The methods link particulate statistical dynamics to continuum turbulent reactive flow and solid material dynamic (erosive) surface response. The modeling incorporates calculated thermal, chemical, and mechanical dynamic processes in solid, liquid, gas, and mixed phases. The calculations match the multicomponent, turbulent, chemically-reactive wall boundary layer with the unsteady eroding interface boundary using microscopic transport, accommodation and energy distribution sub-models. Gas-borne particle motions are coupled to the turbulent flow in the inertial core and to the dissipative flow near the wall surface using two basically distinct numerical methods: (1) particulate turbulent gas flow, statistical dynamics and trajectory determination in the inertial core region; (2) solution of the detailed boundary layer heat and mass interface transport with boundary conditions and exchange properties modified for the unsteady influence of particle distributions and probabilistic surface dynamic response. Force, energy and motion coupling between particles and gas is assumed weak, with negligible back-influence from particles to gas flow structure. The present analysis is thereby restricted to relatively low mass loading which may be found in the ullage region between propellant bed and bounding walls, propellant face and projectile base as well as between propellant base and breech. Particle-to-gas relative fluctuational velocities are obtained at incremental time steps by numerical randomization. They are subject to the constraint that their ensemble averaged motions are, in sum, equivalent to the locally, apriori computed mean turbulent intensity. Results also include some preliminary molecular solid lattice statistical dynamics simulations.

Book excerpt: This book presents, for the first time, a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of gun muzzle blast and flash. It describes the gas dynamics involved, modern propulsion systems, flow development, chemical kinetics, and reaction networks of flash suppression additives as well as historical work. In addition, the text presents data to support a revolutionary viewpoint of secondary flash ignition and suppression. The book is written for practitioners and novices in the flash suppression field: engineers, scientists, researchers, ballisticians, propellant designers, and those involved in signature detection or suppression.

Book excerpt: The unsteady, non-similar, chemically reactive, turbulent boundary layer equations are modified for gas plus dispersed solid particle mixtures, for gas phase turbulent combustion reactions and for heterogeneous gas-solid surface erosive reactions. The exterior (ballistic core) edge boundary conditions for the solutions are modified to include dispersed particle influences on core propellant combustion-generated turbulence levels, combustion reactants and products, and reaction-induced, non-isentropic mixture states. The wall surface (in this study it is always steel) is considered either bare or coated with a fixed particle coating which is conceptually non-reactive, insulative, and non-ablative. Two families of solutions are compared. These correspond to: (1) consideration of gas-borne, free-slip, almost spontaneously mobile (motile) solid particle additives which influence the turbulent heat transfer at the uncoated steel surface and, in contrast, (2) consideration of particle-free, gas phase turbulent heat transfer to the insulated surface coated by stationary particles. Significant differences in erosive heat transfer are found in comparing the two families of solutions over a substantial range of interior ballistic flow conditions. The most effective influences on reducing erosive heat transfer appear to favor mobile, gas-borne particle additives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume from The NASA History Series presents an overview of the science of hypersonics, the study of flight at speeds at which the physics of flows is dominated by aerodynamic heating. The survey begins during the years immediately following World War II, with the first steps in hypersonic research: the development of missile nose cones and the X-15; the earliest concepts of hypersonic propulsion; and the origin of the scramjet engine. Next, it addresses the re-entry problem, which came to the forefront during the mid-1950s, showing how work in this area supported the manned space program and contributed to the development of the orbital shuttle. Subsequent chapters explore the fading of scramjet studies and the rise of the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) program of 1985–95, which sought to lay groundwork for single-stage vehicles. The program's ultimate shortcomings — in terms of aerodynamics, propulsion, and materials — are discussed, and the book concludes with a look at hypersonics in the post-NASP era, including the development of the X-33 and X-34 launch vehicles, further uses for scramjets, and advances in fluid mechanics. Clearly, ongoing research in hypersonics has yet to reach its full potential, and readers with an interest in aeronautics and astronautics will find this book a fascinating exploration of the field's history and future.

Book excerpt: Heat resistant layers are meant to withstand high temperatures while also protecting against all types of corrosion and oxidation. Therefore, the micro-structure and behavior of such layers is essential in understanding the functionality of these materials in order to make improvements. Production, Properties, and Applications of High Temperature Coatings is a critical academic publication which examines the methods of creation, characteristics, and behavior of materials used in heat resistant layers. Featuring coverage on a wide range of topics such as, thermal spray methods, sol-gel coatings, and surface nanoengineering, this book is geared toward students, academicians, engineers, and researchers seeking relevant research on the methodology and materials for producing effective heat resistant layers.
