He saw in it the rise and climax of values so dear to him that their subsequent drop into catastrophe (in the person of Socrates - Plato) was clearly foreshadowed as though these were events taking place in the theater. And so in this work, unpublished in his own day but written at the same time that his The Birth of Tragedy had so outraged the German professorate as to imperil his own academic career, his most deeply felt task was one of education. He wanted to present the culture of the Greeks as a paradigm to his young German contemporaries who might thus be persuaded to work toward a state of culture of their own; a state where Nietzsche found sorely missing.

Book Synopsis The Birth of Tragedy and The Case of Wagner by : Friedrich Nietzsche
Download or read book The Birth of Tragedy and The Case of Wagner written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1967-04-12 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two representative and important works in one volume by one of the greatest German philosophers. The Birth of Tragedy (1872) was Nietzsche's first book. Its youthful faults were exposed by Nietzsche in the brilliant "Attempt at a Self-Criticism" which he added to the new edition of 1886. But the book, whatever its excesses, remains one of the most relevant statements on tragedy ever penned. It exploded the conception of Greek culture that was prevalent down through the Victorian era, and it sounded themes developed in the twentieth century by classicists, existentialists, psychoanalysts, and others. The Case of Wagner (1888) was one Nietzsche's last books, and his wittiest. In attitude and style it is diametrically opposed to The Birth of Tragedy. Both works transcend their ostensible subjects and deal with art and culture, as well as the problems of the modern age generally. Each book in itself gives us an inadequate idea of its author; together, they furnish a striking image of Nietzsche's thought. The distinguished translations by Walter Kaufmann superbly reflect in English Nietzsche's idiom and the vitality of his style. Professor Kaufmann has also furnished running footnote commentaries, relevant passages from Nietzsche's correspondence, a bibliography, and, for the first time in any edition, an extensive index to each book.

Download or read book Nietzsche's Reclamation of Philosophy written by Kathleen J. Wininger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche is famous for rejecting a great many standard philosophical methods. He does this on the basis of critical assessments of these methods. Nietzsche's historical critiques are justly famous but the question of what his new philosophy is often not explored. The important issue is what Nietzsche believed were some of the possibilities left for philosophy if his criticisms of previous philosophies were correct. This book is called the 'Reclamation of Philosophy' because Nietzsche is engaged in a task of reappropriating certain characteristics of past philosophies into his work. He reclaims philosophical reflection as practiced by French moralists, some Presocratic philosophers, and some German thinkers. As a mature writer he is no longer interested in philosophy simply as a place to display skill in analytic or logical reasoning. He is interested in a philosophy which can address the cultural and personal issues of people constructing themselves in their world. He is particularly interested in using philosophical talents to help to discover the values implicit in practices and assumptions which people hold. These 'values' are not just moral and aesthetic they are also epistemologically relevant. Nietzsche's Reclamation of Philosophy elucidates what Nietzsche has to say about value; particularly what he has to say about moral value, by looking at his views of aesthetic value.

This book was released on 1994-06-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the most influential thinkers of the past hundred and fifty years and On the Genealogy of Morality (1887) is his most important work on morality. A polemical contribution to moral and political theory, it offers a critique of moral values and traces the historical evolution of concepts such as guilt, conscience, responsibility, law, and justice. It is a text affording valuable insight into Nietzsche's assessment of modern times and how he envisaged a possible overcoming of the epoch of nihilism. Nietzsche himself emphasised the cumulative nature of his work and the necessity for correct understanding of the later as a development of the earlier. This volume contains new translations of the Genealogy and of The Greek State and sections from other of Nietzsche's work to which he refers within it (Human All Too Human, Daybreak, The Joyful Science, and Beyond Good and Evil).

CHAPTER V THE RELATIONSHIP OF SCHOPENHAUER'S PHILOSOPHY TO A GERMAN CULTURE--PHILOSOPHY IN THE TRAGIC AGE OF GREECE--ON TRUTH AND LYING IN AN AMORAL SENSE--THOUGHTS OUT OF SEASON. THE Relationship of Schopenhauer's Philosophy to a German Culture is a fragment composed in the autumn and winter of 1872. It is remarkable only as containing the germs of a few thoughts afterwards expanded and dealt with more fully in Schopenhauer as Educator. The Philosophy in the Tragic Age of Greece was sketched out in 1873 and then laid aside. Mrs. Foerster-Nietzsche tells us f that her brother did not care to retouch his earlier works, more especially when, as in the case of the present fragment, his knowledge of the subject had considerably increased when he again took up the MS. in 1879 to prepare it for the press. It did not, however, appear during his lifetime. Of the three essays, the Philosophy in the Tragic Age of Greece is undoubtedly the most important. Although only some thirty thousand words long, it gives an illuminating history of early Greek philosophy. (Nietzsche's original plan is indicated by a title he had in mind: The AntePlatonic Philosophy, with the Interpretation of Select Fragments.) The object of the essay is indicated in the words which conclude his first preface, written in 1874: "My task is to bring that to light which we must always love and honour, and which no later or more extensive knowledge will ever be able to take away from us: the great man." To find other works of equally deep learning, breadth of imagination, and felicity of style, we must turn to Dr. Gilbert Murray. The Truth and Lying was highly prized by Nietzsche himself, and he intended to expand it later into an essay uniform with those forming the Thoughts out...
