Investigating this common phenomenon from a quasi-scientific perspective, Dr. Perditus Pedale postulates a number of explanations, with many theoretical, historical, and contemporary asides. Though written in jest, the book addresses a conundrum that genuinely puzzles many. Included are interviews with passersby, comments from other authorities, and delightful illustrations—all created by Dr. Pedale, the domestic naturalist.

Book excerpt: The Man Who Wore Mismatched Socks is the story of Aloysius St. James Spottisworth-Gack, a Royal Air Force pilot who comes from a long line of brewers. His family's firm, Gack&Bacon Ltd, dates to the first year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Their in-house pub is central to community life in their London suburb of Parsons Green. Aloysius serves in the Battle of Britain as one of Churchill's "The Few" and defends Great Britain from the threat of Nazi invasion. Severely tested by the experiences of combat and the loss that war brings, he comes to despise the treatment of human beings as interchangeable, temporary and disposable. After the war Aloysius and his father Archibald discover that a corporate brewer, Slore's, is buying up as many independent breweries as it can. Slore's uses financial incentives to coerce owners to sell out, converts independent breweries to their own recipes and procedures, and then after a time terminates most of the original staff and assimilates the operations. As early as 1947, the Gacks are fearful that much of Great Britain's rich brewing tradition will be lost into the mass-market corporate sameness that is Slore's. Aloysius decides to fight back and engages in a long running battle of wits with his corporate rival and its young CEO, Alabaster Prufrock Slore. Along the way Aloysius and his family are caught up in historical events such as the Great Smog of 1952 and the Aldermaston anti-nuclear marches. We also see Aloysius struggle with the externalities of his own creations, as a close friend becomes an alcoholic. Aloysius remains in the RAF Reserves and trains younger pilots in the art of reconnaissance against the Soviet Union. In this role he seeks to strike at what he views as an inhuman system which has crushed the human spirit of millions. Aloysius influences the design of a remarkable low-level spyplane, the Hapax One, and pilots it on a series of daring missions into the Soviet Union. Through all his exploits, Aloysius takes a stand against the treatment of human beings as interchangeable, temporary and disposable.

What begins as a wardrobe malfunction grows into an expression of freedom in footwear, and that can only lead to bigger things -- like the race for sixth-grade student council president. Fara knows she is perfect for the job. But as the election nears, she realizes that everyone, from her friends on her campaign team to her entire town, is paying more attention to her socks than to the issues that she stands for. All Fara wants is to serve the community. Does she have the creativity and the passion that it takes to help people see beyond her feet? Even at the cost of her friendships? Who knew that socks could spark such a revolution -- and so many problems?!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open up a world of knitting possibilities with these fun and stylish sock designs using Japanese stitch techniques. In Knitted Socks East and West, author Judy Sumner compares knitting a sock to writing a haiku: both challenge you to create something beautiful and original within a sparse, strict format. In this, her first book, she recounts how she came to study hundreds of exquisite Japanese stitch patters and then apply her new knowledge to the sock designs showcased here. Whether short or long, fine or bulky, simple or complex, each of the 30 designs in Knitted Socks East and West is named after an intriguing aspect of Japanese culture. For example, the leg of the Origami crew socks appears to fold in and out; the Sumo slipper socks are named after the heavy, organic movement of the cables in their thick yarn; and the Ikebana knee socks highlight a textural floral design. Step-by-step text and easy-to-read charts are included for each design, along with illustrated directions for the Japanese stitchwork introduced in the projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turn Uncomfortable Conversations into Meaningful Dialogue If you believe that talking about race is impolite, or that "colorblindness" is the preferred approach, you must read this book. Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence debunks the most pervasive myths using evidence, easy-to-understand examples, and practical tools. This significant work answers all your questions about discussing race by covering: Characteristics of typical, unproductive conversations on race Tacit and explicit social rules related to talking about racial issues Race-specific difficulties and misconceptions regarding race talk Concrete advice for educators and parents on approaching race in a new way "His insistence on the need to press through resistance to have difficult conversations about race is a helpful corrective for a society that prefers to remain silent about these issues." —Christopher Wells, Vice President for Student Life at DePauw University "In a Canadian context, the work of Dr. Derald Wing Sue in Race Talk: and the Conspiracy of Silence is the type of material needed to engage a populace that is often described as 'Too Polite.' The accessible material lets individuals engage in difficult conversations about race and racism in ways that make the uncomfortable topics less threatening, resulting in a true 'dialogue' rather than a debate." —Darrell Bowden, M Ed. Education and Awareness Coordinator, Ryerson University "He offers those of us who work in the Diversity and Inclusion space practical tools for generating productive dialogues that transcend the limiting constraints of assumptions about race and identity." —Rania Sanford, Ed.D. Associate Chancellor for Strategic Affairs and Diversity, Stanford University "Sue's book is a must-read for any parent, teacher, professor, practioner, trainer, and facilitator who seeks to learn, understand, and advance difficult dialogues about issues of race in classrooms, workplaces, and boardrooms. It is a book of empowerment for activists, allies, or advocates who want to be instruments of change and to help move America from silence and inaction to discussion, engagement, and action on issues of difference and diversity. Integrating real life examples of difficult dialogues that incorporate the range of human emotions, Sue provides a masterful illustration of the complexities of dialogues about race in America. More importantly, he provides a toolkit for those who seek to undertake the courageous journey of understanding and facilitating difficult conversations about race." —Menah Pratt-Clarke, JD, PhD, Associate Provost for Diversity, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
