Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missourians One Hundred Years Ago: In Commemoration of Missouri's First Centennial Observance, January 8, 1918 They conceive that their numbers entitle them to the benefits and the rank of state government. Taking the progressive increase during former years, as a basis of the calculation, they estimate their present numbers at upwards of souls. Tennessee, Ohio, and the Mississippi state were admitted with smaller numbers, and the Treaty of Cession guarantees this great privilege to your petitioners as soon as it can be granted under the principles of the Federal Constitution. They have passed eight years in the first grade of territorial government, five in the second; they have evinced their attachment to the honour and integrity of the Union during the late war, and they, with deference, urge their right to become a member of the great Republic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missouri's Centennial Other States have birthdays, Missouri has birth years. In other commonwealths the centennial of statehood means a celebration of local concern. Missouri approaches the observance of a centennial period of nation-wide interest. One hundred years ago there was before the American people no issue greater, more serious than the Missouri question. The action of President White and his associates of the State Historical Society in calling together this Committee of One Thousand is timely. Missouri's Centennial will begin in another month. That centennial is not limited to a day, a month, or even a year. It is a period. In 1817 the move ment for statehood of Missouri had its formal beginning. That year was known to its generation as the maniacal year. In Old Franklin, St. Charles, Herculaneum, Ste. Genevieve, Cape Girardeau, St. Louis and all of the other centers fast growing in population, men were signing peti tions praying the Congress of the United States that Mis souri Territory may be admitted into the Union on an equal footing with the original States. They were not crazy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Missouri The early inhabitants of Missouri were a peculiar people. First of all were the Indians. When they settled there, no one knows. Next came the French, then the Spaniards, and lastly the Americans. The last named were mostly from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Nearly all the American settlers in Missouri were the descendants of pioneers who had grown accustomed to the trying scenes of forest life. They were a rigidly honest people. No locks were on their doors, and they had no need of any. As they were dependent on each other for protection, what belonged to one was freely loaned to his neighbor. If a pioneer wanted to borrow his neighbor's ax, and did not find the man at home, he took the ax without asking, and returned it when done with it. The early Missourians were rude and uncultured, but unselfish and brave. Stories of them, and of the people who preceded and followed them, are both entertaining and instructive. They serve to explain many curious names, customs, and laws, which to a person unfamiliar with the people must remain a mystery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Government of Missouri The following chapters aim to give in reasonable compass the essential facts in the history and government of the state of Missouri. The author is fully aware that much of interest in the history of the state has been omitted and that many of the details of the state and local government have not been described. He has constantly kept in mind, however, the needs of those for whom this work is written, and also the limited amount of time in the public school curriculum that can be allotted to Missouri history and civics, and it is his hope that the book will fill its place acceptably in the work of the seventh and eighth grades or in the first year of the high school. The real teacher will not be satisfied with the necessarily brief discussions in the text, but will seek all available material with which to vitalize the subject and increase the interest of the pupils. Throughout the work the teacher should appeal as often as possible to the actual knowledge and experience of the class. In the confirmation or illustration of the various topics this appeal will always prove to be very stimulating and the results in most instances will be quite satisfactory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Missouri Missouri has had a h1story of unusual interest. But unfortunately Missourians do not know the history of their own State as they should. This is due largely to the fact that not enough books of a more or less popular nature have been written on this subject. At present the only books available that cover the whole field of Mis souri history are designed for use as texts in the ele mentary schools of the State, such as those by Rader, Williams, and Viles. The more standard works, such as those by Carr and Switzler, are either out of date or out of print. There are a number of special works dealing with different periods or subjects in Missouri history, but they are more or less expensive and hence will never have a very' wide circulation. Under these circumstances a new manual of Missouri history seems to be greatly needed, and it is in response to such a need that this book has been written and offered to the reading public.
