and medical jargon. This comprehensive reference volume is accessible to all those interested in human vibration: medical doctors, engineers, lawyers, scientists, and health and safety officials and administrators.LK uses the following bulleted list_This new text features:An up-to-date statement of current knowledge on human responses to vibrationA comprehensive glossary of terms in current use in the fields of vibration and human responseAn extensive bibliography and guide to national and international standards

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series, Volume 15: Vestibular Function on Earth and in Space provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of vestibular research. This book discusses the problems concerned with space, with emphasis on the importance of the vestibular apparatus in space flight. Organized into 32 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the mechanisms and processes for creating the chemical composition of endolymph. This text then examines the speculative comparisons between prolonged exposure in a manne weightless space station and in a rotating space station. Other chapters consider the relationships between vestibular nystagmus and degradation of visual acuity when the vestibular stimuli interfere with voluntary efforts to see specific visual detail. This book discusses as well the concepts concerning the distribution of function between semicircular canals and otolith organs. The final chapter deals with the method for selective marking of neurons after axonal transection. This book is a valuable resource for otologists and scientists.

Book excerpt: The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.

Book excerpt: Progress in Neurology and Psychiatry: An Annual Review, Volume 22 covers the significant advances in the understanding of neurophysiology, neuro-ophthalmology, and psychiatry. This volume is organized into four sections encompassing 33 chapters that also deal with the neurological aspects of pain and motor disorders. The first part discusses the fundamentals of neuroanatomy, general and regional neurophysiology, neuropathology, and the pharmacological aspects of the central nervous system. The second part examines the diagnosis, symptoms, and clinical features of neurological disorders. This part also explores the anatomical aspects of neuro-ophthalmology, otoneurology, and pediatric neurology. The third part reviews the surgical treatments for various neuro-related problems, including trauma, brain tumors, pain, and motor disorders. The fourth part considers the application of clinical psychiatry to the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders, both in children and adults. This book will prove useful to neurologists, clinicians, pediatricians, and psychiatrists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of this book are in my first attempts to understand psychology as a post-war student in the Cambridge of the late 1940s. Sir Frederic Bartlett and his colleagues in the Psychology Department were talking and writing about the concept of the skill as the fundamental unit of behaviour. This made entire sense to me but not apparently to very many other people because the movement dwindled rapidly with the retirement of Sir Frederic in 1952. It got lost within performance studies which were essentially behaviouristic and stimulus-response in origin, a quite different style of thinking from the gestalt approach of skill psychology. This is not a simple dichotomy of course and skill psychology does go some way towards the analytic approach in accepting that a science needs to have a basic element, a unit from which the complexities of real behaviour can be constructed. into which it can be analysed and in terms of which it can be described and understood. The trick is to pick the right unit and I think that skills is an appropriate unit for human behaviour. Note the plural, although these units are elements they are not identical any more than the ninety-odd elements of the physical world are identical. The issue is sometimes clarified by considering the analogy with the attempt to describe a house. The simplest observable elements here are the brick. the piece of stone or the piece of wood.
