Book Synopsis Mr. Lincoln's Brown Water Navy by : Gary D. Joiner
Download or read book Mr. Lincoln's Brown Water Navy written by Gary D. Joiner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Union inland navy that became the Mississippi Squadron is one of the greatest, yet least studied aspects of the Civil War. Without it, however, the war in the West may not have been won, and the war in the East might have lasted much longer and perhaps ended differently. The men who formed and commanded this large fighting force have, with few exceptions, not been as thoroughly studied as their army counterparts. The vessels they created were highly specialized craft which operated in the narrow confines of the Western rivers in places that could not otherwise receive fire support. Ironclads and gunboats protected army forces and convoyed much needed supplies to far-flung Federal forces. They patrolled thousands of miles of rivers and fought battles that were every bit as harrowing as land engagements yet inside iron monsters that created stifling heat with little ventilation. This book is about the intrepid men who fought under these conditions and the highly improvised boats in which they fought. The tactics their commanders developed were the basis for many later naval operations. Of equal importance were lessons learned about what not to do. The flag officers and admirals of the Mississippi Squadron wrote the rules for modern riverine warfare.
Book Synopsis Exploring Coastal Mississippi by : Scott B. Williams
Download or read book Exploring Coastal Mississippi written by Scott B. Williams and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRAVEL RECREATION Mississippi's barrier islands claim some of the most remote and unspoiled sites along the Gulf of Mexico. The distance of East and West Ship Island, Horn Island, Cat Island, and Petit Bois Island from the mainland has sheltered them from extensive development. The inclusion of all in the roster of protected places in the Gulf Islands National Seashore Act has assured that they will remain close to their natural state long into the future. For those who love the seashore, the Mississippi Gulf Coast is an ideal place for adventure. The wilderness islands, the back bays and coastal rivers, and the Gulf of Mexico itself offer pleasure for boaters and nature lovers. This book will guide them to special places in these relatively shallow waters. Filled with detailed descriptions of many alluring settings, along with directions for navigation to secluded coves and coastal bayous, this book gives tips and pointers for a wide range of boaters, whether their preferred craft is a canoe, a sea kayak, or a luxury yacht. What are the best and safest routes? What are the weather patterns? How does one select the perfect craft? Here from an expert who has explored the coastal waters during a period of fifteen years are the answers, rich in anecdotes, along with information on charter boats, excursion boats, and other options for exploring and fishing. Scott B. Williams has been exploring Mississippi's marine waters and islands for more than fifteen years in sea kayaks and a variety of sailboats and has published numerous articles in Sea Kayaker. Williams builds wooden boats and does custom yacht and residential woodwork, dividing his time between Biloxi and Brandon, Mississippi. Book Synopsis Mississippi Ocean Policy Study by : Richard McLaughlin
Download or read book Mississippi Ocean Policy Study written by Richard McLaughlin and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Because Mississippi's ocean management infrastructure is at an early stage of development in comparison with most coastal states, the Mississippi Ocean Policy Study's primary aim is to encourage the state to adopt an effective ocean management institutional framework, rather than to provide detailed, issue-specific policy recommendations. The study examines specific ocean use issues and identifies unstated or unclear state policies, but solely within the context of developing a working agenda and source of information for future policymakers once an improved management framework has been put into place. Methods are suggested for initiating a comprehensive state ocean management program. Model legislation is provided that includes provisions for the establishment of an advisory body to act as a leading policy voice in this effort"-- National Sea Grant Library publication website.
