Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mission in Contemporary Scotland is the first book to fully examine the challenges and opportunities of Christian mission in contemporary Scotland. It covers all of the most important topics and questions engaging the church today, such as the reality of decline, the changing nature of domestic mission, the response of the Church to change, and the different models of mission that are being used today. Describing and analysing a wealth of concrete examples from a Scottish context, this study gives practical guidance to church leaders engaged in Fresh Expressions and church planting in a Scottish context. A major contribution of the book is to envisage ways in which the institutional Church can respond imaginatively to its secular and pluralist context. This is the first work of its kind and fills a significant gap in the market.

Book excerpt: Scotland has played a major role in the worldwide movement of Christian mission. Equally, the missionary movement has played a big part in Scotland's story. There have been many studies of particular people, places and periods which feature in this story. The distinctive contribution of this book is its attempt to offer a comprehensive and synchronic assessment of the movement as a whole. It examines the development of Scottish mission theory and practice from the formation of the Society in Scotland for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge in 1709 until the present day. It explores some of the leading features of the movement through original analysis from leading scholars in the field. The essays it contains increase understanding of a dimension of Scotland's story that is often overlooked or forgotten. They also contribute to our understanding of the modern missionary movement and suggest lessons that can be learned by those taking fresh mission initiatives in many different contexts today. The photograph on the front cover shows Rev Dr J.W. Arthur (1881-1952) receiving new communicants into church membership in Kenya during the 1920s. It is reproduced here by kind permission of the Church of Scotland World Mission Council and with sincere thanks to the National Library of Scotland. ...a seminal text that celebrates and critiques three hundred years of Scottish mission history. Professor Roderick R. Hewitt, Academic Leader - Theology and Ethics, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa If reading means nodding and sighing, it is especially true for this sophisticated but enjoyable mission history. Rev. Professor Kyo Seong Ahn, Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary, Seoul, Korea This book... clearly opens up lessons that can be applied to the development of mission thinking and practice in different contexts, specifically the contemporary heartlands of the Christian Church in Africa and Asia. Professor Cephas N. Omenyo, Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana Kenneth R. Ross, parish minister at Netherlorn in Argyll and Hon Fellow at the University of Edinburgh School of Divinity, has had a life-long involvement with the Scottish missionary movement. He has served as Professor of Theology at the University of Malawi and General Secretary of the Church of Scotland Board of World Mission. His recent publications include the Atlas of Global Christianity (2009), Mission Spirituality and Authentic Discipleship (2013) and Malawi and Scotland: Together in the Talking Place since 1859 (2013).

Book Synopsis Contemporary Issues In Mission: What Christians Need To Know by : Thorsten Prill
Download or read book Contemporary Issues In Mission: What Christians Need To Know written by Thorsten Prill and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2015 in the subject Theology - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: There are an increasing number of missionaries and church leaders in Africa and Europe whose views of the gospel and the principle of submission are not very clear. Some views of the gospel are obviously shaped by postmodernism, feminism or liberation theology; and while some church and mission leaders understand submission in authoritarian terms others favour a laissez-faire approach. These different views and attitudes, however, raise some important questions: How can missionaries work together in a team or cooperate with indigenous churches if they do not agree on the nature of the gospel? What motivates missionaries for ministry if it is not the Good News as we can find it in the Bible? How can missionaries serve on the mission field if they hold to or are confronted with an unbiblical view of submission? The first part of this book examines several false versions of the gospel which Christians encounter on the mission field in Africa and elsewhere today. Furthermore, it looks at the difference the biblical gospel makes in our lives and calls us back to the cross of Christ as our only hope. The second part of this book examines the complex issues of submission, authority and accountability in the various relationships that exist whenever a missionary goes out to serve God and His Church. Some of the most vivid contemporary problems are addressed from a biblical perspective. It is my hope that everyone, from sending church, mission organisation, receiving church and missionaries themselves will find this book an important read to clarify the issues and be better prepared to serve in cross-cultural mission.

