Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Model Cases, Monika Krause asks about the concrete material research objects behind shared conversations about classes of objects, periods, and regions in the social sciences and humanities. It is well known that biologists focus on particular organisms, such as mice, fruit flies, or particular viruses when they study general questions about life, development, and disease. Krause shows that scholars in the social sciences and humanities also draw on some cases more than others, selecting research objects influenced by a range of ideological but also mundane factors, such as convenience, historicist ideas about development over time, schemas in the general population, and schemas particular to specific scholarly communities. Some research objects are studied repeatedly and shape our understanding of more general ideas in disproportionate ways: The French Revolution has profoundly influenced our concepts of revolution, of citizenship, and of political modernity, just like studies of doctors have set the agenda for research on the professions. Based on an extensive analysis of the role of model cases in different fields, Krause argues that they can be useful for scholarly communities if they are acknowledged and reflected as particular objects; she also highlights the importance of research strategies based on neglected research objects and neglected combinations of research objects and scholarly concerns.

A model-based decision support system using a Bayesian Network was developed to determine whether a patient was complying with the medications prescribed by the physician. Results from this study could potentially improve the decision making process, given the uncertain and incomplete data available to a physician. The model may be generalized to other business situations where a decision has to be made based on incomplete and uncertain data sets. Bayesian Networks have increasingly become tools of choice in solving problems involving uncertainty in the medical domain. These models have been successfully applied to diagnosis applications. The purpose of this research was to devise a Bayesian framework to assess the compliance with medication in glaucoma patients.

This book attempts to answer these important questions through a series of original cases concerning a variety of companies, from large multinationals to small social enterprises. The cases arise from the Asian Strategy Project, an initiative conceived by ESSEC Business School and supported by Capgemini Consulting. As part of this unique programme, students were embedded in a company in an Asian emerging market and given the opportunity to develop their understanding of an innovative business model by working on real strategic issues that the company faced. Written by ESSEC professors, this book gathers a representative selection of the resulting cases, creating a repository of knowledge for business students, teachers and professionals who wish to learn more about innovative business models in Asia. Inaddition, itisevidentfromthe papers included in this volume that the foundations and applications of rough sets is a very active research area worldwide. A total of 16 researchers from 7 countries are represented in this volume, namely, Canada, India, Norway, S- den, Poland, Russia and the United States of America. Evidence of the vigor, breadth and depth of research in the theory and applications of rough sets can be found in the 10 articles in this volume. Prof. Pawlak has contributed a treatise on the philosophical underpinnings of rough sets. In this treatise, observations are made about the Cantor notion of a set, antinomies arising from Cantor sets, the problem of vagueness (es- cially, vague (imprecise) concepts), fuzzy sets, rough sets, fuzzy vs. rough sets as well as logic and rough sets. Among the many vistas and research directions suggested by Prof. Pawlak, one of the most fruitful concerns the model for a rough membership function, which was incarnated in many di?erent forms since its introduction by Pawlakand Skowronin 1994. Recall, here, that Prof.
