Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Medicine, Vol. 25: January-December, 1919 For political and other reasons, there has been no effort made on the part of municipal, county, or state health officers to participate actively in the promulgation of laws, ordi nances, or enactments that have had for their purpose the alleviation of conditions admittedly due to economic maladjustments. In the fulfilment of obligations, there is every reason to believe that the point of view of health officials will be of pronounced importance in the future in securing the passage of bills which seek to provide for more reasonable opportunities for correct living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Medicine, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Digest of Advances, Discoveries and Improvements in the Medical and Surgical Sciences; March 1919 With regard to the actual technic in dealing with wounds, the author seems disposed to prefer exposure by the ap method. To guard against hernia, he advocates Sargent's plan of loosening the pericranium from the scalp in such a way as to allow it to slide and to be sutured beneath the orifice in the latter. The brain can thus be perfectly covered in and the cutaneous wound quickly cicatrizes. Whenever an osteoplastic ap is practicable and, in this respect, De Martel's technic seems to differ from the majority of operators, he uses it because it affords a freer avenue of exposure, leaves no defect, serves temporarily for purposes of decompression, and is not followed by a cerebral hernia of mechanical origin, as is so often the case with the small classical trephining. Some of them even lack the very semblance of any support. Many cases of beriberi occur in well-nourished strong individuals, and the blood examination in acute or recent cases shows neither pernicious anaemia nor any anaemia at all. The author has examined the blood in a number of acute and chronic cases and has found no characteristic blood changes, although the cases of longer standing may show a varying degree of secondary anaemia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Medicine, 1900, Vol. 9 One of the principal modifications which has been observed in this class of cells in the different animals is the length of the process which extends to the periphery. In the lower order of ani mals, the hydra, for instance, this is short, and a striking peculiarity is ob served, particularly in the earthworm, or lumbricus. In this little animal the body of the bipolar cell is situated in the integument itself, the peripheral process necessarily, being very short, while the central process, which extends inward, is comparatively long. In another higher order of worm, in the nereis, for instance, Retzius and others have shown that the peripheral process of this bipolar cell is somewhat longer than in the lumbricus. (see Fig. Ascending in the scale of the animal kingdom, the peripheral proc ess of this bipolar sensory cell becomes longer and longer, the cell body being placed deeper and farther within the body, and finally, in mammals, the high est order of the animal kingdom, we find the body of these bipolar sensory cells collected in groups to form the ganglia of the posterior spinal nerve roots, and the corresponding ganglia of the cranial nerves. These bipolar sensory cells (which form the great avenues, and, with the exception of the organs of special sense, the only avenues through which incoming nerve currents reach the cen tral nervous system) in all probability respond not only to certain kinds of stimulation, such as that produced by contact with other bodies (as we are perhaps most likely to think), but, we have reason to believe, are sensitive and respond to nearly all other forms of stimulation that may act upon the body as well. It is well known, for instance, that the earthworm and other animals, although possessing no special sense organs (such as the eye, the ear, and the organs of smell), respond to light, to sound, and to certain odors when brought in contact; with the surface of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Medicine, Vol. 3: A Quarterly Digest of Advances, Discoveries, and Improvements in the Medical and Surgical Sciences; September, 1919 The Importance of the Food Factor. It is not generally suspected how largely success will depend upon a judicious diet reform. Meanwhile, science has at last entered upon an analytical study of the varied health giving properties distributed among our vegetable foods. It has long been contended by raw-vegetarians that an adequate proportion of uncooked vegetable food constitutes our best insurance of health, by providing nature's curative foods in their unimpaired efficiency. It is impossible to foretell how far this new path of research may conduct us in identifying fresh etiological types of deficiency disease and of other diseases, and in their prevention and treatment. Vitaminology is gradually extending its list of accessory factors of nutrition. Already it has been proved that the chemical in uence of free alkali and the physical in uences of heat and of dehydration considerably reduce the efficacy of the antiscorbutic factor. Prolonged boiling can