Experimental investigation was conducted on a family of doubly side-notched unidirectional off-axis specimens. By varying the notch depth and the off-axis angle, a total of 28 fracture conditions of differing mixed-mode ratios were produced. Fracture analysis of the test data suggested that the total strain energy release rate is a suitable material condition for mixed-mode matrix cracking in graphite-epoxy composites.

Book excerpt: The reported research presents results on the fracture strength of graphite/epoxy (T300/5208) (0/+ or - 45) and (0/+ or - 45/90) symmetric laminates in the presence of angle cracks. The results indicate that the fracture strength can be predicted irrespective of the crack orientation if one uses the effective normal crack length in the equation developed for normal cracks. The fracture strength prediction is made using a two parameter (unnotched fracture strength and inferred dimensions of the damage zone) model, when the laminate is subjected to uniaxial loading along one of the material symmetry axes. The results indicate that the critical damage zone is not constant for the two laminates although it is independent of the crack orientation. (Author).

Book excerpt: The notched off-axis tensile test and the notched three rail shear test were used to produce states of in-plane loading varying from pure Mode I (crack opening) to Mode II (forward shearing). The two material systems tested were Fiberite T300/1034C graphite/epoxy and Imperial Chemical Industries graphite reinforced polyetheretherketone thermoplastic composite (APC-1 PEEK). Using a scanning electron microscope, a detailed examination of the resulting fracture surfaces was conducted. Results at magnification levels of 100X and 800X are presented. Very distinct changes can be observed in each material as the load ratio changes. In addition, for a fixed mode load ratio, large differences can be seen in the matrix deformation patterns between the two material systems. Of particular interest are ductile spike formations seen in the highly shear loaded PEEK specimens. These observations provide some insight as to the increased toughness seen at higher Mode II ratios, and the increased toughness seen in the thermoplastic system. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to characterize the morphology of interlaminar fractures in unidirectional graphite/epoxy composites. The specific objective was to correlate characteristic fractographic patterns for different pure and mixedmode loadings with the loading parameters and fracture mechanisms. Two graphite/epoxy composite materials were investigated, one with a brittle matrix and the other with a rubber-toughened matrix. The tests were conducted with a specially designed loading system which allows the application of pure Mode I or Mode II loadings or any combination thereof. SEM fractographs, including stereo pairs, were taken of the specimens after failure at various points across the width of the crack and at various distances from the initial crack front. In the case of the brittle matrix composite, the fibers are, in general, covered with a film of matrix. The matrix fracture surface consists of hackles resulting from interfacial tensile or shear failure and tensile failure normal to the maximum tensile stress. The hackle density increases from Mode I, to Mode II, to mixed Mode I and II. In the case of the toughened matrix composite, the fibers are covered with matrix for Mode I and mixed Mode I and II fractures, whereas they are clean under Mode II and mixed Mode II with compression loading. Matrix fracture is granular or consists of hackles with a low degree of orientation and regularity increasing from Mode I to Mode II. Failure mechanisms include interfacial shear and high ductile or plastic elongation of the matrix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed-mode matrix fracture in notched off-axis undirectional composite is investigated. First the problem is treated by an exact formulation based on elastic fracture mechanics. It is then simulated by a finite element model. Correlation with experiment suggests a fracture criterion based on total strain energy release rate as the fracture parameter. Keywords: Composite material, Graphite epoxy, Mixed mode fracture matrix cracking, Singular integral equation, Finite element simulation, Experiment analysis correlation.

Book excerpt: The effect of the stress ratio on the propagation behavior of Mode II interlaminar fatigue cracks was studied with unidirectional graphite/epoxy laminates, Toray T800H/\3631. End-notched flexure (ENF) specimens were used for fatigue tests under the stress ratios of R = 0.2, 0.5, and 0.6; and end-loaded split (ELS) specimens were used for tests under R = -1.0, -0.5, and 0.2. For each stress ratio, the crack propagation rate was given by a power function of the stress intensity range, ?KII, in the region of rates above 10-9 m/cycle. Below this region, there exists the threshold for fatigue crack propagation. The threshold condition is given by a constant value of the stress intensity range, ?KIIth = 1.8 MPa?m. The crack propagation rate is determined by ?KII near the threshold, while by the maximum stress intensity factor, KIImax at high rates. A fracture mechanics equation is proposed for predicting the propagation rate of Mode II fatigue cracks under various stress ratios. The effect of the stress ratio on the micromechanisms of Mode II fatigue crack propagation was discussed on the basis of the microscopic observations of fracture surfaces and near-crack-tip regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing use of polymer composites is leading to increasing demand for fractographic expertise. Fractography is the study of fracture surface morphologies and it gives an insight into damage and failure mechanisms, underpinning the development of physically-based failure criteria. In composites research it provides a crucial link between predictive models and experimental observations. Finally, it is vital for post-mortem analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components, the findings of which can be used to optimise future designs.Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites covers the following topics: methodology and tools for failure analysis; fibre-dominated failures; delamination-dominated failures; fatigue failures; the influence of fibre architecture on failure; types of defect and damage; case studies of failures due to overload and design deficiencies; case studies of failures due to material and manufacturing defects; and case studies of failures due to in-service factors. With its distinguished author, Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites is a standard reference text for researchers working on damage and failure mechanisms in composites, engineers characterising manufacturing and in-service defects in composite structures, and investigators undertaking post-mortem failure analysis of components. The book is aimed at both academic and industrial users, specifically final year and postgraduate engineering and materials students researching composites and industry designers and engineers in aerospace, civil, marine, power and transport applications. Examines the study of fracture surface morphologies in uderstanding composite structural behaviour Discusses composites research and post-modern analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components Provides an overview of damage mechanisms, types of defect and failure criteria

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.
