Book excerpt: Organic geochemistry provides researchers with an extensive suite of tools for reconstructing past environments. Using these tools, a set of unique locations situated in climatic extremes have been investigated. During the Early Cenozoic the planet was much warmer than today. In addition to this higher background temperature a series of rapid warming events occurred termed hyperthermals. The largest of these, the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum is perhaps the best analog to modern day anthropogenic climate change. It is paramount to understand the global effects of this event to elucidate potential changes in our near future. To further this area of research two very different regions were chosen to seek out potential deposits that record the hyperthermals. First, in the Cambay Basin of Western India an extensive core was taken during exploration for lignite deposits. This site would have been near the equator during the time of deposition, a region that is important yet not well established in the current literature pertaining to the hyperthermals. Biostratigraphy and palynology combined with bulk organic carbon isotope records reveals that the lowermost portion of the core likely contains the hyperthermal events. Compound-specific isotopic investigation across multiple realms reveals potential variability of carbon in the ocean-atmosphere system that was then complemented by examination of the corresponding kerogens through application of pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Expanding upon this study the Canadian High Arctic was assessed in the form of paleosols from Banks Island and shales from Strathcona Fiord. Biomarker distributions revealed a shift in environmental conditions from marine to coastal environments from the Paleocene into the Eocene. Hydrogen isotopic investigation reveals that the nalkanes from paleosols can preserve the same signals as rocks from the same time and that the paleohydrology was far different from present day. Finally, a study was conducted of the recent history of Lagunas Miscanti and Miñiques due to their location at high elevations in the dry Chilean Altiplano. Examination of biomarker distribution as well as associated proxies shows that the lakes have undergone significant changes on centennial time scales along with varying biotic communities, water chemistry and lake level.

In the study of paleontology in Antarctica it could also be added that, if not left out in the rain, most of the evidence remains buried beneath several thousand feet of ice. Elucidating the geologic history of the Antarctic continent will always be plagued with this problem. Nonetheless, numerous clever means have been used to extract as much information as is possible, and as presented in this volume. In this light, one of the most intriguing time intervals in Antarctic history is the Eocene Epoch. During this time, the climatic conditions deteriorated rapidly from the so-called "Greenhouse" conditions that dominated Earth's conditions from mid-Mesozoic time through the early Cenozoic to the "Icehouse" conditions that have dominated the climate since that time. Unfortunately, the record of Eocene rocks on the continent is sparse. On the Antarctic Peninsula, specifically on Seymour Island, a robust record of Eocene rocks and fossils has provided virtually all the information we possess about this time interval. Thus the discovery and description of Eocene erratic boulders in morainal deposits in the McMurdo Sound region provides only the second site on the entire continent where we can study the paleontology of this time interval. In all likelihood, the description of erratics containing fossils from any other place in the world would warrant little study and would attract even less attention. However, when most of the vast area of Antarctica lies beneath ice and when clues to the nature of the crust of that part of the continent can be extracted only from study of erratics, the discovery carries with it some excitement.

Book excerpt: The Antarctic continent plays a fundamental role in the modulation of global and regional circulation, climate, and sea level. In its present glaciated state, Antarctica increases the Southern Hemisphere temperature gradient, enhancing atmospheric circulation and generating strong, cold winds that contribute to the formation of Antarctic bottom water by cooling surface waters and sustaining sea ice production. Wind intensification may also contribute to an increase in Southern Ocean fertility, both by increasing surface circulation and upwelling at frontal zones, and by transporting iron-rich dust from the continent. On geological timescales, polar ice sheets are a major factor controlling regional and global sea level, planetary albedo, continental weathering rates, and ocean and atmospheric chemistry; each of these factors has the potential to trigger large-scale geochemical or physical feedbacks. Because the Antarctic system exerts such a dramatic influence on the planet as a whole, constraining Antarctic sensitivity to past intervals of rapid global change will directly inform our understanding of the potential for future climate aberrations. Existing paleoclimate reconstructions identify the late Pliocene, ~3 million years ago (Ma), as a promising analog in the recent geologic past for our anticipated planetary future. When forecasting global temperatures over the coming century, even the most conservative climate models predict a range of warming that was last encountered during the mid-Pliocene. The AND-1B marine sediment core, collected by the Antarctic Geological Drilling (ANDRILL) Program from beneath the McMurdo Ice Shelf, represents the most complete record to date of Neogene climate evolution proximal to the Antarctic continent. Diatom-rich lithologic units alternate with glacial sediments throughout the late Pliocene in AND-1B. Each diatom-rich unit within this oscillating record has distinctive geochemical and diatom assemblage characteristics and most are interpreted to preserve the interglacial interval of a 40-thousand-year glacial/interglacial cycle. Chaetoceros resting spore relative abundances, the radiation of a new Fragilariopsis flora, and environmental associations of extant diatoms in assemblages from ~3.2 and 3.0 Ma indicate that late Pliocene cooling initiated in the Ross Sea around 3.2 Ma. Additional environmental constraints are provided by the first-ever Pliocene diatom-bound nitrogen isotope ([lowercase Delta]15N) record of phytoplankton community dynamics and seasonal nutrient availability across the late Pliocene climate transition. Diatom-bound [lowercase Delta]15N in the AND-1B core diverges from bulk sedimentary [lowercase Delta]15N at 2.9 Ma. This divergence is accompanied by changes in the diatom assemblage and increased cyclical variations in bulk carbon isotopes ([lowercase Delta]13C) and sedimentary biogenic silica concentration, implying a shift from an interglacial surface ocean that is stratified by sea ice melt and dominated by diatom productivity prior to 2.9 Ma, to a deeply-mixed modern polynya-style interglacial system, dominated by the prymnesiophyte alga Phaeocystis antarctica, after 2.9 Ma. A broader context for Antarctic glaciation is also presented, using benthic foraminiferal [lowercase Delta]18O and [lowercase Delta]13C and bulk %CaCO3 from ODP Site 1263 to develop the highest-resolution record of the early Oligocene climate transition from the Atlantic Ocean to date. The two-step [lowercase Delta]18O transition, a prominent feature at Pacific Site 1218, is more subtle at Site 1263, suggesting a variable influence of deep water-mass circulation patterns in the two ocean basins across the transition. The pattern of ice accumulation inferred by the gradual-to-rapid transition into Oi-1 supports the influence of hysteresis in the pacing of Oligocene ice growth.

Book excerpt: An early-Late Pleistocene stalagmite was recovered from Buckeye Creek Cave (37°58.57'N, 80°23.98'W), southeastern West Virginia, USA. The growth axis of stalagmite BCC-025 was sampled for ð18O, ð13C, and Sr/Ca of the calcite. A crude age model was developed using two Th-230 ages, from the top (~490 kyrBP) and bottom (~630 kyrBP) of the stalagmite. A more elaborate age model for stalagmite growth was developed using established marine isotope stage (MIS 13/14, 14/15, 15/16) boundaries. Overall, the MIS boundaries approximate the locations of major hiatuses along the axis of stalagmite growth. The proxy records developed from BCC-025 reveal less covariation and overall diminished absolute ranges when compared to younger records, potentially, because the glacial/interglacial variability of the early-Late Pleistocene is less than that of the Late Pleistocene. Despite the need for better age constraints, the observations and interpretations provide an initial window into the drivers and extent of climate change before the more pronounced swings of glacial/interglacial variability of the Late Pleistocene.
