Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The canon of postwar American fiction has changed over the past few decades to include far more writers of color. It would appear that we are making progress—recovering marginalized voices and including those who were for far too long ignored. However, is this celebratory narrative borne out in the data? Richard Jean So draws on big data, literary history, and close readings to offer an unprecedented analysis of racial inequality in American publishing that reveals the persistence of an extreme bias toward white authors. In fact, a defining feature of the publishing industry is its vast whiteness, which has denied nonwhite authors, especially black writers, the coveted resources of publishing, reviews, prizes, and sales, with profound effects on the language, form, and content of the postwar novel. Rather than seeing the postwar period as the era of multiculturalism, So argues that we should understand it as the invention of a new form of racial inequality—one that continues to shape the arts and literature today. Interweaving data analysis of large-scale patterns with a consideration of Toni Morrison’s career as an editor at Random House and readings of individual works by Octavia Butler, Henry Dumas, Amy Tan, and others, So develops a form of criticism that brings together qualitative and quantitative approaches to the study of literature. A vital and provocative work for American literary studies, critical race studies, and the digital humanities, Redlining Culture shows the importance of data and computational methods for understanding and challenging racial inequality.

Book excerpt: Danny and the Carinad worlds fight for survival. War is upon them. The underdog Carinad forces face an enemy who knows nothing but war, whose culture is built upon the glory of battle. As the Slavers fall upon the vulnerable Carinad worlds, Danny and her allies struggle to find a way out of the no-win scenario they face… Redline Rebels is the eighth and final book in the Iron Hammer space opera science fiction series by award-winning SF author Cameron Cooper. The Iron Hammer series is a spin off from the acclaimed Imperial Hammer series, and features many of the characters and situations from that series. The Iron Hammer series: 1.0: Galactic Thunder 2.0: Stellar Storm 3.0: Planetary Parlay 4.0: Waxing War 5.0: Ruled Out 6.0: Stranger Stars 7.0: Federal Force 8.0: Redline Rebels Space Opera Science Fiction Novel __ Praise for Redline Rebels: Magnificent, satisfying conclusion to a grand saga. Wow, what a ride. A great ending to a complex and interesting series. Deep complex, wonderful world building and character development. …it was what happened to the cast of characters that made this series so enthralling for me. Everything that has been happening in the series up to this point comes to a gratifying conclusion. I can highly recommend this last book in the Iron Hammer series and especially advocate reading all the books in order. …it was one helluva run. The ending is an extraordinary coming together of the people. An incredible set of stories. There is nothing else out there like this. Such a great end. I really don’t know how we got here, the story is so amazing and realistic. Book 8 in a sprawling epic space opera spanning many long decades, this is the culmination of everything set into motion in those earlier books. _____ Cameron Cooper is the author of the Imperial Hammer series, an Amazon best-selling space opera series, among others. Cameron tends to write space opera short stories and novels, but also roams across the science fiction landscape. Cameron was raised on a steady diet of Asimov, Heinlein, Herbert, McCaffrey, and others. Peter F. Hamilton, John Scalzi, Martha Wells and Cory Doctorow are contemporary heroes. An Australian Canadian, Cam lives near the Canadian Rockies.

Book excerpt: When Russian mafia boss Viktor Makarov attempts to muscle in on the lucrative and highly profitable Formula Super, a global motor racing empire, its founder and owner is forced to act. As death lurks on the high-speed circuits, hitman Jack Wyatt, a former CIA senior agent, is hired to eliminate the Russian threat. Meanwhile on the track, the fight for the world championship intensifies, with the leading drivers vying for the title. Among them is a tenacious American, the first female driver to compete at this level, but rumours swirl, suggesting that she only secured the drive because of her relationship with the team owner. Can she prove she’s a formidable talent on the track? As the season-long rivalry among the drivers reaches its climax, Wyatt cunningly lures Makarov into a fight to the death, but the question remains, who will come out on top?

Book excerpt: "The story of how American banks helped disenfranchise nonwhite urbanities and condemn to blight the very neighborhoods that needed the most investment is infuriating. And yet, by digging into the history of urban finance, Rebecca Marchiel here illuminates how urban activists changed some banks' behavior to support investment in communities that they had once abandoned. These developments, in turn, affected federal urban policy and reshaped banks' understanding of the role that urban communities play in the financial system. The legacy of reinvestment activism is clouded, but Marchiel's detailing of it transforms our understanding of the history and significance of community/bank relations"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 GOVERNOR GENERAL'S LITERARY AWARD FOR NONFICTION “Wondrously and elegantly written in language that astonishes and moves the reader…This is an important book: an emotional and intellectual tour de force.” —Jane Urquhart An experimental memoir about Partition, immigration, and generational storytelling, This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart weaves together the poetry of memory with the science of embodied trauma, using the imagined voices of the past and the vital authority of the present. We begin with a man off balance: one in one thousand, the only child in town whose polio leads to partial paralysis. We meet his future wife, chanting Hai Rams for Gandhiji and choosing education over marriage. On one side of the line that divides this book, we follow them as their homeland splits in two and they are drawn together, moving to Canada and raising their children in mining towns and in crowded city apartments. And when we turn the book over, we find the daughter's tale—we see how the rupture of Partition, the asymmetry of a father's leg, the virus of a mother's rage, makes its way to the next generation. Told through the lenses of biology, physics, history and poetry, this is a memoir that defies form and convention to immerse the reader in the feeling of what remains when we've heard as much of the truth as our families will allow, and we're left to search for ourselves among the pieces they've carried with them.
