The aim is to provide a solution to large-scale scene modeling that is both accurate and efficient. To this end, we have developed a novel Structure from Motion algorithm that increases mapping accuracy by registering camera views directly with the maps. The camera registration uses a dual approach that adapts to the type of environment being mapped. In order to further increase the accuracy of the resulting maps, a new method is presented, allowing detection of images corresponding to the same scene region (crossovers). Crossovers then used in conjunction with global alignment methods in order to highly reduce estimation errors, especially when mapping large areas. Our method is based on Visual Bag of Words paradigm (BoW), offering a more efficient and simpler solution by eliminating the training stage, generally required by state of the art BoW algorithms. Also, towards developing methods for efficient mapping of large areas (especially with costs related to map storage, transmission and rendering in mind), an online 3D model simplification algorithm is proposed. This new algorithm presents the advantage of selecting only those vertices that are geometrically representative for the scene.

They enable applications like 3D video reconstruction, motion capture, smart homes, wide area surveillance, etc. Most of these require or benefit from a calibration of the multi-camera system. This book presents a novel approach for automatically estimating that calibration. In contrast to established methods, it neither requires a calibration object nor any user interaction. From a theoretical point of view, this book also presents and solves the novel graph theoretical problem of finding shortest triangle paths.

Abstract: This thesis is concerned with three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and point registration, which are fundamental topics of numerous applications in the area of computer vision. First, we propose the multiple epipolar lines (MEL) shape recovery method for 3D reconstruction from an image sequence captured under circular motion. This method involves recovering the 3D shape by reconstructing a set of 3D rim curves. The position of each point on a 3D rim curve is estimated by using three or more views. Two or more of these views are chosen close to each other to guarantee good image point matching, while one or more views are chosen far from these views to properly compensate for the error introduced in the triangulation scheme by the short baseline of the close views. Image point matching among all views is performed using a new method that suitably combines epipolar geometry and cross-correlation. Second, we develop the one line search (OLS) method for estimating the 3D model of an object from a sequence of images. The recovered object comprises a set of 3D rim curves. The OLS method determines the image point correspondences of each 3D point through a single line search along the ray defined by the camera center and each two-dimensional (2D) point where a photo-consistency index is maximized. In accordance with the approach, the search area is independently reduced to a line segment on the number of views. The key advantage of the proposed method is that only one variable is focused on in defining the corresponding 3D point, whereas the approaches for multiple-view stereo typically exploit multiple epipolar lines and hence require multiple variables. Third, we propose the expectation conditional maximization for point registration (ECMPR) algorithm to solve the rigid point registration problem by fitting the problem into the framework of maximum likelihood with missing data. The unknown correspondences are handled via mixture models. We derive a maximization criterion based on the expected complete-data log-likelihood. Then, the point registration problem can be solved by an instance of the expectation conditional maximization algorithm, that is, the ECMPR algorithm. Experiments with synthetic and real data are presented in each section. The proposed approaches provide satisfactory and promising results. Book excerpt: In his master thesis, Sven Painer develops, implements, and evaluates a method to reconstruct the liver surface from monocular mini-laparoscopic sequences. The principal focus of his research is to create a basis for helping clinicians to write reports with quantitative descriptions of the liver surface. A Structure from Motion approach is performed to do a sparse reconstruction of the liver surface and subsequently this information is used in a variation based dense 3D reconstruction. The algorithms are formulated in a causal way, enabling the implementation to be run in real-time on an adequate hardware platform. The results show a significant performance increase and pave the way to give clinicians a feedback during video capturing to improve the quality of the reconstruction in the near future.

Book excerpt: A new method for 3D modeling is proposed, which generates a content-based 3D mosaic (CB3M) representation for long video sequences of 3D, dynamic urban scenes captured by a camera on a mobile platform. In the first phase, a set of parallel-perspective (pushbroom) mosaics with varying viewing directions is generated to capture both the 3D and dynamic aspects of the scene under the camera coverage. In the second phase, a unified patch-based stereo matching algorithm is applied to extract parametric representations of the color, structure and motion of the dynamic and/or 3D objects in urban scenes, where a lot of planar surfaces exist. Multiple pairs of stereo mosaics are used for facilitating reliable stereo matching, occlusion handling, accurate 3D reconstruction and robust moving target detection. The outcome of this phase is a CB3M representation, which is a highly compressed visual representation for a dynamic 3D scene, and has object contents of both 3D and motion information. In the third phase, a multi-layer based scene understanding algorithm is proposed, resulting in a planar surface model for higher-level object representations. Experimental results are given for both simulated and several different real video sequences of large-scale 3D scenes to show the accuracy and effectiveness of the representation. We also show the patch-based stereo matching algorithm and the CB3M representation can be generalized to 3D modeling with perspective views using either a single camera or a stereovision head on a ground mobile platform or a pedestrian. Applications of the proposed method include airborne or ground video surveillance, 3D urban scene modeling, traffic survey, transportation planning and the visual aid for perception and navigation of blind people.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "3D Reconstruction and Camera Calibration from Circular-Motion Image Sequences" Submitted by Li Yan for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2005 This thesis investigates the problem of 3D reconstruction from circular motion image sequences. The problem is normally resolved in two steps: projective reconstruction and then metric reconstruction by self-calibration. A key question considered in this thesis is how to make use of the circular motion information to improve the reconstruction accuracy and reduce the reconstruction ambiguity. The information is previously utilized by identifying the fixed image entities (e.g. the image of the rotation axis, vanishing line of the motion plane, etc). These fixed entities, however, only exist in constant intrinsic parameter sequences. In this thesis, circular motion constraints, which are valid for varying intrinsic parameter (e.g. zooming/refocusing) cameras, are formulated from the movement of camera center and principal plane. Based on the constraints, several novel algorithms are developed for each step of the whole 3D reconstruction procedure. For image sequences with known rotation angles, a circular projective reconstruction algorithm is proposed. We first formulate the circular motion constraints in the Euclidean frame, and then deduce the most general form of reconstruction in a projective frame that satisfies the circular motion constraints. The constraints are gradually enforced during an iterative process, resulting in a circular projective reconstruction. This approach can be used to deal with both cases of constant and varying intrinsic parameters. It is proved that the circular projective reconstruction retrieves metric reconstruction up to a two-parameter ambiguity representing a projective distortion along the rotation axis of the circular motion. Based on the circular projective reconstruction, a hierarchical self-calibration algorithm is proposed to estimate the remaining two parameters. Closed-form expressions of the absolute conic and its image are deduced in terms of the two parameters, which are then determined with zero-skew and unit aspect ratio assumptions. Alternatively, starting from a general (rather than circular) projective reconstruction, a stratified self-calibration algorithm is proposed to upgrade the projective reconstruction directly to a metric one. In this case, the plane at infinity is first identified with (i) the circular motion constraint on camera center and (ii) zero-skew and unit aspect ratio assumptions. With the knowledge of the plane at infinity, the camera calibration matrices can be readily obtained. All the above algorithms assume that the rotation angles are known. In the case if the angles are unknown, we provide two novel rotation angle recovery methods. For constant intrinsic parameter sequences, rotation angles can be recovered by using the fixed image entities. For varying intrinsic parameter sequences, it is shown that the movements of the camera center and principal plane form two concentric circles on the motion plane. By identifying the corresponding conic loci in 3D projective frame, the geometry of circular motion on the motion plane can be recovered. Compared with existing methods, the new method is more flexible in that it allows the intrinsic parameters to vary, and is simpler by avoi
