Book excerpt: Optical second harmonic and sum-frequency generation has evolved into a useful spectroscopic tool for material characterization, especially as a viable and powerful technique for probing surfaces and interfaces. This book serves as an introduction on the technique. It provides a comprehensible description on the basics of the technique and gives detailed accounts with illustrating examples on the wide range of applications of the technique. It clearly points out the unique capabilities of the technique as a spectroscopic tool for studies of bulk and interface structures in different disciplines. This book is an updated version of an earlier book on the same subject, but it puts more emphasis on physical concepts and description. It underscores recent advances of sum-frequency spectroscopy at the technical front as well as over its wide range of applications, with the author's perspective in each area. Most chapters end with a section of summary and prospects that hopefully can help stimulate interest to further develop the technique and explore possibilities of applying the technique.

Book excerpt: Describing an innovative approach to phased-array control in antenna design This book explores in detail phased-array antennas that use coupled-oscillator arrays, an arrangement featuring a remarkably simple beam steering control system and a major reduction in complexity compared with traditional methods of phased-array control. It brings together in one convenient, self-contained volume the many salient research results obtained over the past ten to fifteen years in laboratories around the world, including the California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The authors examine the underlying theoretical framework of coupled-oscillator systems, clearly explaining the linear and nonlinear formalisms used in the development of coupled-oscillator arrays, while introducing a variety of state-of-the-art methodologies, design solutions, and tools for applying this control scheme. Readers will find: Numerous implementation examples of coupled-oscillator array prototypes A continuum model that permits application of diffusion theory to the analysis of phase dynamics A demonstration of the array behavior through experimental results that validate the linearized theory Examples of how incorporating coupling delay restores causality, including the latest published results Guidance on how to accurately analyze and optimize coupled-oscillator arrays using modern simulation tools A review of current developments, including the design of compact couple-oscillator array antennas Complete with 150 diagrams and photographs, Coupled-Oscillator Based Active-Array Antennas is a highly useful tutorial for antenna designers and a valuable reference for researchers and engineers wishing to learn about this cutting-edge technology.

Book excerpt: With the advent of wavelength routing and dynamic, reconfigurable optical networks, new demands are being made in the design and operation of optical amplifiers. This book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive review of optical amplifier technology in the context of these recent advances in the field. It demonstrates how to manage the trade-offs between amplifier design, network architecture and system management and operation. The book provides an overview of optical amplifiers and reconfigurable networks before examining in greater detail the issues of importance to network operators and equipment manufacturers, including 40G and 100G transmission. Optical amplifier design is fully considered, focusing on fundamentals, design solutions and amplifier performance limitations. Finally, the book discusses other emerging applications for optical amplifiers such as optical networks for high data rate systems, free space systems, long single span links and optical digital networks. This book will be of great value to R&D engineers, network and systems engineers, telecommunications service providers, component suppliers, industry analysts, network operators, postgraduate students, academics and anyone seeking to understand emerging trends in optical networks and the consequent changes in optical amplifier design, features and applications. Provides an in depth and focused review of the new reconfigurable network architecture and its impact on optical amplifiers Addresses 40G and 100G transmission and networking Written by experts in the field with deep technical knowledge and practical experience of commercial practice and concerns

This book was released on 2007 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of time delay on nonlinear oscillators is an important problem in the study of dynamical systems. Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers have an internal time scale set by the length of the laser's electromagnetic cavity. Long cavities allow thousands of modes to experience gain making it very difficult to model the lasers. We examine the effect of adding external time delays through feedback and coupling. In the first experiment an external time delay is added to a laser by adding a feedback loop to the cavity. These delay times are varied over four orders of magnitude by changing the length of fiber in the feedback loop. The laser intensity dynamics are examined using time series, power spectra, time delay embeddings, and spatiotemporal representations. We apply Karhunen-Lo'eve (KL) decomposition on the spatiotemporal representations and use the Shannon entropy as calculated from the KL eigenvalue spectra as a measure of the complexity of the dynamics. For long delays we find that the complexity increases as expected, but also that the fluctuation size increases. In the second experiment two lasers are mutually coupled together with a coupling time delay that is varied over four orders of magnitude. The analysis is repeated and we find the surprising result that the dynamical complexity decreases for short coupling delays as compared to the uncoupled lasers. Measurements of the optical spectra indicate a narrowing of the spectra indicating that the simplification in dynamics could be due to the reduction in the number of electromagnetic modes experiencing gain. The fluctuation size increases for all delay times and is largest when the internal and external time delays match. Lag-synchrony is also observed for the mutually coupled lasers. Recent modeling using Ikeda ring oscillators showed that stable isochronal synchrony could be achieved if a third drive.
