Book Synopsis Heliophysics: Plasma Physics of the Local Cosmos by : Carolus J. Schrijver
Download or read book Heliophysics: Plasma Physics of the Local Cosmos written by Carolus J. Schrijver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heliophysics is a developing scientific discipline integrating studies of the Sun's variability, the surrounding heliosphere, and climatic environments. Over the past few centuries, our understanding of how the Sun drives space weather and climate on the Earth and other planets has advanced at an ever-increasing rate. This volume, the first in this series of three heliophysics texts, integrates such diverse topics for the first time as a coherent intellectual discipline. It emphasises the physical processes coupling the Sun and Earth, allowing insights into the interaction of the solar wind and radiation with the Earth's magnetic field, atmosphere and climate system. It provides a core resource for advanced undergraduates and graduates, and also constitutes a foundational reference for researchers in heliophysics, astrophysics, plasma physics, space physics, solar physics, aeronomy, space weather, planetary science and climate science. Additional online resources, including lecture presentations and other teaching materials, are accessible at www.cambridge.org/9780521110617.

Book Synopsis Low-Frequency Waves in Space Plasmas by : Andreas Keiling
Download or read book Low-Frequency Waves in Space Plasmas written by Andreas Keiling and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-frequency waves in space plasmas have been studied for several decades, and our knowledge gain has been incremental with several paradigm-changing leaps forward. In our solar system, such waves occur in the ionospheres and magnetospheres of planets, and around our Moon. They occur in the solar wind, and more recently, they have been confirmed in the Sun’s atmosphere as well. The goal of wave research is to understand their generation, their propagation, and their interaction with the surrounding plasma. Low-frequency Waves in Space Plasmas presents a concise and authoritative up-to-date look on where wave research stands: What have we learned in the last decade? What are unanswered questions? While in the past waves in different astrophysical plasmas have been largely treated in separate books, the unique feature of this monograph is that it covers waves in many plasma regions, including: Waves in geospace, including ionosphere and magnetosphere Waves in planetary magnetospheres Waves at the Moon Waves in the solar wind Waves in the solar atmosphere Because of the breadth of topics covered, this volume should appeal to a broad community of space scientists and students, and it should also be of interest to astronomers/astrophysicists who are studying space plasmas beyond our Solar System.
Book Synopsis Basic Plasma Processes on the Sun by : E.R. Priest
Download or read book Basic Plasma Processes on the Sun written by E.R. Priest and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-09-30 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the excitement in modern Solar Physics has come from the realisation that the Sun is a plasma and that this plasma is interacting with the magnetic field in a wide variety of subtle ways. As well as being of great interest in their own right the observed plasma phenomena on the Sun are of much wider importance, since they reveal to us details of basic phenomena that are expected to be occurring throughout the universe. It was with this in mind that 173 solar physicists from 17 countries gathered together in Bangalore with an air of anticipation. We were not disappointed as we received the warmest of welcomes from our graceful and charming host,Vinod Krishan. She and her colleagues worked tirelessly to make our stay a most memorable one and to ensure that the meeting ran with calm and efficiency. In addition to being stimulated by an excellent series of talks on the up-to-the minute advances in our subject, it was a pleasure to make new friendships from so many countries and to learn, in particular, of the Solar Physics being done in India which has a great tradition and is of a high standard. Furthermore, we enjoyed hearing about Indian culture and appreciating its beauty, especially on our day's tour into the countryside to visit some Hindu and Jain temples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of Solar Astrophysics describes our current understanding of the sun - from its deepest interior, via the layers of the directly observable atmosphere to the solar wind, right out to its farthest extension into interstellar space. It includes a comprehensive account of the history of solar astrophysics, along with an overview of the key instruments throughout the various periods. In contrast to other books on this topic, the choice of material deals evenhandedly with the entire scope of important topics covered in solar research. The authors make the advances in our understanding of the sun accessible to students and non-specialists by way of careful use of relatively simple physical concepts. The book offers an incisive, reliable, and well-planned look at all that is fascinating and new in studies of the sun.

Book Synopsis Heliophysics: Active Stars, their Astrospheres, and Impacts on Planetary Environments by : Carolus J. Schrijver
Download or read book Heliophysics: Active Stars, their Astrospheres, and Impacts on Planetary Environments written by Carolus J. Schrijver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heliophysics is a fast-developing scientific discipline that integrates studies of the Sun's variability, the surrounding heliosphere, and the environment and climate of planets. This volume, the fourth in the Heliophysics collection, explores what makes the conditions on Earth 'just right' to sustain life, by comparing Earth to other solar system planets, by comparing solar magnetic activity to that of other stars, and by looking at the properties of evolving exoplanet systems. By taking an interdisciplinary approach and using comparative heliophysics, the authors illustrate how we can learn about our local cosmos by looking beyond it, and in doing so, also enable the converse. Supplementary online resources are provided, including lecture presentations, problem sets and exercise labs, making this ideal as a textbook for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses, as well as a foundational reference for researchers in the many subdisciplines of helio- and astrophysics.

Book Synopsis Universal Heliophysical Processes (IAU S257) by : International Astronomical Union. Symposium
Download or read book Universal Heliophysical Processes (IAU S257) written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by . This book was released on 2009-05-11 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 257 contains a collection of articles presented on 'Universal Heliophysical Processes', the unifying theme of the International Heliophysical Year (2007) which marked the 50th anniversary of the birth of space science. The focus of IAU S257 was on the universality of physical processes in the Solar System directly influenced by the Sun through its mass and electromagnetic emissions. The contributions deal with short and long term variability of the Sun: shocks, energetic particles, and magnetic storms directly linked to the mass emission, and climate effects due to the Sun's electromagnetic emissions. The discussion also includes topics such as the connection between solar mass emissions and galactic cosmic rays, as well as solar-stellar connections. This volume, assembling the diverse developments in space science of the past 50 years and the important topics of current interest, provides an invaluable summary for researchers in solar physics, and space and planetary science.
Book Synopsis Solar and Interplanetary Dynamics by : M. Dryer
Download or read book Solar and Interplanetary Dynamics written by M. Dryer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal discussions in 1977 among a number of scientists asso ciated with solar and interplanetary physics revealed a need for a dialogue between the two often-divergent groups. It was clear that the latter group was dependent essentially on the sun for its raison d'etre. On the other hand it was also clear that the former group could benefit in its search for insight vis-a-vis solar activity by looking beyond the shell of the inner corona. Needless to add that the combined solar/interplanetary topic is relevant to astrophysics when one considers stellar winds and binary star flows. It was felt, there fore, that a symposium was essential to bring together, for the first time, leading solar and interplanetary physicists from the interna tional community to discuss and record herein their own research. The fundamental physical processes underlying our own capricious star's activity can be understood only by the coupling of solar and interplan etary topics in an intimate observational and theoretical structure. This book, intended for active research scientists and advanced grad uate students, is an important step in this direction. The background of solar and interplanetary dynamics is provided in Part I (The Life History of Coronal Structures and Fields) and Part II (Coronal and Interplanetary Responses to Long Time Scale Phenomena).
