Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1919, Vol. 1: Metals The base metals-copper, lead, and zinc -- also declined in output and in value, although the roduction Of much of the lead ore was favored by its relatively bigli silver content. The average prices of these metals also declined, and although they are still considerably higher than before the war, they are believed by many to have reached the minimum for the post -- war period. The poor demand for these metals has continued well into 1920. Iron ore declined 12 per cent and pig iron 21 per cent in output, owing in part to the poor demand for structural materials in the first part of 1919 but largely to the steel and coal strikes in the last part Of the year.
