Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for high school and community college leaders, this book examines a number of issues related to student success, learning continuity, individual differences, and the lack of community college involvement in secondary education; and offers a proposal for increasing high school/community college program cooperation and coordination. After chapter I examines some dilemmas faced by educators in defining excellence, chapter II looks at the effects of technological, educational, and socio-economic tensions on educational excellence. Chapter III highlights such barriers to excellence as unfocused learning, loss of continuity in learning, failure to accommodate individual differences, and unfounded images about learning. Chapter IV offers a model of careers education as a learner-centered bridge between subject-matter disciplines and the competencies required by modern life. In chapter V, the "Opportunity with Excellence" philosophy is proposed as the basis for the community college mission, and a policy statement for the associate degree is presented as developed by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges. After chapter VI underscores the importance of cooperation and coordination between the high school and the community college, offering examples of successful efforts around the nation, chapter VII delineates the assumptions and characteristics of a 2 + 2 Tech-Prep/Associate Degree Program, which blends the liberal and practical arts in a coordinated program that begins during the last 2 years of high school and culminates with an associate degree. Finally, suggestions for cultivating excellence are presented. (LAL)

Book excerpt: Thousands of pregnant women pass through our nation’s jails every year. What happens to them as they gestate their pregnancies in a space of punishment? Using her ethnographic fieldwork and clinical work as an Ob/Gyn in a women’s jail, Carolyn Sufrin explores how, in this time when the public safety net is frayed and incarceration has become a central and racialized strategy for managing the poor, jail has, paradoxically, become a place where women can find care. Focusing on the experiences of pregnant, incarcerated women as well as on the practices of the jail guards and health providers who care for them, Jailcare describes the contradictory ways that care and maternal identity emerge within a punitive space presumed to be devoid of care. Sufrin argues that jail is not simply a disciplinary institution that serves to punish. Rather, when understood in the context of the poverty, addiction, violence, and racial oppression that characterize these women’s lives and their reproduction, jail can become a safety net for women on the margins of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using as a framework the "theory of careers" developed by John L. Holland, the authors of this volume examine the patterns of student stability and change inherent in the college experience, as well as the variations in professional attitudes and behaviors of college faculty. Their goal is to learn more about what colleges and universities might do to facilitate the retention, satisfaction, and learning of their students. For example, why should faculties split over student-oriented teaching strategies, one group favoring the formal, structured classroom, the other a freer, more spontaneous environment? Why do some undergraduates become independent thinkers with strong analytical, mathematical, and scientific competencies while others develop powerful interpersonal and group leadership skills? Holland's theory--at its core a person-environment fit theory--assumes that there are six personality types and six analogous academic environments and that the educational persistence, satisfaction, and achievement of students are a function of the congruence or "fit" between students and their academic environments. The authors also assume that there are circumstances under which the environments of the major field exert more influence on students than do the students' own personality traits. Applying Holland's theory to distinctive clusters of academic disciplines, the authors have found that the answers to such fundamental questions as those asked above emanate from a basic understanding of the influences of academic disciplines and the manner by which they shape the patterns of thought and behavior of both college students and faculty. Academic Disciplines will benefit researchers and graduate students who study college students and faculty, as well as administrators and policymakers responsible for the performance of colleges and universities.

This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the term corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained prominence both in business and in the media, not least because of the rise in power of the transnational corporation in an increasingly globalized world. It is one of the most debated management issues, yet there is a lack of consensus on what the concept means, what it entails, why it should be embraced and how. This Research Companion brings together a team of scholars from around the world to offer their view of the key issues in corporate social responsibility research. Each author is concerned with different aspects of CSR, providing a variety of theoretical lenses and a wide range of perspectives from different countries and experiences. It presentrs scholars and graduate students with a valuable guide to current thinking and a comprehensive reference to this increasingly important field.
