Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F-region irregularities near the equator are viewed from the concept of the temporal structure of UHF scintillations and the electron content depletions associated with VHF, UHF and GHz scintillations. Near the equatorial anomaly crest, the solar cycle effect on GHz scintillation and the depolarization of VHF satellite signals are probed along with electron density irregularities using in-situ data coupled with VHF/GHJz scintillation. Occurrence of nighttime VHF scintillation in the Indian sector near the anomaly is addressed. In the midlatitude sector, coordinated incoherent scatter radar, total electron content and scintillation measurements are studied in the investigation of the generation of km-scale irregularities which spatial variability of total electron content is analyzed in the Mediterranean region. At high latitudes, in-situ measurements provide the opportunity for scintillation modelling which low-energy electron precipitation measurements have been correlated with scintillations/TEC in the auroral oval. The nature of ionospheric irregularities generated by high-power, high-frequency heating has also been investigated and shown to vary between two sites studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ionosphere is a layer of the Earth's atmosphere that extends from about 50 km to 1000 km above the Earth's surface. It is ionized by solar radiation, which creates ions and free electrons in the upper atmosphere. These ions and electrons reflect radio waves back to the Earth's surface, allowing long-distance radio communication as well as absorption of harmful solar radiation. Ionospheric conductivity monitoring assesses the state of the ionosphere and improves the accuracy of satellite communications. This book is organized into two sections on the influence and impact of transient or orbiting humanmade objects into the ionosphere and the monitoring and modeling of the temporal evolution of the ionosphere. The information presented will lead to a better understanding and forecasting of the ionosphere’s dynamic.

Modeling the Ionosphere-Thermosphere System brings together for the first time a detailed description of the physics of the IT system in conjunction with numerical techniques to solve the complex system of equations that describe the system, as well as issues of current interest. Volume highlights include discussions of: Physics of the ionosphere and thermosphere IT system, and the numerical methods to solve the basic equations of the IT system The physics and numerical methods to determine the global electrodynamics of the IT system The response of the IT system to forcings from below (i.e., the lower atmosphere) and from above (i.e., the magnetosphere) The physics and numerical methods to model ionospheric irregularities Data assimilation techniques, comparison of model results to data, climate variability studies, and applications to space weather Providing a clear description of the physics of this system in several tutorial-like articles, Modeling the Ionosphere-Thermosphere System is of value to the upper atmosphere science community in general. Chapters describing details of the numerical methods used to solve the equations that describe the IT system make the volume useful to both active researchers in the field and students.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ionosphere is one of the largest sources of error in the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning not only because the ionospheric refraction can induce errors of several meters in the satellite-receiver signals ranges but also due to the frequent occurrence of plasma density irregularities that lead to signal degradation when crosses them. The effect of the ionospheric irregularities on GNSS signals can be quantified by estimating the TEC (Total Electron Content) from dual frequency GNSS observations. At mid-latitudes it is expected that TEC values vary smoothly in the quiet periods whereas large electron density irregularities occurrence will be related to magnetic storms and other Space Weather phenomena. On the other hand, the physical characteristics of the ionosphere at low magnetic latitudes induce, among other phenomena, the appearance of a peculiar kind of irregularities known as equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) which are characterized by TEC depletions. The difference in the physics of the ionosphere at low-latitudes and mid-latitudes marks one of the fundamental guidelines of this Doctoral Thesis and the ROT (Rate of change of TEC) parameter is introduced to evaluate the changes in the electron content over time. In the case of positioning performed using dual-frequency receivers, the error introduced by the ionosphere can, in first approximation, be eliminated by the correction known as "ionospheric-free combination" (iono-free). However, significant errors in the height estimated by Precise Point Positioning (PPP) has been observed in the presence of strong variation in the ROT...

Book excerpt: The orbiting HiLat satellite launched in 1983 offered an opportunity for studying ionospheric scintillation parameters in relation to in-situ measurements of ionization density, drift velocity, field-aligned current, and particle precipitation during the sunspot minimum period. This report discusses results of a morphological study based on observations of scintillations and total electron content (TEC) at the auroral oval station at Tromso, Norway, during the period Dec 1983 - Oct 1985. The geometrical enhancement of scintillations observed during alignment of the propagation with the local magnetic L-shell is shown to be the most consistent and conspicuous feature of scintillations in the nighttime auroral oval. The dynamics of the spatial and temporal extent of this region are illustrated in the invariant latitude/magnetic local time grid. Steepening of phase spectral slope in the geometrical enhancement region is indicative of the presence of L-shell aligned sheet-like irregularities at long scale lengths. The seasonal variation of TEC determined from the differential Doppler measurements of HiLat transmissions is discussed in relation to the in-situ density measurements at 830 km. The results are also used to illustrate the dependence of ionospheric structure parameters on short-term variability of solar activity during the sunspot minimum period. This study provides an insight into the nature of magnetospheric coupling with the ionosphere at high latitudes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since current empirical models specifying low-latitude electron density profiles severely underestimate the daytime plasma density scale-height and total electron content (TEC), a Semi-empirical, Low-latitude, Ionospheric Model (SLIM) was developed which is not only more realistic but is also computationally fast. Electron density profiles (180 to 1800 km) are theoretically calculated as a function of latitude (every 2 deg between 24 N and 24 S dip latitude) and local time (every half-hour over 24 hours LT) by solving the time-dependent plasma continuity equation. Assuming a Chapman-like profile, sets coefficients are then generated which reproduce these individual profiles. The coefficients themselves are easily stored, quickly retrieved and form the basis for a fast, portable, semi-empirical computer code. This report describes briefly the input parameters used to theoretically calculate profiles and the procedures used to generate the coefficients. The SLIM profiles are compared with the Chiu and Bent empirical models for Equinox, solar maximum conditions. Finally electron densities, the coefficients, TEC and 6300 A airglow intensities are listed in tabular form for three seasons (Equinox, June solstice, and December solstice) and two solar cycle periods (solar maximum and solar minimum).
