Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Model Cases, Monika Krause asks about the concrete material research objects behind shared conversations about classes of objects, periods, and regions in the social sciences and humanities. It is well known that biologists focus on particular organisms, such as mice, fruit flies, or particular viruses when they study general questions about life, development, and disease. Krause shows that scholars in the social sciences and humanities also draw on some cases more than others, selecting research objects influenced by a range of ideological but also mundane factors, such as convenience, historicist ideas about development over time, schemas in the general population, and schemas particular to specific scholarly communities. Some research objects are studied repeatedly and shape our understanding of more general ideas in disproportionate ways: The French Revolution has profoundly influenced our concepts of revolution, of citizenship, and of political modernity, just like studies of doctors have set the agenda for research on the professions. Based on an extensive analysis of the role of model cases in different fields, Krause argues that they can be useful for scholarly communities if they are acknowledged and reflected as particular objects; she also highlights the importance of research strategies based on neglected research objects and neglected combinations of research objects and scholarly concerns.

A model-based decision support system using a Bayesian Network was developed to determine whether a patient was complying with the medications prescribed by the physician. Results from this study could potentially improve the decision making process, given the uncertain and incomplete data available to a physician. The model may be generalized to other business situations where a decision has to be made based on incomplete and uncertain data sets. Bayesian Networks have increasingly become tools of choice in solving problems involving uncertainty in the medical domain. These models have been successfully applied to diagnosis applications. The purpose of this research was to devise a Bayesian framework to assess the compliance with medication in glaucoma patients.

If not, what can we learn from the differences? This book attempts to answer these important questions through a series of original cases concerning a variety of companies, from large multinationals to small social enterprises. The cases arise from the Asian Strategy Project, an initiative conceived by ESSEC Business School and supported by Capgemini Consulting. As part of this unique programme, students were embedded in a company in an Asian emerging market and given the opportunity to develop their understanding of an innovative business model by working on real strategic issues that the company faced. Written by ESSEC professors, this book gathers a representative selection of the resulting cases, creating a repository of knowledge for business students, teachers and professionals who wish to learn more about innovative business models in Asia.

Book excerpt: Object-Oriented Analysis and Design for Information Systems clearly explains real object-oriented programming in practice. Expert author Raul Sidnei Wazlawick explains concepts such as object responsibility, visibility and the real need for delegation in detail. The object-oriented code generated by using these concepts in a systematic way is concise, organized and reusable. The patterns and solutions presented in this book are based in research and industrial applications. You will come away with clarity regarding processes and use cases and a clear understand of how to expand a use case. Wazlawick clearly explains clearly how to build meaningful sequence diagrams. Object-Oriented Analysis and Design for Information Systems illustrates how and why building a class model is not just placing classes into a diagram. You will learn the necessary organizational patterns so that your software architecture will be maintainable. - Learn how to build better class models, which are more maintainable and understandable. - Write use cases in a more efficient and standardized way, using more effective and less complex diagrams. - Build true object-oriented code with division of responsibility and delegation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demands of modeling and computation in engineering are rapidly growing as a multidisciplinary area with connections to engineering, mathematics and computer science. Modeling and Computation in Engineering III contains 45 technical papers from the 3rd International Conference on Modeling and Computation in Engineering (CMCE 2014, 28-29 June 2014, including 2014 Hydraulic Engineering and Environment Workshop, HEEW 2014). The conference serves as a major forum for researchers, engineers and manufacturers to share recent advances, discuss problems, and identify challenges associated with modeling technology, simulation technology and tools, computation methods and their engineering applications. The contributions showcase recent developments in the areas of civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, environmental engineering and systems engineering, and other related fields. The contributions in this book mainly focus on advanced theories and technology related to modeling and computation in civil engineering, hydraulic structures, hydropower and management, coastal reclamation and environmental assessment, flood control, irrigation and drainage, water resources and water treatment, environmental management and sustainability, waste management and environmental protection, pollution and control, geology and geography, mechanics in engineering, numerical software and applications. Although these papers represent only modest advances toward modeling and computation problems in engineering, some of the technologies might be key factors in the success of future engineering advances. It is expected that this book will stimulate new ideas, methods and applications in ongoing engineering advances. Modeling and Computation in Engineering III will be invaluable to academics and professionals in civil engineering, hydraulic engineering and environmental engineering.

The contributors consider the challenges faced by the exoneration movement, causes of wrongful convictions, problems associated with investigating, proving, and defining ‘innocence’, and theories of reform. These issues are investigated from a multi-disciplinary perspective and with the aim of improving the American criminal justice system when it is faced with its most harrowing sight: an innocent defendant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a specific and unified approach to Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, termed IFN for Information Fuzzy Network methodology. Data Mining (DM) is the science of modelling and generalizing common patterns from large sets of multi-type data. DM is a part of KDD, which is the overall process for Knowledge Discovery in Databases. The accessibility and abundance of information today makes this a topic of particular importance and need. The book has three main parts complemented by appendices as well as software and project data that are accessible from the book's web site (http://www.eng.tau.ac.iV-maimonlifn-kdg£). Part I (Chapters 1-4) starts with the topic of KDD and DM in general and makes reference to other works in the field, especially those related to the information theoretic approach. The remainder of the book presents our work, starting with the IFN theory and algorithms. Part II (Chapters 5-6) discusses the methodology of application and includes case studies. Then in Part III (Chapters 7-9) a comparative study is presented, concluding with some advanced methods and open problems. The IFN, being a generic methodology, applies to a variety of fields, such as manufacturing, finance, health care, medicine, insurance, and human resources. The appendices expand on the relevant theoretical background and present descriptions of sample projects (including detailed results).
