Book excerpt: Trees compete for various resources such as sunlight, water, and nutrients, which can be expressed as numerical terms, called competition indices (CI). Competition between individual trees is correlated with their growth and mortality. Therefore, CIs are used as independent variables to develop, improve and modify growth and yield models. This study was conducted to test the effect of neighborhood competition on tree diameter growth among Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg) and red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), in the Pacific Northwest Coast Range, USA. After testing seven distance-independent CIs and three distance-dependent CIs, only the distance-independent CIs were found to significantly affect the diameter growth model. Among them, CIs with basal area and diameter information were the most impactful. As a result, a simple CI was very effective in a model that accounts for the basal area information of different tree species.

Book excerpt: This book discusses advanced statistical methods that can be used to analyse ecological data. Most environmental collected data are measured repeatedly over time, or space and this requires the use of GLMM or GAMM methods. The book starts by revising regression, additive modelling, GAM and GLM, and then discusses dealing with spatial or temporal dependencies and nested data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Describes a species-specific, distance-independent individual-tree diameter growth model for the Northeastern United States. Diameter growth is predicted in two steps using a two parameter, sigmoidal growth function modified by a one parameter exponential decay function with species-specific coefficients. Coefficients are presented for 28 species groups. The model accounts for variability in annual diameter growth due to species, tree size, site quality, and the tree's competitive position within the stand. Model performance is evaluated using the mean predicted error and the root mean square error. Results are presented for the calibration data and an independent validation data set. The model has been, incorporated into NE-TWIGS, a computerized forest growth model for the Northeastern United States.S3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an lUlffianaged woodland, forest development follows a succession of periods of undisturbed natural growth, interrupted by intermediate loss or damage of trees caused by fire or wind or other natural hazards. In a managed woodland, the most important periodic disturbances are the thinning operations, which are often carried out at regular intervals and which usually have a significant effect on the future evolution of the resource. Thus, a realistic model of forest development includes both natural growth and thinnings. The key to successful timber management is a proper understanding of growth processes, and one of the objectives of modelling forest development is to provide the tools that enable foresters to compare alternative silvicultural treatments. Foresters need to be able to anticipate the consequences of a particular thinning operation. In most cases, total timber volume is not a very appropriate measure for quantifying growth or yields, or changes caused by thinning operations. Yield in economic terms is defined by the dimensions and quality attributes of the harvestable logs, and estimating timber products is a central issue of production-oriented growth and yield research. Introduction 2 Growth modelling is also an essential prerequisite for evaluating the consequences of a particular management action on the future development of an important natural resource, such as a woodland ecosystem.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes methods that can be used to evaluate stand and tree growth response to a single application of fertilization and/or thinning with data collected from multiple installations. Two kinds of methods were proposed: (1) structure analysis which applies covariance analysis in a blocked design with and without sampling units, and (2) multi-step analysis which first fits a control model to control data and then uses it to evaluate treatment response. Ideally, the former method is preferred to the latter method for evaluating the treatment response. However, when the experimental data are large in sampling size and/or complex in their designed structure, structure analysis often can not be performed on most statistical packages, and, therefore, the multi-step analysis is a viable alternative. The methods were applied in modeling fertilization and thinning effects on Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] dominant height growth and diameter growth of single trees. Both responses due to improved nutrition from a single application of nitrogen fertilizer were significant (a=O.05) in the first 5-year growth period, and not significant after two 5-year cycles. The response in diameter growth was stronger than that in dominant height growth. Thinning neither increased nor decreased the dominant height growth. It accelerated diameter growth, but the interaction of fertilization with thinning was not significant. As a comparison, both structure analysis and two-step analysis were used to model the direct effect of fertilization on the gross basal area growth of plots. The results showed that the appropriate variance estimates to test the significance of the parameters in fertilizer response equation were larger when using two-step analysis than when using structure analysis.