Book Synopsis A Light to the Nations by : Michael W. Goheen
Download or read book A Light to the Nations written by Michael W. Goheen and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing body of literature about the missional church, but the word missional is often defined in competing ways with little attempt to ground it deeply in Scripture. Michael Goheen, a dynamic speaker and the coauthor of two popular texts on the biblical narrative, unpacks the missional identity of the church by tracing the role God's people are called to play in the biblical story. Goheen shows that the church's identity can be understood only when its role is articulated in the context of the whole biblical story--not just the New Testament, but the Old Testament as well. He also explores practical outworkings and implications, offering field-tested suggestions for contemporary churches.
Download or read book Edinburgh 2010 written by Kenneth R. Ross and published by William Carey Library Publishers. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Edinburgh 2010 study process has created a diverse community of discussion and reflection which spans the globe and extends broadly across the full spectrum of church life. At no time or place have all of its participants ever come together. Yet they have found ways to unite and connect - through a website, through email, Skype and Facebook, and through occasional meetings or consultations to address particular issues. The process is therefore informed by possibly a wider range of experience than has ever before been applied to questions of church and mission. From such an extensive web of international interaction this small book has emerged. It revolves around seven "transversal" themes which "run like threads" across all nine of the Edinburgh 2010 study tracks (examined in the companion volume Edinburgh 2010: New Directions for Church in Mission). Each of the seven transversals represents a way of looking at mission, like a set of binoculars which enables you to see things that you might otherwise miss. Working through the chapters, either alone or in a small group, will yield fresh perspectives on the meaning and practice of Christian mission in the world of the 21st century.

Download or read book Edinburgh 2010 written by Daryl Balia and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centenary of the World Missionary Conference, held in Edinburgh in 1910, is a suggestive moment for many people seeking direction for Christian mission in the twenty-first century. Since 2005 an international group has worked collaboratively to develop an intercontinental and multidenominational project, now known as Edinburgh 2010, and based at New College, University of Edinburgh. Essential to the work of the Edinburgh 1910 Conference, and of abiding value, were the findings of the eight think-tanks or 'commissions'. These inspired the idea of a new round of collaborative reflection on Christian mission - but now focused on nine themes identified as being key to mission in the twenty-first century. The study process is intended to contribute, from a research perspective, to the aim of Edinburgh 2010 - witnessing together to Christ in the twenty-first century - and to the development of a new vision in terms of God's purposes for creation in Christ and a renewed spirituality and mission ethos in the life of churches worldwide. Witnessing to Christ Today contains a summary of what has been achieved through the study process up to the end of 2009 and forms the preparatory volume for the centenary conference to be held in Edinburgh on 2-6 June 2010. There the material will be subjected to rigorous critique from various transversal perspectives and engaged with by church and mission delegates from around the world. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: This study of 150 years' educational pioneering in Eastern Nigeria re-appraises many of the stereotypes about mission schools in Africa. It suggests that Scottish Presbyterian educationalists were usually less at ease with British colonialism than with preparing for a politically independent Nigeria.

This book was released on 2009-03-27 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the History of Christian Missions/R. E. Frykenberg and Brian Stanley, series editors/ The World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 1910 has come down in history as a unique event in the history of the Protestant missionary movement. Brian Stanley s book gives us a full and comprehensive account of the conference, doing so from the perspective of developments in the hundred years since the conference. His study should serve not only as a work of history but also as a work of theological reflection about mission as an ongoing international movement. I welcome this book as an important resource in the church s self-understanding and in its engagement with the world. Lamin Sanneh/Yale University/ Edinburgh 1910 laid the foundations of interdenominational understanding for the ecumenical movement of the twentieth century. . . . With impeccable scholarship, Brian Stanley has written a thorough and revealing analysis of this epoch-making conference. David Bebbington/University of Stirling/ An accomplished study revealing Stanley s deep scholarship and wide knowledge of the modern missionary movement. This book will surely become both a missionary and an ecumenical classic. David M. Thompson/Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge/ This long-awaited book is the definitive history of the World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in 1910. Stanley s thorough scholarship and elegant prose bring the conference to life and make a case for its enduring importance to the history of world Christianity. Scholars of missions, ecumenism, world religions, education, and Christian internationalism will find this superb study essential for their work. Dana L. Robert/Boston University School of Theology
Book Synopsis The Revival of Evangelicalism by : Andrew Michael Jones
Download or read book The Revival of Evangelicalism written by Andrew Michael Jones and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the revival and impact of evangelicalism within the Church of Scotland after the Disruption of 1843 The Revival of Evangelicalism presents a critical analysis of the evangelical movement in the national Church. It emphasises the manner in which the movement both continued along certain pre-Disruption lines and evolved to represent a broader spectrum of Reformed Presbyterian doctrine and piety during the long reign of Queen Victoria. The author interweaves biographical case studies of influential figures who played key roles in the process of revival and recovery, including William Muir, Norman MacLeod and A. H. Charteris. Based on a diverse range of primary sources, the book places the chronological development of 'established evangelicalism' within the broader context of British imperialism, German biblical criticism, European Romanticism and Victorian print culture. Andrew Michael Jones is Visiting Assistant Professor of European and World History at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