abolish it, and it is almost completely destroyed by simple drying. The same also applies to the growth-promoting factor, water soluble B. It is therefore probable that vitamines are of unstable molce ular build; and that for the health purpose, as much of our vegetable supplies as we can enjoy in the raw state should not be cooked; while for the rest we should adopt the method of cooking least destructive of their beneficial action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1919, Vol. 158 Depending upon the locality, the etiological factors producing pneumonia may be expected to show variation. From experience in army base hospitals, two facts of importance have been rather universally recognized. The first fact refers to the general preva lence of the streptococcus (normally one of the hemolytic varieties) in pneumonia following measles. The second fact refers to the prevalence of the streptococcus, likewise one of the hemolytic varieties, as an organism associated in many localities with the pneumococcus in the production of epidemic pneumonia not pre ceded by measles or influenza, but as a distinct type in which the pneumococcus has appeared to play but a minor role. In certain localities, during the recent epidemic of influenzal pneumonia, the pneumococcus as the prevalent type of infection both in the acute disease and in the subsequent empyemas. In other localities the pneumococcus and streptococcus have been associated, while in others streptococcus pneumonias have been more frequently encountered than had been heretofore generally recognized. In the series of empyema here reported only those are included which required treatment by aspiration or operation. There were available for this report 35 empyema patients who recovered by repeated aspirations alone, while came to Operation. Those patients were not included who died within a few days of admission with an established diagnosis of empyema or those who died during the course of aspirations designed for their relief, but who, because of activity of the pneumonic process, acute bilateral empyema, purulent pericarditis, meningitis or other serious complications, were not considered reasonable operative risks. Because of the interest attached to variations of treatment, with increasing experience, these empyema patients have been grouped, depending largely upon three-time intervals, as follows' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Medicine, Vol. 4: A Quarterly Digest of Advances, Discoveries and Improvements in the Medical and Surgical Sciences; December, 1919 He first pays tribute to the memory of his great teacher Gaskell, who was the first to make clear the direction of the impulses in the sympathetic chain. To read an account of the sympathetic nervous system before Gaskell is like reading a description of the circulation of the blood before Harvey. Gaskell first Showed that the nerve fibers of the sympathetic group were of smaller calibre than the nerves to the skeletal muscles, and hence he was able to Show that there were fibers with visceral functions in the cranial and sacral nerves, subserving the functions of organic life and not under the control of the will. The term autonomic nervous system devised by Langley, is one in gen eral use, and Brown classifies the whole of the visceral or involuntary nervous system as follows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Journal of Medicine, Vol. 1: From November, 1836, to October, 1837, Inclusive A mention of the Arabian physicians suggests the ideas of astrological medicine, and ofa pharmacy more enriched with mineral preparations than that of the Greek school. Much of what they have written might, without any great loss to medical science, be expunged. But it is equally clear, that a better knowledge oftheir pre cepts and practice in certain diseases would have saved lives without number, in both Europe and America, since their time. Our reference is here more especially to eruptive fevers; and notably to small-pox and measles - though the same princi ples will govern in that large class of fevers marked by critical evacuations from, or determination to the skin. Rqss, who was born about the middle of the ninth century, enjoyed the highest reputation among his countrymen for his extensive and varied knowledge, not only in medicine but in all the sciences. To him we are in debted for a short but admirable treatise on the method of treating small-pox and measles, more particularly the former, which we do not hesitate to declare as among the best extant. The credit given to Sydenham for introducing the cooling regimen in fevers and acute eruptive diseases ought, with still greater reason, both on ao count of long priority and distinctness of direction, to be awarded to the Arabian physician. In his prophylaxis, and in the treatment on the inception of small-pox, and at its increment and decline, Rhazes is, to our mind, a clearer and safer guide than any with whom we are acquainted. These impressions, produced after a perusal of the work during the prevalence of the disease, and at a time when we had charge of a small-pox hospital, are confirmed by another reading since we began this brief notice of the Arabian school.
