Book excerpt: Adaptive optics (AO) systems make use of active optical elements, namely wavefront correctors, to improve the resolution of imaging systems by compensating for complex optical aberrations. Recently, magnetic fluid deformable mirrors (MFDM) were proposed as a novel type of wavefront correctors that offer cost and performance advantages over existing wavefront correctors. These mirrors are developed by coating the free surface of a magnetic fluid with a thin reflective film of nano-particles. The reflective surface of the mirrors can be deformed using a locally applied magnetic field and thus serves as a wavefront corrector. MFDMs have been found particularly suitable for ophthalmic imaging systems where they can be used to compensate for the complex aberrations in the eye that blur the images of the internal parts of the eye. However, their practical implementation in clinical devices is hampered by the lack of effective methods to control the shape of their deformable surface. The research work reported in this thesis presents solutions to the surface shape control problem in a MFDM that will make it possible for such devices to become integral components of retinal imaging AO systems. The first major contribution of this research is the development of an accurate analytical model of the dynamics of the mirror surface shape. The model is developed by analytically solving the coupled system of fluid-magnetic equations that govern the dynamics of the surface shape. The model is presented in state-space form and can be readily used in the development of surface shape control algorithms. The second major contribution of the research work is a novel, innovative design of the MFDM. The design change was prompted by the findings of the analytical work undertaken to develop the model mentioned above and is aimed at linearizing the response of the mirror surface. The proposed design also allows for mirror surface deflections that are many times higher than those provided by the conventional MFDM designs. A third contribution of this thesis involves the development of control algorithms that allowed the first ever use of a MFDM in a closed-loop adaptive optics system. A decentralized proportional-integral (PI) control algorithm developed based on the DC model of the wavefront corrector is presented to deal mostly with static or slowly time-varying aberrations. To improve the stability robustness of the closed-loop AO system, a decentralized robust proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is developed using the linear-matrix-inequalities (LMI) approach. To compensate for more complex dynamic aberrations, an Hinfinity controller is designed using the mixed-sensitivity Hinfinity design method. The proposed model, design and control algorithms are experimentally tested and validated.

Book excerpt: Studies of fluid flow and heat transfer in a porous medium have been the subject of continuous interest for the past several decades because of the wide range of applications, such as geothermal systems, drying technologies, production of thermal isolators, control of pollutant spread in groundwater, insulation of buildings, solar power collectors, design of nuclear reactors, and compact heat exchangers, etc. There are several models for simulating porous media such as the Darcy model, Non-Darcy model, and non-equilibrium model. In porous media applications, such as the environmental impact of buried nuclear heat-generating waste, chemical reactors, thermal energy transport/storage systems, the cooling of electronic devices, etc., a temperature discrepancy between the solid matrix and the saturating fluid has been observed and recognized.

Book excerpt: Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) is a rapidly emerging field of research in which batch fabrication processes are used to construct miniature devices. MEMS devices are particularly well suited to optical applications. Foundry microfabrication offers a substantial cost advantage for prototype system development. In this research, foundry MEMS processes are used to fabricate low-cost deformable mirror systems (MEM-DMs) for adaptive optics. The challenges and design trades associated with fabrication of continuous and segmented deformable mirrors in foundry processes are examined in detail. Micromirror surface figure is shown to be critically important. Beam steering and optical aberration correction experiments conclusively demonstrate the potential of low-cost MEM-DMs. The prototype MEM-DM systems are approximately 1/ 500th the cost of conventionally manufactured deformable mirrors. An innovative direct digital control scheme further reduces adaptive optic system cost by eliminating the digital to analog converter typically required for each controlled element. In addition to the MEM-DMs, other MEMS devices are shown. The thermally actuated piston micromirrors offer greater deflections for operation at longer optical wavelengths. Other MEMS devices examined include a series of tilting mirrors, pressure gauges, test structures, electrostatic scratch drive actuated rotors, and a new type of electrostatic cantilever motor with lateral motion output.

Book excerpt: The 4th International Workshop on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Me- cine took place in Munster, ̈ Germany, from October 19 to October 24, 2003. The series of International Workshops on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Medicine beganwiththe?rstworkshopinShatura/Russiain1997,thesecond workshop took place in Durham/England in 1999, and the third workshop was held in Albuquerque/USA in 2001. The workshop series started out as a true grassroots movement and kept an informal spirit throughout all four workshops. Many personal friendships and scienti?c collaborations have been formed at these meetings. This fourth workshop was supposed to be held in Beijing, China. H- ever, the program committee decided in May 2003 to move the workshop to Munster ̈ due the general perception that the SARS (Severe Acute R- piratory Syndrome) cases reported in China could lead to a large epidemic. Despite this rather short notice the workshop in Munster ̈ was attended by about 70 people. Incidentally, the workshop coincided with the 50th anniv- sary of adaptive optics, because it was October 1953 when Horace Babcock published his famous paper “The possibilities of compensating astronomical seeing” in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Paci?c.

Book excerpt: This research conducted the first demonstrated use of a micro- electro-mechanical structure (MEMS) mirror array to correct a static optical aberration. A well developed technique in adaptive optics imaging systems uses a deformable mirror to reflect the incident wave front to the imaging stage of the system. By matching the surface of the deformable mirror to the shape of the wave front phase distortion, the reflected wave front will be less aberrated before it is imaged. Typical adaptive optics systems use piezo-electric actuated deformable mirrors. This research used an electrostatically actuated, segmented mirror array, constructed by standard MEMS fabrication techniques, to investigate its performance as a deformable mirror. The relatively cheap cost of MEMS fabrication promises new adaptive optics applications if a suitable design can be found. In the demonstration, the point spread function (PSF) of the corrected and uncorrected aberrated image were compared. A 43 percent improvement in the peak intensity of the PSF was noted in the corrected image.

This requires the development of a model of the plant to be controlled, which, in this case, Consists of the atmosphere through which light is traveling. In optics, Zemike polynornials are used as a basis set for the expansion of wavefront phase distortions. Due to the turbulence induced stochastic nature of the underlying process involved, the spatial-temporal correlation functions of the Zemike polynomial phase expansion coefficients must be evaluated if a proper stochastic model of the plant is to be developed and adaptive optics is to be employed. In this work, these correlation functions are developed using a layered atmospheile model which takes into account wind effects and analphabetism. Calculations are provided for the first flew low-order Zemike modes. Using these correlation functions, an underlying linear, stochastic, dynamical system, which represents the atmosphere and is adequate for control synthesis, is identified. Within an acceptable error bound, the correlation functions of this system are representative of the calculated functions. The deformable mirror is also toodeled, output equations are specified, and the complete system is constructed. This system, in tum, provides the basis for the employment of advanced control and estimation concepts. The control objective is to apply the estimated conjugate phase to the deformable mirror so that, at the target, the outbound wavefront distortion is minimized and the Strehl ratio is maximized.
