The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effect of ART on changes in one repetition maximum (1RM), dynamic muscle function, swelling, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and changes in MRI T2 relaxation times post exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD). Ten previously trained participants (at least 1 lower body resistance training session a week) were recruited from within the university community and divided in two groups: a cycling ART group (CG, n = 5) who performed three bouts of moderate intensity cycling in the four days following the EIMD protocol and a non-cycling group (NCG, n= 5) who performed no cycling in the four days following the EIMD protocol. DOMS affects athletic performance, therefore therapy is of interest to athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of localized vibration (biomechanical muscle stimulation, BMS) on biomarkers of DOMS following eccentric cycling, and to test changes in muscle length and soreness. We investigated if BMS reduces DOMS and enhances muscle function following eccentric exercise and if creatine kinase (CK), lactate, and pain were affected. Twenty-eight recreationally active men (18 - 40 years old) were randomized into control or BMS groups. Subjects performed 5 minutes of eccentric cycling, then either received BMS, or rested. Outcome variables, plasma creatine kinase, blood lactate, pain scores (Likert), muscle length, muscle pain (self-reported), and pressure algometry were collected at four intervals (baseline, pre-cycling, 24 hours post-cycling, and 48 hours post). A main effect of time was found for quadriceps pain threshold (F(3, 78) = 3.02, p = 0.04). A main effect of time was found regarding an increase in lactate (p = .016; T0 to T1) and decrease in lactate (p = .025; T1 to T3). A main effect of time for Likert pain score was found pre-cycling versus post-cycling (p = .0001). There were no significant interactions between group (BMS or control) and time. This study does not support our hypotheses regarding localized vibration and recovery from DOMS. However, we found significance regarding a main effect of time for pain threshold in the quadriceps, Likert pain score, and lactate level.

Book excerpt: Muscle H accumulation may be the primary causal factor in limiting high-intensity exercise (HIE) performance. It is proposed that eccentric-induced muscle damage caused by unaccustomed eccentric muscle contractions may lead to higher muscle lactate and H+ concentrations during HIE and an impaired ability to remove these metabolites after completion of the exercise bout. Impaired clearance of muscle lactate and H+ may be a direct effect of damage to the primary inter-cellular (and intra-cellular) transporters of lactate and H+, the monocarboxylate transporters (MCT). Eight male college-aged subjects performed either a muscle-damaging eccentric resistance exercise bout (ECC) or a maximal concentric (CON) bout of 100 maximal isokinetic repetitions. Two days following the resistance bout, subjects performed a graded HIE cycling bout to exhaustion. Muscle samples were taken from the right vastus lateralis prior to the HIE bout, immediately post-HIE, and 10 minutes following the HIE bout. Muscle lactate concentration, muscle pH, and muscle buffer capacity ([beta][subscript m]) were calculated. The ECC bout led to considerable muscle soreness (8 ± 2 arbitrary units vs 0 ± 0 for CON) and raised concentrations of plasma creatine kinase (ECC: 847 ± 330 U/L; CON: 226 ± 40 U/L). There was no significant interaction between ECC and CON across time in muscle lactate concentration, muscle pH, in-vivo [beta][subscript m] or in-vitro [beta][subscript m]. However, a moderate-to-large effect size for muscle lactate and H+ concentrations both immediately post-HIE and 10 minutes post-HIE indicate lower concentrations for ECC than in CON. Both groups showed similar rate of recovery of muscle lactate concentration over the 10 minutes post-HIE. There were no significant differences between groups in exercise performance. The slightly lower accumulation of lactate and H+ during the HIE bout following ECC, without a subsequent change in either the rate of recovery post-HIE or in the [beta][subscript m], suggests that eccentric-induced muscle damage may lead to lower production of lactate and H+ during HIE. The impaired ability of eccentrically damaged muscle to produce lactate and H+ during subsequent HIE may represent reduced glycolytic potential.
