This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers is a modern introduction to basic topics in mathematics at the undergraduate level, with emphasis on explanations and applications to real-life problems. There is also an 'Application' section at the end of each chapter, with topics drawn from a variety of areas, including neural networks, fluid dynamics, and the behavior of 'put' and 'call' options in financial markets. The book presents several modern important and computationally efficient topics, including feedforward neural networks, wavelets, generalized functions, stochastic optimization methods, and numerical methods.A unique and novel feature of the book is the introduction of a recently developed method for solving partial differential equations (PDEs), called the unified transform. PDEs are the mathematical cornerstone for describing an astonishingly wide range of phenomena, from quantum mechanics to ocean waves, to the diffusion of heat in matter and the behavior of financial markets. Despite the efforts of many famous mathematicians, physicists and engineers, the solution of partial differential equations remains a challenge. The unified transform greatly facilitates this task. For example, two and a half centuries after Jean d'Alembert formulated the wave equation and presented a solution for solving a simple problem for this equation, the unified transform derives in a simple manner a generalization of the d'Alembert solution, valid for general boundary value problems. Moreover, two centuries after Joseph Fourier introduced the classical tool of the Fourier series for solving the heat equation, the unified transform constructs a new solution to this ubiquitous PDE, with important analytical and numerical advantages in comparison to the classical solutions. The authors present the unified transform pedagogically, building all the necessary background, including functions of real and of complex variables and the Fourier transform, illustrating the method with numerous examples.Broad in scope, but pedagogical in style and content, the book is an introduction to powerful mathematical concepts and modern tools for students in science and engineering.

Book Synopsis Advanced Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers I by : Carl M. Bender
Download or read book Advanced Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers I written by Carl M. Bender and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear, practical and self-contained presentation of the methods of asymptotics and perturbation theory for obtaining approximate analytical solutions to differential and difference equations. Aimed at teaching the most useful insights in approaching new problems, the text avoids special methods and tricks that only work for particular problems. Intended for graduates and advanced undergraduates, it assumes only a limited familiarity with differential equations and complex variables. The presentation begins with a review of differential and difference equations, then develops local asymptotic methods for such equations, and explains perturbation and summation theory before concluding with an exposition of global asymptotic methods. Emphasizing applications, the discussion stresses care rather than rigor and relies on many well-chosen examples to teach readers how an applied mathematician tackles problems. There are 190 computer-generated plots and tables comparing approximate and exact solutions, over 600 problems of varying levels of difficulty, and an appendix summarizing the properties of special functions.

Download or read book Mathematical Methods for Optical Physics and Engineering written by Gregory J. Gbur and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 819 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first textbook on mathematical methods focusing on techniques for optical science and engineering, this text is ideal for upper division undergraduate and graduate students in optical physics. Containing detailed sections on the basic theory, the textbook places strong emphasis on connecting the abstract mathematical concepts to the optical systems to which they are applied. It covers many topics which usually only appear in more specialized books, such as Zernike polynomials, wavelet and fractional Fourier transforms, vector spherical harmonics, the z-transform, and the angular spectrum representation. Most chapters end by showing how the techniques covered can be used to solve an optical problem. Essay problems based on research publications and numerous exercises help to further strengthen the connection between the theory and its applications.

Book Synopsis Advanced Mathematical Methods in Science and Engineering, Second Edition by : S.I. Hayek
Download or read book Advanced Mathematical Methods in Science and Engineering, Second Edition written by S.I. Hayek and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-06-22 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom-tested, Advanced Mathematical Methods in Science and Engineering, Second Edition presents methods of applied mathematics that are particularly suited to address physical problems in science and engineering. Numerous examples illustrate the various methods of solution and answers to the end-of-chapter problems are included at the back of the book. After introducing integration and solution methods of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), the book presents Bessel and Legendre functions as well as the derivation and methods of solution of linear boundary value problems for physical systems in one spatial dimension governed by ODEs. It also covers complex variables, calculus, and integrals; linear partial differential equations (PDEs) in classical physics and engineering; the derivation of integral transforms; Green’s functions for ODEs and PDEs; asymptotic methods for evaluating integrals; and the asymptotic solution of ODEs. New to this edition, the final chapter offers an extensive treatment of numerical methods for solving non-linear equations, finite difference differentiation and integration, initial value and boundary value ODEs, and PDEs in mathematical physics. Chapters that cover boundary value problems and PDEs contain derivations of the governing differential equations in many fields of applied physics and engineering, such as wave mechanics, acoustics, heat flow in solids, diffusion of liquids and gases, and fluid flow. An update of a bestseller, this second edition continues to give students the strong foundation needed to apply mathematical techniques to the physical phenomena encountered in scientific and engineering applications.
