Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the physics of suspensions of bubbles, droplets, and solid particles in both gases and fluids. Rather than treating each combination separately, a unified approach is used that permits most particle-fluid combination types to be discussed together. To do this, the book first presents a detailed discussion of the basic particle motions that small particles can sustain, paying particular attention to translations and pulsations, and to the thermal effects that occur as a result of those motions. The book then introduces the reader to the dynamics and thermodynamics of suspensions, with acoustic motions providing the main focus in the latter part of the book. The important acoustic problems of attenuation and dispersion are discussed from several fundamental perspectives. The book concludes with applications of acoustic techniques to the characterization and modification of suspensions by means of acoustic waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Continuous Media: A Collection of Problems with Solutions for Physics Students contains a set of problems with detailed and rigorous solutions. Aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students in physics and applied mathematics, the book is a complementary text for standard courses on the physics of continuous media. With its assortment of standard problems for beginners, variations on a theme, and original problems based on new trends and theories in the physics under investigation, this book aids in the understanding of practical aspects of the subject. Topics discussed include vectors, tensors, and Fourier transformations; dielectric waves in media; natural optical activity; Cherenkov radiation; nonlinear interaction of waves; dynamics of ideal fluids and the motion of viscous fluids; convection; turbulence and acoustic and shock waves; the theory of elasticity; and the mechanics of liquid crystals.

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how the science of computational multiphase flow began in an effort to better analyze hypothetical light water power reactor accidents, including the “loss of coolant” accident. Written in the style of a memoir by an author with 40 years’ engineering research experience in computer modeling of fluidized beds and slurries, multiphase computational fluid dynamics, and multiphase flow, most recently at Argonne National Laboratory, the book traces how this new science developed during this time into RELAP5 and other computer programs to encompass realistic descriptions of phenomena ranging from fluidized beds for energy and chemicals production, slurry transport, pyroclastic flow from volcanoes, hemodynamics of blood-borne cells, and flow of granular particulates. Such descriptions are not possible using the classical single-phase Navier-Stokes equations. Whereas many books on computational techniques and computational fluid dynamics have appeared, they do not trace the historical development of the science in any detail, and none touch on the beginnings of multiphase science. A robust, process-rich account of technologic evolution, the book is ideal for students and practitioners of mechanical, chemical, nuclear engineering, and the history of science and technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific computing, which involves the analysis of complex systems in real applications with numerical simulations, is becoming an important field of research in itself, in relation to theoretical investigations and physical experiments. In many cases, the underlying mathematical models consist of large systems of partial differential equations, which have to be solved with high accuracy and efficiency. Among the successful methods, in particular for discretizations on unstructured grids, are the Finite Volume schemes. The first symposium of the series was held in Rouen in 1996.
