Book excerpt: In Military Brass vs. Civilian Academics at the National War College: A Clash of Cultures, Howard J. Wiarda uses his first-hand experience to examine the conflict between the two cultures, military and civilian, that coexist uneasily at the College. He also explores the issues-tenure, academic freedom, research, teaching-that divide them. While this study focuses on the National War College, what Wiarda has to say about the tensions and 'clash of culture' applies to all Professional Military Education (PME) schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed examination of the professional military education system in the United States, from a critical, insider's perspective. The mission of America's war colleges is to educate senior military officers in both the ways of war and the defence of peace. But are these colleges doing the best job possible in carrying out that important mission? Military education faces many demands, including a lack of preparation by the students, uneven quality of the faculty, and confusion over the curriculum. Many officers attend resident programs at the war colleges programs against the career advice of their leadership, despite the fact that they are virtually guaranteed graduation after less than a year of study, while others do their best to avoid it entirely. As the professional military education system has come under increasing scrutiny and criticism, some have even called for closing the war colleges. That answer, however, does not serve the United States well, especially in a complex, globalized environment, where military leaders need the best specialized education to prepare them for their future challenges. This volume examines the system that created and supports the perpetuation of this system, and why it is imperative that it be fixed. Written by a faculty member at a military college with twenty years' experience of the PME system, this book will of much interest to students of the US Military, US politics and military education in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Howard J. Wiarda, a leading academic expert on foreign policy, comparative politics, and international affairs, is the author of more than eighty books. Wiarda has traveled to many of the world’s most troubled and exciting places. Now, in the more personal accounts of his global travels, he recalls his foreign research adventures, the countries visited, and the people he met and interviewed along the way. Wiarda’s new four-volume set, Exploring the World: Adventures of a Global Traveler, details his travels and foreign adventures since 2006. In these travel books, he tells the stories that lie behind the research, offers his impressions of the countries and regions he has explored, and considers how and why some have been successful and others not. Volume I in this new series tells the story of Wiarda’s 2010 circumnavigation of the globe. Volume II focuses on Europe and the continued importance of European regionalism—despite the bumper stickers advertising “Europe Whole and Free.” Volume III deals with Latin America and questions whether the region is really as democratic as we would like it to be. Volume IV provides Wiarda’s analysis of Asia’s economic miracles while also recounting his recent visits to the Persian Gulf and his assessment of modernization and development in the Islamic world. Insightful and entertaining, Wiarda’s travel narratives offer commentary on important and interesting sites all over the world.

To many observers, international relations and comparative politics have recently lost focus. Both fields continually move away from foreign policy concerns. In this provocative volume, Howard J. Wiarda details where these fields have gone astray, indicates what must be done to correct their downward trajectories, and offers probing analyses of recent hot political topics that re-forge the links between international relations, comparative politics, and foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional distinction between military and political affairs in American life has become less significant as military officers increasingly participate with civilians in the formulation of national policies. In an examination of the impact of this change upon professional military education, the authors present a forthright analysis of military responsibility today, the growth of education for policy roles, the form and content of that education, and its relation to the over-all duties of the armed forces. They have used hundreds of interviews and questionnaires and studied carefully the history and programs of the military academies, ROTC, Command and Staff Schools, Armed Forces Staff College, National War College, three service War Colleges, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and other institutions. Originally published in 1957. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before World War II the Army Industrial College, with its emphasis on the economic aspects of national security was a unique military college with no counterpart in other nations. World War II brought new recognition of the important role of the Industrial College. When the College was reconstituted as a joint-service institution after World War II, graduate level instruction was provided in economic mobilization, but emphasis soon shifted to the management of defense resources. The Industrial College of the Armed Forces was designated by its charter as an institution at the highest educational level in the Defense Establishment. The Alumni Association of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces undertook the preparation of this history to meet a long-recognized need for a comprehensive account of the development of the College. This project is especially timely in view of the 60-year anniversary of the Industrial College on 25 February 1984. The present study emphasizes changes in mission and the evolution of the instructional program. Extensive use was made of the annual reports submitted by the Commandants of the Industrial College to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
