Book excerpt: Quantitative models in marketing typically focus on the household as the unit of analysis while ignoring the individual family members' behavior and behavioral interactions among household members. However, knowledge of such intra-household behavioral interaction enables marketers to target their communications more effectively. In this paper, we propose a modeling framework to capture the intra-household behavioral interaction based on family members' actual consumption behavior over time. We develop a model to capture multiple agents' (more than two individuals') simultaneous choice decisions over more than two choice alternatives. This is extremely difficult with other previously developed modeling approaches. We apply the proposed model to a context of family member's television viewing, and simultaneously model whether TV is on, which type of programs is playing and which family member(s) is(are) watching. The proposed model allows us to estimate the individual's intrinsic preference and the extrinsic preference from a joint consumption with other members. These estimates allow us to test several alternative group decision-making heuristics that may operate in those joint consumption occasions and conduct managerially useful counterfactual simulations.

Within the broad spectrum of modeling social-recreational activities and travel, this study focuses on three major aspects: Modeling the Generation of Social-Recreational Patterns, Modeling the Choice of Household Vehicle for Social-Recreational Tours, and Modeling the Choice of Time of Day for Joint Social-Recreational Tours. This study uses data from the 2009 National Household Travel Survey conducted in the United States for the estimation of all models. The empirical scope of this work is largely restricted to the analysis of the behavior of couple households (two-adults comprising a male-female couple with or without children). In the context of the generation of social-recreational activity patterns, interpersonal interactions within a household are largely in the form of trade-offs between solo and joint activity participation decisions. This research compares four methods, depending on different decision-making units, that are capable of capturing such interactions between household heads: multinomial logit models, multilinear logit models, parallel choice constrained logit models, and tri-variate binary probit models.

Book excerpt: This research increases the overall understanding of a subset of interactions that influence patterns of behaviour: intra-household interactions and spatial interactions. Understanding these interactions and their influence on travel behaviour is essential to developing policy sensitive models. These models provide much of the prerequisite information for evidence based planning. This understanding is framed through a review of existing best practices in travel demand modelling and a discussion of how independent models can be integrated within a larger framework. The thesis presents four empirical models that incorporate either one or both interactions. A model of joint household mode choice which incorporates decisions regarding joint travel and vehicle allocation is estimated. To accomplish this, the model uses a novel choice set formation technique. This is the first modelling to accomplish these tasks simultaneously. Models of transit station location choice are estimated using a newly proposed model structure, the spatially weighted error correlation model. These spatial models are used to compare the difference between independent (transit accessed by driving alone) and joint (transit accessed by being dropped off) spatial choices. The presented model outperforms existing models used to capture the same trend and provides new behavioural insights. A model of chauffeur allocation and location choice for daycare trips is estimated. This model incorporates spatial constraints in this decision through the application of a stochastic frontier model to generate task allocation specific spatial choice sets. This allows for a reduction in the sampling frame for spatial choices. Finally, a model of high school escort and household mode choice is estimated using a parallel constrained choice logit formulation. This empirical investigation generalizes the parallel constrained choice logit to allow for any number of household members to be considered. Concurrently, this empirical analysis highlights a flaw within an existing "best practice" modelling framework.

Book excerpt: In this paper, a formal test of intra-household commitment is derived and performed. To that end, two models of household intertemporal behavior are developed. In both models, household members are characterized by individual preferences. In the first formulation, household decisions are always on the ex-ante Pareto frontier. In the second model, the assumption of intra-household commitment required by ex-ante efficiency is relaxed. It is shown that the full-efficiency household Euler equations are nested in the no-commitment Euler equations. Using this result, the hypothesis that household members can commit to future allocations of resources is tested using the Consumer Expenditure Survey. I strongly reject this hypothesis. It is also shown that the standard unitary framework is a special case of the full-efficiency model. However, if household members are not able to commit, household intertemporal behavior cannot be characterized using the standard life-cycle model. These findings have two main implications. First, policy makers can change household behavior by modifying the decision power of individual household members. Second, to evaluate programs designed to improve the welfare of household members, it would be beneficial to replace the standard unitary model with a characterization of household behavior that allows for lack of commitment.

In the first chapter I study how identity assimilation efforts affect the intra-household decision process. Using a spatial dynamic panel model I find that a social distance based on gender-role identity weakens the impacts of members' preference or the presence of children on labor supply. However, the labor supply decision can be affected by factors beyond a household. The second chapter deals with peer effects that affect females' post-schooling investment in the Netherlands. By using spatial interaction with origin-destination flows models I provide the strong evidence that more population of career-oriented females can lead to higher wage growth among females. The paper also shows that the intra-household interaction with a partner can lead to low post-schooling investments among females. In the third paper, I examine the impact of crop diversification and crop choice on the post-crisis resilience for subsistence farmers. Applying a Heckman selection model to survey data conducted in Ethiopia, I show that household head's impulsivity rather than crop diversification plays a critical role as a limiting constraint, which interplays with their crop choice and affects the household's resilience.
