Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Sabbath Questions for the People It is a delusion to suppose the gospel abrogates the law. It is not license to sin, but liberty by Obedience to the law. Our Lord did not destroy the law but fulfilled it. He accepted and Observed the Sabbath in common with all moral precepts and principles. The Sabbath as an institution is adapted to all classes and conditions Of people, and is promotive Of the highest well - being Of men upon earth. The greatest possible good is Offered man 1n the gospel. It leads him into the best condition of life. It is the remedy for the evils that scourge our race to - day. This gospel calls upon all men (a) to receive the Sabbath as a divine appointment. (b) It calls upon all men to Observe the Sabbath as an ordinance promotive Of the spiritual life. (c) The gospel requires the believer to sanctify the Sabbath as holy to the Lord. It should be made a memorial Of our Lord's resurrection from the dead. (d) If so it will be accepted With delight and kept holy out Of love for our risen Lord. Love is, the essence Of the gospel, the motive to all true Obedience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Studies of the Sabbath Question Advancing knowledge in the fields of physical and mental science, and of history, has greatly changed and enlarged our conceptions of God, man, and the universe Through our increasing knowledge of ancient peoples and religions we have been led to look upon all the great religions of the world as signs that men everywhere have been seeking after God, who met them on the highest level of their thought and desire. But as the Christian Scriptures, religion, and ethics, claim to be the true and the best, they must stand the test of history, experience, and reason. Industrial progress, new social conditions, and closer international relations, are the wonder, of our times, and must be reckoned with by us who believe in the final triumph of the religion and morals of the kingdom of Jesus Christ our Lord. Book excerpt: Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication--and has been read by thousands of people seeking meaning in modern life. In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel, one of the most widely respected religious leaders of the twentieth century, introduced the influential idea of an 'architecture of holiness" that appears not in space but in time. Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the materials things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that 'the Sabbaths are our great catherdrals.' Though the Sabbath question is extremely intricate, and embraces a variety of subjects, at first sight, foreign to it, it is hoped that, in the following Essay, an arrange ment has been adopted that secures at once simplicity, perspicuity, and logical sequence. By fixing the attention upon the leading features of the controversy, it will be found, that the historical view of Genesis ii. 1 - 3, the casual notice of the institution in Exodus xvi., and the morality of the fourth commandment, ate the fundamental principles. Book excerpt: We live in a 24/7 culture of endless productivity, workaholism, distraction, burnout, and anxiety--a way of life to which we've sadly grown accustomed. This tired system of "life" ultimately destroys our souls, our bodies, our relationships, our society, and the rest of God's creation. The whole world grows exhausted because humanity has forgotten to enter into God's rest. This book pioneers a creative path to an alternative way of existing. Combining creative storytelling, pastoral sensitivity, practical insight, and relevant academic research, Subversive Sabbath offers a unique invitation to personal Sabbath-keeping that leads to fuller and more joyful lives. A. J. Swoboda demonstrates that Sabbath is both a spiritual discipline and a form of social justice, connects Sabbath-keeping to local communities, and explains how God may actually do more when we do less. He shows that the biblical practice of Sabbath-keeping is God's plan for the restoration and healing of all creation. The book includes a foreword by Matthew Sleeth.

Book excerpt: The rise of printing had major effects on culture and society in the early modern period, and the presence of this new technology—and the relatively rapid embrace of it among early modern Jews—certainly had an effect on many aspects of Jewish culture. One major change that print seems to have brought to the Jewish communities of Christian Europe, particularly in Italy, was greater interaction between Jews and Christians in the production and dissemination of books. Starting in the early sixteenth century, the locus of production for Jewish books in many places in Italy was in Christian-owned print shops, with Jews and Christians collaborating on the editorial and technical processes of book production. As this Jewish-Christian collaboration often took place under conditions of control by Christians (for example, the involvement of Christian typesetters and printers, expurgation and censorship of Hebrew texts, and state control of Hebrew printing), its study opens up an important set of questions about the role that Christians played in shaping Jewish culture. Presenting new research by an international group of scholars, this book represents a step toward a fuller understanding of Jewish book history. Individual essays focus on a range of issues related to the production and dissemination of Hebrew books as well as their audiences. Topics include the activities of scribes and printers, the creation of new types of literature and the transformation of canonical works in the era of print, the external and internal censorship of Hebrew books, and the reading interests of Jews. An introduction summarizes the state of scholarship in the field and offers an overview of the transition from manuscript to print in this period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author writes: "The focus of this book is on Judaism as it expresses itself in the Jewish holidays. Through these days Judaism is most visible and most easily accessible. But this is meant to be more than a book about the holidays; rather, it is a book about the Jewish way through life and history. To celebrate the holidays is to relive by reliving the Jewish way. Over the centuries Jewish thought and values have been crystallized in religious behavior. Judaism's underlying structures of meaning—the understanding of the world, the direction of history, the values of life—have come to their classic expression in the holidays. This book seeks to uncover those patterns. "All halachic behaviors are dramatic/mimetic gestures articulating a central metaphor of living. Grasping the metaphor adds depth to action and joy to life. Entering into the holidays with this understanding widens the range of emotion and brings a whole new set of roles and personae into even the most conventional life. Living the Jewish way calls for a highly developed capacity for fantasy and playacting. If you will, one must be a bit of a ham to be a kosher Jew. I hope that by pointing out the roles we are summoned to play, this book will help release the creative imagination for religious living present in every person. "This is not to suggest that practice of the Jewish faith is all play, all fun and games. There have been times when this religion has brought painful memories, moral problematic conflicts with others, oppressive minutiae, and obligations so great I felt guilty no matter what I accomplished. Yet on balance the overwhelming effect has been to fill my life with a sense of Divine Presence and human continuity, bondedness, joy, textured living experiences full of love that make everything worthwhile. No wonder that over the course of history millions of Jews were willing to die, if necessary, for this faith. Through this book, I hope to show others why it is worth living for this faith. "This book is written for different types of readers: nonobservant Jews who seek new experiences to deepen their Jewish identity; observant Jews who wish to avoid the pitfall of practicing the details while missing the overarching goal; those lacking Jewish education who search for more information; learned Jews who search for new insights; and non-Jews who wish to understand the underlying visions of Judaism and who may find that it resonates in their own religious living."

Hess argued for the Jews to return to Palestine and suggested a socialist country where the Jews would become agrarianized through "redemption of the soil." This book was the first Zionist work to put the question of Jewish nationalism in the context of European nationalism.
