Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All life came from sea but all robots were born on land. The vast majority of both industrial and mobile robots operate on land, since the technology to allow them to operate in and under the ocean has only become available in recent years. A number of complex issues due to the unstructured, hazardous undersea environment, makes it difficult to travel in the ocean while today's technologies allow humans to land on the moon and robots to travel to Mars . . Clearly, the obstacles to allowing robots to operate in a saline, aqueous, and pressurized environment are formidable. Mobile robots operating on land work under nearly constant atmospheric pressure; their legs (or wheels or tracks) can operate on a firm footing; their bearings are not subjected to moisture and corrosion; they can use simple visual sensing and be observed by their creators working in simple environments. In contrast, consider the environment where undersea robots must operate. The pressure they are subjected to can be enormous, thus requiring extremely rugged designs. The deep oceans range between 19,000 to 36,000 ft. At a mere 33-foot depth, the pressure will be twice the normal one atmosphere pressure of 29. 4 psi. The chemical environment of the sea is highly corrosive, thus requiring the use of special materials. Lubrication of moving parts in water is also difficult, and may require special sealed, waterproof joints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the 20th Polish Control Conference. A triennial event that was first held in 1958, the conference successfully combines its long tradition with a modern approach to shed light on problems in control engineering, automation, robotics and a wide range of applications in these disciplines. The book presents new theoretical results concerning the steering of dynamical systems, as well as industrial case studies and worked solutions to real-world problems in contemporary engineering. It particularly focuses on the modelling, identification, analysis and design of automation systems; however, it also addresses the evaluation of their performance, efficiency and reliability. Other topics include fault-tolerant control in robotics, automated manufacturing, mechatronics and industrial systems. Moreover, it discusses data processing and transfer issues, covering a variety of methodologies, including model predictive, robust and adaptive techniques, as well as algebraic and geometric methods, and fractional order calculus approaches. The book also examines essential application areas, such as transportation and autonomous intelligent vehicle systems, robotic arms, mobile manipulators, cyber-physical systems, electric drives and both surface and underwater marine vessels. Lastly, it explores biological and medical applications of the control-theory-inspired methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data driven control and learning has been developed quickly both in theory and applications recently The deep involvement of information science in practical processes poses enormous challenges to the existing control science and engineering due to their size, distributed nature and complexity Modeling these processes accurately using first principles or identification is almost impossible although these plants produce huge amount of operation data in every moment The high tech hardware software and the cloud computing enable us to perform complex real time computation, which makes implementation of data driven control and method for these complex practical plants possible It would be very significant if we can learn the systems behaviors, discover the relationship of system variables by making full use of on line or off line process data, to directly design controller, predict and assess system states, make decisions, perform real time optimization and conduct fault diagnosis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern robotic systems are tied to operate autonomously in real-world environments performing a variety of complex tasks. Autonomous robots must rely on fundamental capabilities such as locomotion, trajectory tracking control, multi-sensor fusion, task/path planning, navigation, and real-time perception. Combining this knowledge is essential to design rolling, walking, aquatic, and hovering robots that sense and self-control. This book contains a mathematical modelling framework to support the learning of modern robotics and mechatronics, aimed at advanced undergraduates or first-year PhD students, as well as researchers and practitioners. The volume exposes a solid understanding of mathematical methods as a common modelling framework to properly interpret advanced robotic systems. Including numerical approximations, solution of linear and non-linear systems of equations, curves fitting, differentiation and integration of functions. The book is suitable for courses on robotics, mechatronics, sensing models, vehicles design and control, modelling, simulation, and mechanisms analysis. It is organised with 17 chapters divided in five parts that conceptualise classical mechanics to model a wide variety of applied robotics. It comprehends a hover-craft, an amphibious hexapod, self-reconfiguration and under-actuation of rolling and passive walking robots with Hoekens, Klann, and Jansen limbs for bipedal, quadruped, and octapod robots.
