Book excerpt: Annotation Since the invention of the V-2 rocket during World War II, combustion instabilities have been recognized as one of the most difficult problems in the development of liquid propellant rocket engines. This book is the first published in the United States on the subject since NASA's Liquid Rocket Combustion Instability (NASA SP-194) in 1972. In this book, experts cover four major subject areas: engine phenomenology and case studies, fundamental mechanisms of combustion instability, combustion instability analysis, and engine and component testing. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of technical information from Russia and China--a first.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate theory based on the Galerkin method was developed to describe the nonlinear behavior of axial-mode combustion instability in solid-propellant rocket motors and T-burners. For motors with linear combustion driving and linear particle damping (gasdynamic nonlinearities only), growth rates, limiting amplitudes and waveforms were in reasonable agreement with available 'exact' numerical solutions and experimental data. For T-burners the predicted limiting amplitudes were considerably higher than the experimentally measured values. To assess the importance of combustion nonlinearities, a heuristic nonlinear combustion response model was introduced into the approximate analysis. REsults obtained with both the approximate model and the 'exact' analysis showed that nonlinear combustion effects may be important for moderate amplitudes and may account for pulsed instabilities in some cases. The higher Reynolds number correction to the Stokes Drag Law was also included in both the approximate and 'exact' analyses. Results show that nonlinear particle effects become increasingly important as particle size and/or frequency increases. Also, particle nonlinearities may have a significant effect on optimum particle size for maximum damping and may account for pulsed instabilities in some cases. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the current effort was to improve the utility, efficiency and accuracy of the previously developed nonlinear longitudinal combustion instability program. A finite difference procedure has been substituted for the method of characteristics solution of the governing equations of motion. The range of allowable motor and grain geometries has been greatly extended. In addition, the two-phase analysis has been extended to multiple particle sizes. A comparison with data from a small laboratory pulse motor has demonstrated that the present nonlinear model is capable of quantitatively predicting limiting amplitude when the combustion response of the propellant is adequately characterized. The program has also been modified to make it applicable to T-burners. A vent model which accounts for acoustic radiation losses has been developed. Separate nonlinear particle damping and uncoupled nonlinear combustion response studies have been carried out. (Modified author abstract).

This book was released on 1974 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear axial-mode combustion instability remains a serious problem in the development of solid propellant rocket motors. Although the use of metal-loaded solid propellants which produce solid particles in the flow has reduced the occurrence of high frequency instabilities, it has not eliminated the axial-mode intermediate frequency (100 - 1000 Hz.) problem. If such an instability reaches a large amplitude limit cycle, it may lead to an increase in mean chamber pressure and burning rate, excessive heat transfer rates, and a severe vibration level. The objective of this report is to investigate the complex coupling between the chamber flow conditions and the solid propellant combustion process which may lead to large amplitude longitudinal instabilities. Book excerpt: Analytical models are developed for the multi-dimensional combustion instability analysis of solid propellant rocket motors. This research was motivated by the need for improvement of the current practice in combusiton instability analysis. For example, the burning rates and response functions are affected by the extremely complex flowfield. The flow is three-dimensional or at least two-dimensional in axisymmetric geometries; vortex motions and turbulent flows must be adequately calculated; the coupling mechanism of acoustic and hydrodynamic wave oscillations and particle damping should be clarified. These flowfield phenomena, after all, are originated from the flame zone activities - oscillatory behavior of all field variables such as temperature, velocity, pressure, density of the gas, and fuel fractions. The response functions, which serve as boundary conditions for the flowfield can be calculated from the first and second order perturbation eigenvalue analyses of the flame zone governing equations. The effect of velocity coupling appears, naturally, in the second order (nonlinear) solutions. All calculations are carried out using the finite element method. Some of the findings are summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of a solid propellant rocket motor is generally constrained to meet specific ballistic requirements which are, in turn, imposed by vehicle trajectory considerations. Since the abnormalities associated with combustion instability are characterized by rapid and often severe fluctuations of motor pressure and thrust, unstable operation cannot usually be tolerated in flight vehicles. Consequently, care must be taken during the development phase to design towards stable operation and to dynamically test prototype motors. The nonlinear longitudinal mode of combustion instability is often encountered in motors containing aluminized propellants and has had an important influence on a number of Canadian development programs. The present paper is based on extensive experimental studies of this phenomenon carried out at the Defence Research Establishment Valcartier. This work has yielded a good phenomenological description of the instability, design criteria and guidelines and evaluation techniques which can be of considerable utility to the motor designer. These are described with the aid of typical data. (Author).
