Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a variational technique, a set of coupled model equations for the mode-conversion process near the ion-cyclotron frequency is derived. The system is truncated to first order in Larmor radius but includes the effects of explicit gradients and a poloidal field. From the equations a conservation rule is extracted which ensures conservation of total energy and provides an explicit expression for the wave damping in differential form. The equations are integrated numerically for the standard cases of fast waves incident from either the low- or high-field sides of the mode-conversion layer. The scaling of the damping processes is discussed and implications for current rf-heating experiments on the Princeton Large Torus are drawn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient ion-cyclotron heating in tokamak plasmas is effectively localized in the central region of the plasma, near the ion second-harmonic layer in a single ion species plasma, or near the ion-ion hybrid layer in a plasma containing a minority ion species. The fast Alfven wave (FAW), which carries the incident rf power, from the low magnetic-field side, is generally focused in (by antenna design and propagation) toward this central region on the equatorial plane of the tokamak plasma. There the FAW encounters a "coupling" region and may undergo reflection (R), transmission(T)-to the high magnetic field side, mode conversion (C)-to an ion-Bernstein wave (IBW), and kinetic dissipation (D)-due to Doppler-shifted ion-cyclotron damping. (Here we ignore electron TTMP and/or Landau damping; these can be readily included by expanding on our formalism.) To determine these power transfer coefficients (R, T, C and D) the problem is in general formulated as an integro-partial-differential equation based upon the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations for an inhomogenous plasma. This is however difficult to solve, even numerically, and has been usually approximated by a fourth or sixth-order o.d.e. description which is amenable to numerical integration.

Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic introduction to the observation and application of kinetic Alfven waves (KAWs) in various plasma environments, with a special focus on the solar-terrestrial coupling system. Alfven waves are low-frequency and long-wavelength fluctuations that pervade laboratory, space and cosmic plasmas. KAWs are dispersive Alfven waves with a short wavelength comparable to particle kinematic scales and hence can play important roles in the energization and transport of plasma particles, the formation of fine magneto-plasma structures, and the dissipation of turbulent Alfven waves. Since the 1990s, experimental studies on KAWs in laboratory and space plasmas have significantly advanced our understanding of KAWs, making them an increasingly interesting subject. Without a doubt, the solar–terrestrial coupling system provides us with a unique natural laboratory for the comprehensive study of KAWs. This book presents extensive observations of KAWs in solar and heliospheric plasmas, as well as numerous applications of KAWs in the solar-terrestrial coupling system, including solar atmosphere heating, solarwind turbulence, solar wind-magnetosphere interactions, and magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. In addition, for the sake of consistency, the book includes the basic theories and physical properties of KAWs, as well as their experimental demonstrations in laboratory plasmas. In closing, it discusses possible applications of KAWs to other astrophysical plasmas. Accordingly, the book covers all the major aspects of KAWs in a coherent manner that will appeal to advanced graduate students and researchers whose work involves laboratory, space and astrophysical plasmas.

Book excerpt: The resonance absorption of fast Alfven waves at the proton ctclotron resonance of a predominately deuterium plasma is investigated. An approximate dispersion relation is derived, valid in the vicinity of the resonance, which permits an exact calculation of transmission and reflection coefficients. For reasonable plasma parameters significant linear resonance absorption is found.
