Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly accessible book, a distinguished philosopher says current focus on the brain conceals the real powers of the mind. Edward Pols revisits one of the basic topics of philosophy: what is the distinction between mind and body and what is the relation between them? He disagrees fundamentally with the many contemporary philosophers who concentrate on the findings of neurophysiology and cognitive science and so look only to the brain for the causes and explanation of mind. Pols concedes the importance of such scientific studies but maintains that they focus on the infrastructure of mind and ignore the momentous difference between the infrastructure and mind itself. Pols calls upon the reader to attend to mind itself as a concrete and experientially available reality. This kind of attention, he argues persuasively, reveals mind to be at once causally dependent on the brain and causally effective on the physical processes of the brain and the world. Pols also examines the hierarchical view of mind and causality first proposed by Plato and Aristotle, the supersession of that view by the received scientific doctrine of causality, and the mistaken denial of the power of the mind to know an independent reality—a denial that resulted from the philosophical doctrines about knowing developed in the era that began with Descartes and ended with Kant.

Book excerpt: This book, the first by one of England's outstanding experimental psychologists, brings together a selection of essays on human consciousness, self-knowledge, aesthetics, religion, parapsychology, philosophy of mind, and the atom bomb. Throughout, Humphrey is concerned with the evolution of mind, and he puts forth the theory that self-awareness developed because it is biologically advantageous. "Fluently and pleasantly written, often enlivened by wit, always easy to follow." --Times Literary Supplement. "Always stimulating and fun to read. ... Humphrey writes with elegance and force, and ... his ideas ... are always stimulating. Even the reader who disagrees with his arguments will derive pleasure." --Nature

Book excerpt: At nineteen years old, and one month into marriage I found myself in the ER. I was so emaciated my heart was at risk of giving out at any moment. How had this happened to me? I knew my loved ones would see this as the last straw, and force me into recovery. This just couldn’t happen! Not while I was still the fattest anorexic in existence! I was humiliated, confused, and terrified as I slowly began to accept the fact that I couldn’t live like this anymore without dying. If I wanted to live to see twenty, I would have to leave behind the eating disorder that had become my identity, and plunge headlong into the horrifying uncertainty of recovery.

Book excerpt: "Virginia Woolf's exuberant 'biography' tells the story of the cross-dressing, sex-changing Orlando who begins life as a young noble in the sixteenth century and moves through numerous historical and geographical worlds to finish as a modern woman writer in the 1920s. The book is in part a happy tribute to the 'life' that her love for Vita Sackville-West had breathed into Virginia Woolf's own day-to-day existence; it is also Woolf's light-hearted and light-handed teasing out of the assumptions that lie behind the normal conventions for writing about a fictional or historical life. In this novel, Virginia Woolf plays loose and fast: Orlando uncovers a literary and sexual revolution overnight." --BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This Naked Mind has ignited a movement across the country, helping thousands of people forever change their relationship with alcohol. Many people question whether drinking has become too big a part of their lives, and worry that it may even be affecting their health. But, they resist change because they fear losing the pleasure and stress-relief associated with alcohol, and assume giving it up will involve deprivation and misery. This Naked Mind offers a new, positive solution. Here, Annie Grace clearly presents the psychological and neurological components of alcohol use based on the latest science, and reveals the cultural, social, and industry factors that support alcohol dependence in all of us. Packed with surprising insight into the reasons we drink, this book will open your eyes to the startling role of alcohol in our culture, and how the stigma of alcoholism and recovery keeps people from getting the help they need. With Annie’s own extraordinary and candid personal story at its heart, this book is a must-read for anyone who drinks. This Naked Mind will give you freedom from alcohol. It removes the psychological dependence so that you will not crave alcohol, allowing you to easily drink less (or stop drinking). With clarity, humor, and a unique blend of science and storytelling, This Naked Mind will open the door to the life you have been waiting for. “You have given me my live back.” —Katy F., Albuquerque, New Mexico “This is an inspiring and groundbreaking must-read. I am forever inspired and changed.” —Kate S., Los Angeles, California “The most selfless and amazing book that I have ever read.” —Bernie M., Dublin, Ireland
