Book Synopsis New Lenses on Intellectual Disabilities by : Jennifer Clegg
Download or read book New Lenses on Intellectual Disabilities written by Jennifer Clegg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers together recent international research in intellectual disability (ID), examining the diverse modes of existence that characterise living with intellectual disabilities in the 21st century. Ranging from people with no speech and little mobility who need 24-hour care, to people who marry or hold down jobs, this book moves beyond the typical person with ID imagined by public policy: healthy, with mild ID and a supportive family, and living in a welcoming community. The book is divided into three sections. The first, ‘A richer picture of people and relationships’, expands our understanding of different people and lifestyles associated with ID. The second section, ‘Where current policies fall short’, finds that Supported Living provides just as 'mediocre' a form of care as group homes, and concludes that services for people with challenging behaviour are unrelated to need. The contributors’ research identifies no effective employment support strategies, as well as technological and legal changes that prevent organisations from employing people with ID. With nearly a quarter of this population in poor health, the contributors reflect on whether ‘social model’ approaches should be allowed to trump medical considerations. The third section, ‘New thinking about well-being’, reveals that being old, poor, and living alone increases health risk, and that medication administration is significantly more complex for people with ID. Moving beyond 20th century certainties surrounding intellectual disability, this book will be of interest to those studying contemporary issues facing those living with ID, as well as those studying public health policy more widely. The chapters in this book were originally published in issues of the Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilmington Manor dares to expose one of history's untold love stories. When Andrew, Wilmington's heir, is forced to return home to take over the family business after graduating from Virginia Military Institute, he purchases Edward, a slave. The two begin a journey into the truly forbidden, developing a relationship that could result in arrest and death. In the face of this danger, they must also confront entanglements with Andrew's social climbing mother, vindictive sister, senile father, the Civil War, and Edward's desire for freedom. They cling to threads of hope offered by voodoo spells cast by an enslaved priestess, understanding offered from the Madame of a high-end bordello, and the dim promise of escape on the Underground Railroad. The price of freedom is high and may ultimately result in isolation.

Now alone and pregnant Marion has to decide her fate and the fate of the devil's child inside of her. After giving birth on her own she names the child Ann, and for the next 10 years Marion keeps her prisoner in the home. But the devil's child can only be controlled for so long, and before long Ann manages to kill her mother and gain her freedom.Ann has always known that she was different, special; her father came to her in visions and she began to do his work. Killing became her poison, and she was good at it, but everything was leading up to the day of her mating. It was then and only then she would know how special she really was.About the AuthorI was born in 1962 in London. My first eleven years were unbearable. I suffered appalling child abuse, mental, physical and sexual from both my parents. At the age of eleven I screamed out at school for help, and I thought my prayers had been answered when social services put a care-order on me to the age of seventeen. How naive I was. Life in care wasn't any better. It was during this time that my mental illness problems began to surface. At seventeen I went to live with foster parents, they are both sadly no longer with us, they taught me, showed me, gave me something I had never had, "love."A few years later a man came into my life, he loved me for who I was, and I fell deeply in love with him, and we were a few years later blessed with two healthy happy children. Times have been hard along the way; my bi-polar manic depression has always been around. I have two rules that I always try to follow, 1st never be angry with anyone, 2nd only take one-day at a time.
