The technique employs stochastic dynamic programming and permits the analysis of behavioral adaptations wherein organisms respond to changes in their environment and in their own current physiological state. Models can be constructed to reflect sequential decisions concerned simultaneously with foraging, reproduction, predator avoidance, and other activities. The authors show how to construct and use dynamic behavioral models. Part I covers the mathematical background and computer programming, and then uses a paradigm of foraging under risk of predation to exemplify the general modeling technique. Part II consists of five "applied" chapters illustrating the scope of the dynamic modeling approach. They treat hunting behavior in lions, reproduction in insects, migrations of aquatic organisms, clutch size and parental care in birds, and movement of spiders and raptors. Advanced topics, including the study of dynamic evolutionarily stable strategies, are discussed in Part III.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I present a new approach to capturing dependence across time in dynamic choice data. To achieve this, I develop a state space dynamic choice model and a novel algorithm to fit the data. Instead of capturing dependence in outcomes through lagged response variables, referred to as state dependence, I introduce a lagged utility term through the latent state equation. The lagged utility term captures habit persistence, which has not been explored directly in earlier models (Heckman, 1981b). The autoregressive nature of the lagged utility provides a significantly richer summary of prior utility than a lagged outcome variable. The fitting algorithm combines a non-linear particle filter with a standard Metropolis-Hastings step to compute Bayesian posterior estimates of the parameters. The model can capture habit persistence (inertia), variety seeking, serial correlation, and unobserved heterogeneity. Through simulation analysis, I demonstrate that while the proposed method is effective in estimating the parameters, both a large sample size and the number of simulated particles are critical. Misspecification in serial correlation in the random component of the utility function is shown to result in biased estimates for certain coefficients, although not the habit persistence term. This method avoids the initial conditions problem common with lagged variables (Wooldridge, 2010). From the perspective of a marketer, the value of the proposed model stems from its ability to distinguish the effects of habit, variety seeking, and heterogeneity. The algorithm is applied to case studies involving the sales of fast-moving consumer goods, as recorded in scanner data furnished by a major grocery store. The studies demonstrate the wide-ranging variation in purchasing habits and price sensitivity across customers; this variation highlights the value of the individual-level models applied in this study. Specifically, we find the existence of habitual purchasing behavior in utilitarian goods (e.g., cereal and soft drinks). However, in hedonic goods (e.g., beer), we find no evidence of habit persistence, which is in agreement with earlier studies.

Procedures for drawing from densities are described, including variance reduction techniques such as anithetics and Halton draws. Recent advances in Bayesian procedures are explored, including the use of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and its variant Gibbs sampling. The second edition adds chapters on endogeneity and expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms. No other book incorporates all these fields, which have arisen in the past 25 years. The procedures are applicable in many fields, including energy, transportation, environmental studies, health, labor, and marketing.

Book excerpt: In this project, we braided together three strands of research to study how interface design and decision strategies interact to affect adaptive choice behavior in a dynamic decision paradigm. In the first strand are computational models of dynamic decision-making built within a well-recognized cognitive architecture, ACT-R. Our second strand is composed of the decades-plus research efforts that show that people adopt decision-making strategies that tradeoff effectiveness for efficiency. Of particular importance is work showing that the way in which information is presented and how decision aids are constructed may unintentionally influence the decision strategies adopted. The third strand is work from our own lab showing the influence of hard and soft constraints on routine interactive behavior. This work suggests that the cognitive system works locally to optimize non-deliberate choices but that the sum of such locally optimized choices may be far from an optimized global outcome. These strands are braided together in Argus Prime: a simulated task environment of a radar operator's task that was designed to study the interaction between the sometimes conflicting top-down and bottom-up demands.
