England has long been known as the place of origin of the modern racehorse, but the knowledge and practical skill which produced that magnificent animal, have also been turned in more practical directions, and the various breeds of horses for riding and for light and heavy draught have been wonder fully increased in value by the intelligent application to them of the same principles of selection and continuous improvement. Even in these days of universal competition, other nations still look to Great Britain as their model in all that pertains to Horse Breeding and Management. To England also belongs the honour of having first successfully applied the same principles to the improvement of the Breeds of Cattle and of Sheep. From the time of Robert Bakewell, who originated this movement in the middle of last century, progress has been steady and continuous.
