Book excerpt: Precisely rendered to dazzle the eye with their botanical accuracy, the sumptuous arrays of fruit and flowers by Dutch painter Jan van Huysum (1682-1749) were among the most avidly collected paintings of the eighteenth century. The arrangements were painstakingly executed over many months and commanded exceptionally high prices from admirers throughout Europe. This delightful book explores two of Van Huysum's most important still-life paintings, "Vase of Flowers "and" Fruit Piece," both in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Executed in 1722, they are among the first works to feature the innovations Van Huysum introduced to a beloved Dutch tradition. Like his seventeenth-century predecessors, Van Huysum combined flowers and fruits that flourished at different times of the year into a single bouquet. He worked directly from nature rather than from sketchbooks and animated the arrangements with crawling insects and butterflies. His inimitable technique resulted in an illusionism that continues to captivate us today. The book's sumptuous plates reveal the artist's highly nuanced palette, and his exuberant, asymmetrical arrangements reflect emerging rococo rhythms.

Book excerpt: The aim of this monograph is to outline the symbolism, practical use and contextual meaning of the terms, metaphors and names from the field of natural sciences in the art of Otokar Březina. The present volume of nine studies written between 2003 and 2013 (O. Březina’s Galium, Ear of Grain in the Work of Otokar Březina, Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sativa /DC./ Hegi in the Works of Otokar Březina, Trees in the Poetic Works of Otokar Březina, Flora in the Work of Otokar Březina, Flowers in the Work of Otokar Březina, Otokar Březina’s “Geographical” Geology?, Březina’s Stones and Gemstones, Březina’s Stones and Gemstones II) is devoted to selected problems concerning the images, metaphors and generally the use of terminology from natural sciences in the poems, essays and correspondence of the prominent poet of Czech and European symbolism, Otokar Březina (1868–1929). The surprisingly frequently and skilfully used terminology from the sphere of natural sciences is an irreplaceable component part of the poet’s work and is perceived as its integral part both by the readers’ and specialists’ public. The aim of the book Nature in Otokar Březina’s Work is to mediate Březina’s work to foreign readers and at the same time to propagate the constantly good name of Czech literature beyond the geopolitical, geographical and language sphere of exclusively Czech milieu

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoes of Enlightenment explores the issues of gender and sainthood raised by the recently discovered "liberation story" of the fourteenth-century Tibetan female Buddhist practitioner Sönam Peldren. Born in 1328, Sönam Peldren spent most of her adult life as a nomad in eastern Tibet until her death in 1372. She is believed to have been illiterate, lacking religious education, and unconnected to established religious institutions. For that reason, and because as a woman her claims of religious authority would have been constantly questioned, Sönam Peldren's success in legitimizing her claims of divine identity appear all the more remarkable. Today the site of her death is recognized as sacred by local residents. Suzanne Bessenger draws on the new-found biography of the saint to understand how the written record of the saint's life is shaped both by the hagiographical agendas of its multiple authors and by the dictates of the genres of Tibetan religious literature, including biography and poetry. She considers Sönam Peldren's enduring historical legacy as a fascinating piece of Tibetan history that reveals much about the social and textual machinations of saint production. Finally, she identifies Sönam Peldren as one of the earliest recorded instances of a historical Tibetan woman successfully using the uniquely Tibetan hermeneutic of deity emanation to achieve religious authority.

Book excerpt: Barbara Johnson investigates the significant and illuminating ways in which both literature and criticism ate "critically different" from what they purport to be. Her subtle and provocative studies of Balzac, Mallarme, Baudelaire, Apollinaire, Melville, Poe, Bathes, Lacan, Austin, and Derrida take a refreshing new approach to the fundamental questions of meaning, interpretation, and the relationship between literature and criticism. In each of seven essays, a clear, precise, and detailed reading of the rhetoric of one of more literary or critical works reveals the text's fundamental discrepancies, ambuquities, and contradictions. If rhetoric is seen as language's capacity to differ from literal statement, and if "to differ" can also mean "to disagree," then the reading of the rhetoric of literature and theory here is an attempt to capture the logic of a text's own disagreement with itself.
