Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manitoba is more than one of Canada's three prairie provinces. Encompassing 649,950 square kilometres, its territory ranges from Canadian Shield to grassland, parkland, and subarctic tundra. Its physical geography has been shaped by ice-age glaciers, while its human geography reflects the influences of its various inhabitants, from the First Nations who began arriving over 9,000 years ago, to its most recent immigrants. This fascinating range of geographical elements has given Manitoba a distinct identity and makes it a unique area for study. Geography of Manitoba is the first comprehensive guide to all aspects of the human and physical geography of this unique province. Representing the work of 47 scholars, and illustrated with over 200 maps, diagrams, and photographs, it is divided into four main sections, covering the major areas of the province's geography: Physical Background; People and Settlements; Resources and Industry; and Recreation. As well as studying historical developments, the contributors to Geography of Manitoba analyse recent political and economic events in the province, including the effect of federal and provincial elections and international trade agreements. They also comment on future prospects for the province, considering areas as diverse as resource management and climatic trends.

Book excerpt: Much has been written about the history and the people of northern Manitoba, but until now this body of work has not been readily accessible to the researcher or teacher. This bibliography identifies published sources, such as books and magazine and journal articles, as well as unpublished sources that are available to the public, including academic theses and government pamphlets, reports, and studies. It includes primarily materials dealing with the area north of 53rd parallel of latitude, but it also includes material on the area east of Lake Winnipeg as far south as the 51st parallel, a region that is similar to the North. References are listed under seven topics: bibliographies and research aids; the fur trade; Aboriginal and Métis populations; exploration and travel accounts; church and mission histories; northern geography and resources; and community histories and twentieth century resource exploitation.

Book Synopsis Preliminary Results of the Flin Flon Targeted Geoscience Initiative, Saskatchewan and Manitoba by : Alan G. Galley
Download or read book Preliminary Results of the Flin Flon Targeted Geoscience Initiative, Saskatchewan and Manitoba written by Alan G. Galley and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Flin Flon Paleoproterozoic volcanic belt of north central Manitoba & Saskatchewan contains numerous volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits of great economic importance. In view of concerns about the long-term economic stability of that region, the Flin Flon Targeted Geoscience Initiative was established to gain a better understanding of the volcanic setting & hydrothermal signatures of these VMS deposits and to assist in the development of exploration strategies. This paper briefly reviews the geological setting of the project area and describes regional sub-projects of the Initiative. Topics of these sub-projects include oxygen isotope mapping, trace element signatures, detailed geologic mapping, volcanic rock alteration, and mine stratigraphy & geologic structure.
