Book excerpt: This paper provides an extensive review of different aspects of five shellfish-poisoning syndromes (paralytic, diarrhoeic, amnesic, neurologic and azapiracid), as well as one fish-poisoning syndrome (ciguatera fish poisoning), and discusses in detail the causative toxins produced by marine organisms, chemical structures and analytical methods of the toxins, habitat and occurrence of the toxin-producing organisms, case studies and existing regulations. Based on this analysis, risk assessments are carried out for each of the toxins, and recommendations are elaborated to improve the management of these risks in order to reduce the harmful effect of these toxins on public health.

Book Synopsis Heterocycles in Natural Product Synthesis by : Krishna C. Majumdar
Download or read book Heterocycles in Natural Product Synthesis written by Krishna C. Majumdar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a gap on the market, this handbook and ready reference is unique in its discussion of the usefulness of various heterocyclic systems in the synthesis of natural products. Clearly structured for easy access to the information, each chapter is devoted to a certain class of heterocycle, providing a tabular presentation of the natural products to be covered containing the particular heterocyclic ring system along with their biological profile, occurrence and most important physical properties, backed by the appropriate references. In addition, the application of the heterocyclic system to the synthesis of natural products ic covered in detail. Of great interest to organic, natural products, medicinal and biochemists, as well as those working in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry.
Book Synopsis Classics in Total Synthesis by : K. C. Nicolaou
Download or read book Classics in Total Synthesis written by K. C. Nicolaou and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996-04-11 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K.C. Nicolaou - Winner of the Nemitsas Prize 2014 in Chemistry This book is a must for every synthetic chemist. With didactic skill and clarity, K. C. Nicolaou and E. Sorensen present the most remarkable and ingenious total syntheses from outstanding synthetic organic chemists. To make the complex strategies more accessible, especially to the novice, each total synthesis is analyzed retrosynthetically. The authors then carefully explain each synthetic step and give hints on alternative methods and potential pitfalls. Numerous references to useful reviews and the original literature make this book an indispensable source of further information. Special emphasis is placed on the skillful use of graphics and schemes: Retrosynthetic analyses, reaction sequences, and stereochemically crucial steps are presented in boxed sections within the text. For easy reference, key intermediates are also shown in the margins. Graduate students and researchers alike will find this book a gold mine of useful information essential for their daily work. Every synthetic organic chemist will want to have a copy on his or her desk.

Book Synopsis Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms by : Babin, Marcel
Download or read book Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.
Book Synopsis Perspectives in Molecular Toxinology by : A. Ménez
Download or read book Perspectives in Molecular Toxinology written by A. Ménez and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-05-17 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the most recent advances in our understanding of toxins from venomous animals and microbes as well as that of their targets, this book expertly addresses the many intriguing and unsolved questions concerning; proteomics studies of the "toxinome", intimate modes of toxin actions, molecular basis of specificity, pleiotropic properties of toxins and structural biology of toxins. Through twenty-seven chapters the authors discuss the role of structural genomics in toxinology, how toxins are subject to accelerated evolution, how toxins can be exploited as models for the design of new drugs, and what the future holds for the treatment of snake bites. In order to address these challenging aspects, the authors have posed crystal-clear questions. Based on the most precise knowledge the attendant reasoning shows how toxinology has become an important area of biochemistry and is directly associated with advances in cellular microbiology, molecular pharmacology, molecular physiology, cell biology, protein engineering and many other disciplines.

Book Synopsis Ruthenium Oxidation Complexes by : William P. Griffith
Download or read book Ruthenium Oxidation Complexes written by William P. Griffith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruthenium Oxidation Complexes explores ruthenium complexes, particularly those in higher oxidation states, which function as useful and selective organic oxidation catalysts. Particular emphasis is placed on those systems which are of industrial significance. The preparation, properties and applications of the ruthenium complexes are described, followed by a presentation of their oxidative properties and summary of the different mechanisms involved in the organic oxidations (e.g. oxidations of alcohols, alkenes, arenes and alkynes, alkanes, amines, ethers, phopshines and miscellaneous substrates). Moreover, future trends and developments in the area are discussed. This monograph is aimed at inorganic, organic, industrial and catalysis chemists, especially those who wish to carry out specific organic oxidations using catalytic methods.
