Book Synopsis Unsaturated Flow in Hydrologic Modeling by : H.J. Morel-Seytoux
Download or read book Unsaturated Flow in Hydrologic Modeling written by H.J. Morel-Seytoux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume certainly is a Conference Proceedings, the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Unsaturated Flow in Hydrologic Modeling" held at "Les Villages du Soleil" near ArIes, France from June 13 to 17, 1988. Let me therefore acknowledge properly, at the very beginning, the gratitude of all the participants to the NATO Science Committee for its generous support and worthwhile goal of bringing together scientists of many countries to communicate and share their experiences. Particular thanks are extended to the director of the program, Dr. Luis Vega da Cunha for his interest and understanding. On the other hand this volume is also, and probably more so, a Textbook that fills a gap in the field of unsaturated flow. Many treatises on the subject present the theory in its different aspects. Hardly any explain in details how the different pieces can be put together to address realistic problems at the basin scale. The various invited contributions to the ARW were structured in a subject progression much as chapters are organized in a book. The intent of the ARW was to assess the current state of knowledge in "Unsaturated Flow" and its use in "Hydrologic Modeling Practice". In a sense the interest in fundamentals of unsaturated flow in this ARW was not just for the sake of knowledge but also and primarily for the sake of action. Can such fundamental knowledge be utilized for better management of the water resource? was the basic question.
Book Synopsis Forest Hydrology by : Devendra Amatya
Download or read book Forest Hydrology written by Devendra Amatya and published by CABI. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests cover approximately 26% of the world's land surface area and represent a distinct biotic community. They interact with water and soil in a variety of ways, providing canopy surfaces which trap precipitation and allow evaporation back into the atmosphere, thus regulating how much water reaches the forest floor as through fall, as well as pull water from the soil for transpiration. The discipline "forest hydrology" has been developed throughout the 20th century. During that time human intervention in natural landscapes has increased, and land use and management practices have intensified. The book will be useful for graduate students, professionals, land managers, practitioners, and researchers with a good understanding of the basic principles of hydrology and hydrologic processes.
Download or read book FEFLOW written by Hans-Jörg G. Diersch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 996 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FEFLOW is an acronym of Finite Element subsurface FLOW simulation system and solves the governing flow, mass and heat transport equations in porous and fractured media by a multidimensional finite element method for complex geometric and parametric situations including variable fluid density, variable saturation, free surface(s), multispecies reaction kinetics, non-isothermal flow and multidiffusive effects. FEFLOW comprises theoretical work, modeling experiences and simulation practice from a period of about 40 years. In this light, the main objective of the present book is to share this achieved level of modeling with all required details of the physical and numerical background with the reader. The book is intended to put advanced theoretical and numerical methods into the hands of modeling practitioners and scientists. It starts with a more general theory for all relevant flow and transport phenomena on the basis of the continuum approach, systematically develops the basic framework for important classes of problems (e.g., multiphase/multispecies non-isothermal flow and transport phenomena, discrete features, aquifer-averaged equations, geothermal processes), introduces finite-element techniques for solving the basic balance equations, in detail discusses advanced numerical algorithms for the resulting nonlinear and linear problems and completes with a number of benchmarks, applications and exercises to illustrate the different types of problems and ways to tackle them successfully (e.g., flow and seepage problems, unsaturated-saturated flow, advective-diffusion transport, saltwater intrusion, geothermal and thermohaline flow).

Book Synopsis The Mimetic Finite Difference Method for Elliptic Problems by : Lourenco Beirao da Veiga
Download or read book The Mimetic Finite Difference Method for Elliptic Problems written by Lourenco Beirao da Veiga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the theoretical and computational aspects of the mimetic finite difference method for a wide class of multidimensional elliptic problems, which includes diffusion, advection-diffusion, Stokes, elasticity, magnetostatics and plate bending problems. The modern mimetic discretization technology developed in part by the Authors allows one to solve these equations on unstructured polygonal, polyhedral and generalized polyhedral meshes. The book provides a practical guide for those scientists and engineers that are interested in the computational properties of the mimetic finite difference method such as the accuracy, stability, robustness, and efficiency. Many examples are provided to help the reader to understand and implement this method. This monograph also provides the essential background material and describes basic mathematical tools required to develop further the mimetic discretization technology and to extend it to various applications.
Book Synopsis Subsurface Flow and Transport by : Gedeon Dagan
Download or read book Subsurface Flow and Transport written by Gedeon Dagan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a major method in modelling the flow of water and transport of solutes in the subsurface, a subject of considerable interest in the exploitation and preservation of water resources. The stochastic approach allows the uncertainty which affects various properties and parameters to be incorporated in models of subsurface flow and transport. These much more realistic models are of greater use in, for example, modelling the transport and build-up of contaminants in groundwater. The volume is based on the second Kovacs Colloquium organised by the International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO) and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences. Fifteen leading scientists with international reputations review the latest developments in this area. The book is a valuable reference work for graduate students, research workers and professionals in government and public institutions, interested in hydrology, environmental issues, soil physics, petroleum engineering, geological engineering and applied mathematics.

Book Synopsis River Flow 2014 by : Anton J. Schleiss
Download or read book River Flow 2014 written by Anton J. Schleiss and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 2579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviour of river systems is a result of the complex interaction between flow, sediments, morphology and habitats. Furthermore, rivers are often used as a source of water supply and energy production as well as a waterway for transportation. The main challenge faced by river engineers today, in collaboration with environmental and ecological scientists, is to restore the channelized rivers under the constraints of high urbanization and limited space, as well as sustainable water use. During the seventh International Conference on Fluvial Hydraulics “River Flow 2014” at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, scientists and professionals from all over the world addressed this challenge and exchanged their knowledge regarding fluvial hydraulics and river morphology. This book comprises the proceedings of the high quality contributions of the participants, which reflect the state-of-the-art in the fields of river hydrodynamics, morphodynamics, sediment transport, river engineering and restoration. The conference was organized under the auspices of the Committee on Fluvial Hydraulics of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). Past River Flow conferences have witnessed a significant increase in participation of our community of river engineers and researchers, confirming the need for such a forum.
