Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation of radar performance using an actual radar is extremely costly. Such a process usually provides only samples of data under limited and difficult-to-control scenarios. In contrast, computer simulation using a validated model of the radar system provides flexible and cost effective means of testing various aspects of the system. This research represents an initial attempt to construct function-by-function validated models of radar systems for performance assessment and to produce simulation software which can accept environment data and threat scenarios and drive the radar models. Several desirable aspects of radar operations have not been included in this work but should be considered for future implementation. They are: multiple PRF capability and range-Doppler ambiguity resolution; ECCM features such as carrier frequency agility and sidelobe cancellation; and clutter map for enhanced zero velocity target detection. In this thesis, the software model of a generic search radar operating at a medium pulse repetition frequency (PRF) with Doppler filtering capability is created. A simulation program is written which takes this radar model, combines it with user defined trajectories and cross sections of targets and jammers to produce echo signals, and displays the radar output on a plane-position indicator (PPI) and separately on a range-Doppler plane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource covers basic concepts and modeling examples for the three “pillars” of EW: Electronic Attack (EA) systems, Electronic Protection (EP) techniques, and Electronic Support (ES). It develops techniques for the modeling and simulation (M&S) of modern radar and electronic warfare (EW) systems and reviews radar principles, including the radar equation. M&S techniques are introduced, and example models developed in MATLAB and Simulink are presented and discussed in detail. These individual models are combined to create a full end-to-end engineering engagement simulation between a pulse-Doppler radar and a target. The radar-target engagement model is extended to include jamming models and is used to illustrate the interaction between radar and jamming signals and the impact on radar detection and tracking. In addition, several classic EA techniques are introduced and modeled, and the effects on radar performance are explored. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and managers who are involved in the design, development, or testing of radar and EW systems. It provides a comprehensive overview of the M&S techniques that are used in these systems, and the book's many examples and case studies provide a solid foundation for understanding how these techniques can be applied in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a package which simulates the dynamic radar signatures a radar receiver would expect when tracking a moving target such as an aircraft or a missile. The package consists of several MATLAB codes. The basic engagement simulated is a radar, such as seen on a fully active missile seeker, engaging a target such as an aircraft. The static scattering characteristics of the target are required as an input to the package. The package then simulates the radar-target engagement dynamics modeling the target motion and the physical target vibrations which effect the signature the radar receives. The outputs of the package are the scattered electric field, the Doppler shift, and the angular tracking error, or glint, all as seen by the radar. This package is meant to aid a hardware-in-the-loop simulation of a radar-target engagement.

Book excerpt: This Note describes an updated version of RJARS (RAND's version of the Jamming Aircraft and Radar Simulation). The present RJARS is a many-on-many computer simulation in the C language involving aircraft, radars, jamming systems, offensive and defensive missiles, infrared and optical systems, and a command-control-communications system for the defense. It can operate in conjunction with the RAND programs JANUS and CAGIS. RJARS treats sortie operations and evaluates jamming effectiveness and mission attrition at a level of detail that includes reasonable refinements of equipment operation without excessive calculational complexity. This Note describes RJARS and its sequence of operations, shows how to prepare input files and operate RJARS, gives programming details, and provides a glossary of the approximately 1,100 variables used in RJARS.

Book excerpt: Radar Target Detection: Handbook of Theory and Practice covers a set of graphical solutions to the detection problem, designated as Meyer Plots, for radar systems design. A radar system's major purpose is the detection and location of an object by means of a return signal, which could be either a reflection or a beacon. This book is composed of four chapters. Chapter 1 presents the basic radar range equation, which is the basic relationship which permits the calculation of echo signal strength from measurable or known parameters of the radar transmitter, antenna, propagation path, and target. Chapter 2 provides examples for determining statistical signal detection using Meyer Plots, particularly for determining detection probability and integration loss and efficiency. Chapter 3 describes the application of target models to determination of detection probability. Chapter 4 examines how Meyer Plots can be used to solve problems involving most any target model.
