Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Cameos As the need of short sketches of the missionaries sent out by the Woman's Board became more and more pressing, the Board, in annual session in June, 1896, decided to secure them and have them bound together in permanent, cheap form for the convenience of the membership. No little difficulty has been experienced in seeking to meet the wishes of the Board. Many of the missionaries, not quite understanding the demand made upon them, failed to send the necessary information. Others had retired from the work, and a few had passed into heavenly rest. Much time was spent in finding the retired missionaries, and in explaining to the others the service asked of them. Possibly mistakes may be found, though every effort was made to avoid them; but the work, notwithstanding its hin drances, became a pleasure from the beginning, and a loving service freely made to the Board. If so, I rejoice in giving a wider fame to men who deserve to be better known. Other names, however, will be missed which seem equally deserv ing of high memorial; but it must be remembered that this is not a history of all Missionary Heroes, but a selection of the most typical amongst them, and of those, moreover, who were sundered far from each other not only by time, but by distinctive peculiarities of work, and position, and character. It will be seen, moreover, that one or two names have been introduced which some might think had better have been omitted, but in my judgment they were necessary to the completion of my plan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West When he could barely walk, I took him to the cathedral one afternoon when I went back for something I had left: after morning service. I left him down in the nave by the door, while I walked up to the chancel. I was busied there for a few moments, and when I turned to go out, he had advanced half-way up the middle aisle, and was standing where the declining sun, streaming through the great painted west window, threw a golden light around his curly head. And a tiny little oh jcet he was in that great, quiet church. It was very still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Missionaries: A Series of Biographies The Author, some few years since, delivered in Edinburgh, Manchester, and Liverpool, a lecture bearing the title of this volume, containing six short biographical notices of eminent missionaries. A wish was then expressed by many who heard the lecture, and has often been repeated since, that those notices should be enlarged and others added; and the present volume is the result of those suggestions. While not ignorant that the labours of primitive missionaries present a tempting subject for narration, the Author has restricted himself to the toils of modern evangelists, both because this gives greater unity to his notices, and because even this field is more than ample enough for one volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inside Views of Mission Life But there is another course - and I am happy to say that, as far as my observation goes, the large majority of young missionaries choose it in preference to the other - to take one's stand on the comfortable conviction that our seniors in the service are entirely ready to grant the fact of our ability and that it only remains for us to prove the possession of ability by diligent mastery of our profession. From the standpoint of the older missionaries, I suppose there are few indeed who do not look forward to the advent of fresh young life from America in high hopes of something better, brighter and more promising in every way than they themselves have been able to contribute to the common stock. And more often than not the young missionary finds himself, from force of circumstances, loaded up with work long before he should be so busy, in justice to his ultimate and highest usefulness. Many of them have necessarily been greatly condensed, but care has been taken to do this without marring the work of the original author. It is hoped that the little book may not only prove useful in preparing missionary programs, but may also help to solve the problem of providing suitable reading for young folks in the home circle on Sunday afternoons. On and on, while the chilling winds from the desolate shores of doubt vex and rock the whole sea of Christian truth, this influence keeps steadily flowing towards the frozen zones of heathenism. Already these Arctic shores of desolation and chill begin to shoot forth such verdure as grows upon the banks of the River of Life. Because of the recent revival of missionary activity in the Reformed Church we are in danger of forgetting that this candle never went out. There were times when it was burning low, but it was burning. Though its shining was in one of the lower windows of the temple, yet its light was none the less steady; and the highway along which it shone was so bright that no man needed to stumble therein if he were searching for the Light of Life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Path of Light Around the World: A Missionary Tour To publish in a book an account of my missionary tour was not my intention originally; hence the lapse of time between the tour and this publication. I kept an extensive day-book for my own benefit, and contributed to different periodicals for the benefit of others; but at the solicitation of warm friends of missions, I have consented to gather my observations into "The Path of Light," hoping that they will accomplish all the good expected from them. While many are going over the same ground, both personally and in literature, one great value of their observations is in the fact that each one states things as he sees them. Different persons see things differently; each comes in contact with facts which others do not see. I simply deal with facts as they appeared to me, and draw my conclusions therefrom. The chief value which I claim for this work is this: it deals with missions in Bengal and Orissa which were established nearly three quarters of a century ago, and whose work has not been presented to the world in this form before. I spent more time in these missions than in any other, and devote about one quarter of this book to an account of what I saw there. The illustrations were nearly all gathered by the way; many of them photographed or sketched by my own hand; so that I can vouch for their accuracy. Thornton Kelly Tyson, our Missionary, was one day visiting in our little frontier home, I suggested to him that his life-story should be written, as it would be a great blessing to the world. With a merry glint of the eye he said that his biography would read like an Indian song he once heard at an association. "The Indian sang," he continued, "in weird monotonous tones, and when the words of the song were interpreted they were like this: 'Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go.' "Now there were seven stanzas, and they were all exactly like this, so it will hardly be necessary for me to repeat them! That is the way with my life. In response to the Great Commission, I just 'Go-go-go-go-go.' There are several stanzas of it, but as they are all like the first it will not be interesting or profitable to repeat them." The vessels came under their square sails and were driven by galley-slaves with great oars. A Greek boy standing, two thousand years ago, on the wonderful mountain of the Acro-Corinth that leaps suddenly from the plain above Corinth to a pinnacle over a thousand feet high, could see the boats come sailing from the east, where they hailed from the Piraeus and Ephesus and the marble islands of the AEgean Sea. Turning round he could watch them also coming from the West up the Gulf of Corinth from the harbours of the Gulf and even from the Adriatic Sea and Brundusium. In between the two gulfs lay the Isthmus of Corinth to which the men on the ships were sailing and rowing. Hard disci pline was mingled with these youthful experiences. Her pride, her love of ease and tasteful things, and her dislike of all that was coarse or vulgar, made many dif ficult places for her feet to tread. But amid the losses and adversities of her lot the Lord met and spoke to her soul and won her to himself, and she became thence forth his loving and obedient child.
